Eze 19:59 - Jul 8 with 4079 viewsPetros

I know he has done some lovely things this season but he has been awful the last three games. Hiding.

But in that case you are asking Eze to do the job that Faurlin and Derry used to do when we also need him to do the job Taarabt used to. (Doesn't matter which of those two was the better player, it's the role I'm talking about)

It seems to me that with Pugh gone and Amos + Kane sub-par compared to pre-lockdown, and just Hugill as a recognised striker, Eze is operating without the links he needs both behind him and up front. It wouldn't be surprising if he was a bit demotivated but even if he's playing a blinder I think it is going to be really hard for him to have an impact in these circs. He (or Warburton) may also be struggling to adjust his own role, to decide whether he needs to be the midfield playmaker or as No 10 on the edge of the box.

I agree that I wouldn't play him that deep. I'd have him collecting off of Ball or Cameron or whoever our defensive midfielders are. At the moment their out ball is almost always to the wings who then have to find Eze. I'd like him to drop 20 yards more and be available as the first out ball on occasions. It would give us a variety of options. When I think back to pre-lockdown it seems to me at least that that is where he found the most space and possession, and that he got us moving forward from there - either collect, pass, move and get it back again further up the pitch or - if the space is on for the dribble - then dribble instead of laying off.

I agree with your second paragraph - very good points.

Bottom line is unfortunately we have no solid spine to the team, and without that you're always going to struggle. Currently it looks like:

Lumley (do we back him as our no.1 next season?)
Barbet (jury still out)
Ball (OK, but can we do better?)
Hugill (not ours, can we get him back for next season?)

Hope we can strengthen the squad pre-season, but in recruitment terms that is a very tough job.

Ball has been decent overall this season

Barbet, I still think he needs a strong leader beside him.

Lumley had done well since coming back but made so many cock ups this season. Is Dieng better? Time will tell.

Kane, really inconsistent.

Oteh, not good enough.

We need 6 or 7 players

Eze is also one of the most fouled players in the Championship and doesn't always get the protection he should. So if he was on the brink of a big money move, I could understand him being more cautious, as we have nothing to play for.

Eze is a quality player that is still young and developing. Unfortunately for him he is playing in a bang average side and is clearly being targeted as the player to nail to nullify our attacking threat.

Taraabt was 6/7 years older when here and wasted his god given talent by being a petulant prick. Eze will have a far better career And I for one look forward to seeing him develop into a class act wherever he goes.

Can we not just enjoy watching our most entertaining player since Taarabt without constantly criticising.

We are very fortunate to have him and he's a great lad with a great attitude who deserves our backing, not sniping.

Don't think the op was 'sniping' - just saying, that like others, he hasn't played well since the restart.

I agree we shouldn't be 'targeting' any player, but likewise no player should be exempt from criticism either.

Personally, have always thought that talk of £20M plus for him to be fanciful, but we'll just have to see I guess.

It's hard for these lads with these games coming around so thick and fast and the conditions and restrictions that surround them. They have just been driven up to Middlesbrough and back in the same day and then up to Wigan. I don't think their travel is in the usual style either. I think I have heard Warburton describe it as several people movers and after the win at 'boro, I'm sure he said I'm driving today.

I think they are fatigued, confidence has suffered and several of them have struggled with their form. I don't think they are enjoying it and like all of us just want things to get back to normal.

Having said all that, my current hero Eze, what were you wearing on your feet yesterday?
Did you borrow your boots from Charlie Corolie? Your touch was awful!

We were poor overall last night, and tbh Eze isn't good enough yet to counteract the whole team being crap.

Interesting looking at the pass numbers Eze and Chair had the highest ball retention rate, with 91 and 87% pass accuracy respectively. No one else got above 84. Ball in CM had 73. Cameron excepted, none of our defenders had above 80 (Manning best with 79) and Kane with 63%.

That validates my initial opinion of the game - Wigan pressed us very effectively and we were too sloppy to play around it

Agreed. Also not enough bodies in midfield to give the man in possession options to pass to.

I don't buy it's Eze switching off ahead of a move, you could see he was angry and frustrated with himself last night, he just didn't have a good game and is struggling to get his best form back

These pass figures, ball retention can be misleading. Part of the problem is that negative passing and or safe passing looks good in the numbers but achieves nothing.

Manning very exciting player with good passing and crossing when he attacks but watch him when he gets the ball wide on the left from a player behind him. He invariably goes backwards. (Same with his freekicks and throws) He seems incapable of getting the ball and changing direction to knock it around a marker.

Cameron plays lots of extremely safe, just give it to someone else, let them take the risks, passes. When he occasionally tries to give a pass with any length, it is often intercepted or straight to an opponent. (Same when he brings the ball out of defense if he is pressed by opponents he can ride a challenge or two but will run into trouble if he hasn't got rid).

Manning needs to be a bit more positive, especially if playing as a wing back and Cameron needs to go back into midfield and get Masterson (and Gubbins) some minutes in the remaining games.

Whilst we're at it I'd give Kakay a rest as well, has done really well but has played three in 8 days and was looking pretty shattered in the latter stages last night. Give Rangel sixty minutes on Saturday.

Sadly Dave, for some it's the default position for some fans to project their own suspicions on a player and present them as fact. They can't just have a bad game, it has to be because they're moving and they don't care anymore. How they can possibly know that is beyond me. Every single thing I've seen abiut Eze has shown me he is a real professional. He didn't have a big affect on the game last night but the OP saying he was 'awful' is just absolute horsesh!te. He didn't cost us the game, he wasn't lazy, he did try. It was a 5 or 6 out of 10. Why we have to continually go overboard on slagging players off is beyond me.

Bare bones.

Sorry Antii that was supposed to be a upvote but I have fat fingers.

I remember the same thing happening to Austin ahead of his move.

Yes, there can't be a passing game if there's nobody to pass to. In the absence of reasonable available options players are forced into optimistic longer passes.

Agree with Antti's comments Baz but from memory, wasn't Austin said to be 'injured' for weeks before his move?

Suspicions about whether he was being kept out of the team to avoid injury at either the club's or his wishes. Don't think it stopped him for his new club though!

I actually think the role below is ideally more suited to Chair than Eze.

One of Chery's best games I can recall was Forest away where he dropped back and played that Quarter Back role.

Chair is similar in stature and skill to Chery, can pass at distance, is a hard worker and willing runner, quick over short distances and can press and tackle well.

So if we could hold Eze for another season, I would play him middle of the 3, with Chair behind with a Ball type holding player.

All depends on who we keep but just can't pick Chair's most effective positive yet but dropping back may allow him more space to lift his head up and bring the ball forward Luongo like - which we have missed this season.

Not from what I recall.

He scored a couple of goals near the end didn’t he?

Edit: I stand corrected he scored two goals then didn’t play for us for a month. I distinctly remember fans booing him at that final match though.

There are always some who turn on players if they better themselves or achieve something.

Some were having a go at Eze, 'that England call up has gone to your head' was screamed near me on more than one occasion.

That's not true re Taarabt's age. Eze just turned 22 and Taarabt is 31 now, so Taarabt was pretty much the same age during the 2010/11 season as Eze is now.

Taarabt's talent is quite instinctive, I think. You never really knew what he was going to do next, he has brilliant vision and the ability to act on it. Eze is more predictable, but has a better head on his shoulders and will surely have a more productive career, as you say.
