He looked like he'd played football before which is a bonus compared to some of our debutants in the past. He got in a defensive tackle at one point and tried to get into some decent positions. I've got some optimism about him as he looks like he wants to work hard. And he's taller than 5 foot five which is a bonus in our team! |  | | |

As an actual English teacher (and it looks like we will be doing a lot more on-line going forward) I agree. It's interesting though that you say that. I believe it is a fairly recent phenomena (recent for me at any rate) for the English media at least, to take the trouble of pronouncing a player's name right, I assume its linked to the significant increase of foreign players over the past 20 years.
Back in the day, Manchester United had an Irishman by the name of Kevin Moran at the heart of their defence. Now over here the emphasis is on the first syllable the 'Mo'. Kevin was already an established household name here before he went to England, as he had won and All Ireland Final with Dublin. So we were very surprised to hear him being referred to as Kevin moRAN when he played for United and Ireland and the pundits refused to change despite being asked to do so on many occasions .
Thirty years later, Kevin De Bruyne had no such difficulties persuading all to place the emphasis on the 'ne' of his surname | | | |
