‘Talks ongoing’ over deal for Lumley 17:56 - May 9 with 2483 viewsdmm

The club is trying to persuade Lumley to sign a new contract. I'd assumed he'd leave for free but if he can be talked into staying it would be fantastic to have both him and Dieng.

Go on Joe. You know you want to!

This is not an easy decision for Young Joseph, so I'm not surprised he's not committed himself so far.

On the one hand, he's been at the club 10 years, and has got mates such as Ossie Kakay and Niko Hamalainen who's he come through the ranks with.

On the other hand, he's lost the No.1 spot that he was told at the start of the season was his, seen his replacement grab hold of that with both hands and had to spend a full year kicking his heels waiting for his opportunity. When he gets it, he plays out of his skin, and then sees himself not only dropped again, but bombed out of the end of season squad altogether!

i think he's at that age and has such a high number of clean sheets at all the loans he's gone on, that he should be looking to be somewhere where he's the clear no.1 choice. The only issue is that that might mean him dropping back to League One, and I suspect he'll feel that he's already proven he can play at a higher level than that.

Stick around with Rangers, and he might be a Premier League player tis time next year, but might have to be prepared to spend ANOTHER year kicking his heels.

Hmm...

Think he’s a decent championship keeper.. but he may have to move on. He’s obviously very loyal but if we are looking at pushing up the league next season I can’t see him outing Dieng. Also we have Walsh who’s highly rated.

Would like him to stay but think for his career he needs to move. He’s not a premier league keeper

From his viewpoint he should be looking to move on.....mates don't come into it.

From a Rangers viewpoint it is not as clear. Do we offer JL a new contract knowing that he is No2 or do we move the young lad we signed from the Gills up to No2 if he is ready.

I hope he stays, and I wouldn't have said that last year.
His attitude, and performances, have been exemplary, and he's really won me over.

I'd like him to stay but let's be honest hes a long way behind Dieng for Number 1 so will be bench sitting for the foreseeable if he stays.

But he will be No2.......surely at his age must be No1 to stay.

yeah, well, lets hope Seny stays.
I was out last night - at a gig! - and I got approached by the IOM goalkeeping coach, nice bloke,Derby fan, and very knowledgeable. He's been following Dieng since he saw him last year, and reckons he's the bees knees. If he's watching him.......................

I’d like Lumley to have a successful career, but I’m unsure about the idea of investing a salary at the level he’s willing to accept in him to be a back up keeper.

They clearly like the young lad, Walsh, a lot. We also have the Polish youngster who isn’t that young anymore and Barnes. It feels a bit of a luxury to have Lumley too as backup for Dieng. Could the salary be better invested elsewhere (wing back?)?

Then there is Joe’s own career to consider. Surely he needs to be playing first team football at this stage in his career?

If he has no offers and he’s willing to signs cheap contract for a year, go out on loan, etc, fine. But I just can’t see there being a scenario where this works for him and us from a salary and game time perspective.

He will go on a free to Sheff Wed or somewhere like there.
We cannot hold him.

I would have thought offering Joe a contract would be a sound future transfer fee investment for the club and importantly an insurance policy if the club received an acceptable offer for Senny.

After I watched the Warburton interview discussed elsewhere, a video auto-loaded of QPR first team training prior to the Luton game. Everyone seemed to be having a great time - as per Warbuton's ethos - not least Joe Lumley, playing some kind of foot volleyball game with Seny as his doubles partner. Is it not possible that he loves it so much training every day at Harlington - on an alleged £7,100 per week - that he doesn't mind too much being no. 2 for the actual matches?

Would love to see this happen if affordable. He’s been such a positive presence on the bench, and has stepped up superbly when called upon. Walsh will need time out on loan, and hopefully we can sell Kelly, who I think offers less all round than Joe.

If not - presumably any expectations of first-team minutes might be an issue - then it’s not the end of the world but would be lovely if both sides can make it work.

I've always liked him. He seemed to struggle with the playing out from the back system and I think that kick in the Boat Race that he sustained at Villa seemed to unsettle him, unsurprisingly.
That said, I think his future probably lies elsewhere.

Absolutely this imo. It's not inconceivable that if Dieng has another good season as the "no.1" and we accept a decent offer for him, then we will need an experienced keeper to step in. So a new contract from the club may be with next year in mind to cover for that eventuality.

If Lumley does sign an extension to his contract, I think it would see the departure of Dillon Barnes who's at the end of his contract and Marcin Brzozowski who's also at the end of his and has seemingly been overtaken by the younger Murphy Cooper. It would also allow Joe Walsh, who's still only 19, to go out on loan.

Give him a new contract, I think Joe has been an excellent servant to the club and his confidence returned in games he stepped in at Middlesborough and Swansea. Thought he should have been selected for the Norwich game, as Seny had that mask on and was clearly not comfortable/fit for this game.

Can anyone honestly predict that the club won't be approached for Dieng this summer, possibly supported by a very tempting offer? It's only a matter of time before someone buys him.

Alternatively, will the owners try and keep this squad together for a promotion challenge next season?

If Lumley is considered good enough to play #1 after Dieng leaves, then we should try and keep him.

That’s quite a precise number and I can think of outfield players where that 7k a week might come in handy in keeping them.
