Not Lucky At All 22:08 - Dec 30 with 6966 viewsBrianMcCarthy

Definitely below par, but not lucky.

We dominated possession.
We sorted out their main threat.
We had more shots.
We had more shots on target.

Below par? Yes.
Lucky? No.

And we did all that while missing key players, recovering from COVID in the camp and only having five subs.

We're a serious team now. We'll win playing under par. It's not luck, though.

I’ll tell ya who was “lucky”…..
Bristol City at our place earlier in the season.

As someone else points out here. Luck comes in good & bad places. It invariably evens itself out, unless a certain K Stroud is in charge.

And I never get the “only 5 subs” thing. Surely we have a couple of Youth/U21/18’s who could travel with the squad. You don’t Have to use them, but what an invaluable experience for them.
Funny how ‘Bare bones seems to happen so much in December, with a transfer window looming. 🤫😂

Think we covered the subs issue previously - because of covid we think the U18s & U23s are being kept away from the 1st team squad.

Major credit has to go thre ref last night who I thought was very strong in the face of a lot of bullying and barracking by the Bristol City players and fans. Not afraid to call it as he genuinely saw it and did his best to be solid and consistent throughout.

Yep - see my summary on "Tomorrow's Referee" thread if anyone is bothered.

Chair is the player who makes this team tick with his link up play in attack. He’s generally the one creating opportunities and Willock definitely misses him as they have a real connection on the pitch.

Unless we can find a quick fix (E.g. Eze on loan but seems unlikely), we’re going to need to grind out some results while Chair’s away and last night was a good start.

Maybe a change of system with two upfront might be the way forward but it doesn’t address the lack of creativity in the team as a result of Chair not playing.

Look, every team needs to be able to cope without key players. This board has gone from 'Chair is underperforming and overrated' three months ago, to 'we'll never score without him in the side.' Along with Barbet, he's arguably our most important player, but you won't go through a season getting 46 games out of all your best players! The reason for his upcoming absence is irrelevant, we must - and can - deal with it. Dozzell, Amos, Jojo, Admoah and yes, Thomas, need to step up and I think they will. We can do it. He does so much great work, but good teams find a way of adapting.

Eze isnt coming back on a bloody loan - it's not even worth discussing.

Bare bones.

We all want to win every game by playing great free flowing football, every player doing their job, high press etc etc but the reality is that just does not happen in modern football. You are going to have games where you play well as a team and not get the result you perhaps deserve - a bad decision, injury to key player, bad bounce or an individual error. Hopefully, during the season you also get a result when you, as a team, have under performed. In this division, given the players we have at our disposal we have to accept the good days along with the not so good.

The COVID disruption is the same for all teams and will continue to be a pain in the backside for managers but given we were not at our best, were a goal down, did not look like scoring, missing players I would have been very happy with a point to get all three is fantastic. Just enjoy the win and the ride boys!!!

Happy New Year to everyone and lets hope for a 'LUCKY' 2022!!!!

This is very fair.

We have to accept, and Warbs has said this himself, to really dominate teams we need to have all of our best players firing at once. We've had injuries to all four of our best fullbacks and two of them are lacking match sharpness, quite clearly, but really coming back and trying to do a job. Without both of them quite firing it puts massive pressure on Willock to be our creative outlet, especially when Chair isn't playing either.

Johansen has looked good in fits and starts this season after the heights of last season but the Twitterati aren't seeing that he's had a big load on his back at times playing a very defensive role, sometimes on his own. Dozzell has really improved as a support and I think we missed him last night.

Amos is starting to show how valuable he can be but he is still coming back to full effectiveness after a year out. Field, too, is looking capable rather than really dominating games, again in comparison to last season when he was both fully fit and fully match fit. Dykes is also coming back from a long break but looked sharper already last night. CA still has the guile and experience but he can't contribute with an all-round performance because of his lack of pace, so that puts pressure on other members of the team.

Having said all that we're still fourth in the form table for the last six matches. Bournemouth and Fulham are 11th and 13th, and that's with their squads with much better strength in depth than we have. I think we're continuing to punch above our weight. And I don't think anyone can argue we didn't deserve a bit of luck after some of the things that have happened this season. And I don't think anyone can argue this squad absolutely works their socks off and deserves a bit of luck for that reason too.

Obviously we’re going to have to make do without Chair but it’s easier said than done and we might need to change the system. I don’t think it’s as simple as replacing him with Thomas or Dozzell as they are different players and not on Chair’s level.

Anyway, the main reason I (and others) pointed out that we miss Chair was in response to criticism towards Austin who had very little to feed off last night. Hopefully MW will be able to address this problem over the coming weeks.

I don't get all this Charlie bashing. Thought he played OK last night.

He seems to be getting it in the neck most games lately. Never thought I'd see that happening. Some people on this board have short memories, last January he was the Messiah.

As for the game, I agree with Brian. I wonder how much meaningful training we've managed to put in over the last few weeks what with COVID and the busy schedule.

I agree that we'll clearly miss Chair, what I was saying though was that Lee and Albert will make more of a contribution when fully match fit, which will also create more space for Stef, Chris and Andre. It's been too easy for teams to mark Chris and Ilias out of the game as there hasn't been so much threat from elsewhere in the team. As we hopefully bring our best players back and fully match fit, we'll have more threat across the team, even allowing players like Dickie to come further forward, knowing that the opposition defence is pushed further back. I'm hoping we won't need to change systems too much as they seem to suit the players.

Ahh come on, the idea of "lucky" is irrelevant in football. It doesn't exist. Otherwise every win and loss is lucky.

Were we lucky that the ref called a penalty? Well, I've certainly seen equally obvious penalties waved way. Were we unlucky on the freekick in the last game? (It didn't look like a free kick at all to me). Were we lucky that the fourth official gave 3 minutes of extra time for the first half and not 1? Were City lucky that their shot deflected off the defender's leg and past Dieng?

In a game as dynamic as football, every time the ball hits the turf it could hit a divot and bounce weirdly. Sometimes that happens and the ball spins past the goalie and sometimes that happens and the ball sins past the striker's boot, making him look like an idiot.

For 90 minutes we didn't look great. But we scored from two set pieces and came home from Ashton Gate with 3 points. Lets enjoy that!

Charlie is a legend. I love the bloke. But sadly he really isn't quite up to it any more. He just isn't quick enough for the role he plays and so he is a passenger for most of the game.

He still has goals in him because he is smart and an instinctive goal scorer. The thing is, without the ability to beat his man, nip in and out of tight spaces or rocket one in from outside the box, the window for him to score in (so to speak) is very narrow and he has to take the few chances that he gets.

I know that in my head, but in my heart, I still want Charlie on the field and still believe that he is just about to score every time he is on the pitch.

He's ok, not what he was. However without Chair anyone up top is starved. Previous match Dykes got nothing either. Until we fix up the midfield, anyone playing striker will not get much and not look good

Not Lucky At All on 09:31 - Dec 31 by Ned_Kennedys

How on earth were we lucky with their sending off?
King was clearly giving the ref verbals after we won the penalty for 1st booking and he was pulling Stefan back for about 10 seconds before the ref had no choice to give him the 2nd booking.

Not suggesting it was the wrong call Ned, I am saying it was a lucky break for us - one of three key moments in the match that all went our way. Like I said above, the litmus test for whether a decision or event is lucky is often to place yourself ion the oppositions shoes and see how you would react. There were posters here who thought that Dozzell's sending off was 'harsh' even though he was throttling a Bournemouth player at the time. Plenty BC fans would have thought either booking excessive. They had a 'nailed on' penalty denied them, far more obvious than Johansen's against Bournemouth, yet plenty thought that should have been given. That's my point, luck is when events you cannot control, go your way, which they did in all three key moments last night

Good teams sometimes win ugly. We're a good team.

.... And how many points from a losing position have we got this season? That doesn't happen to bad teams.

15 points. We're top of that particular league. Bournemouth and Fulham are rubbish at it, which is why it's annoying that we start so slowly and let them score first!

On the lucky bit, had Dunne been booked before the not given penalty incident?
Because, if the ref gives it....
Our penalty definitely was, as was their sending off.
Poor performance, good result

I'm with you, B. An ugly win, yes, but not lucky at all.

The reverse fixture, now that was lucky (for BC).
