Viera, McBurnie, Sharp Pitch Invaders 06:12 - May 20 with 21762 viewsdavman

Jeez, the football world is f-d up again. There are laws in place for encroaching on the field of play and what happened this week explains exactly why.

Sharp had no time to react to the high vis fat cannonball attacker, who has rightly been convicted and no doubt Viera and McBurnie will get some form of punishment. But Viera and McB's "victims" will get off Scott free even though they are law breakers by just being there. Getting on the pitch is one thing, but if you act like a massive weapon when you are on there, you should have every legal order thrown at you.

Loads of people think it's just an innocent laugh pitch invading, but I'd imagine that, with the percentage of idiots that live amongst us, it is probably really frightening for both sets of players and staff. After all, no pitch invasion, no provocation and no punishment for Viera and Mr. Completescotsname.

I hope they chuck the book at Forest and Everton and threaten them with a behind closed doors game for letting that happen. Disgraceful.

Can we go out yet?

I seem to recall police on horses charging us down on one occasion.

remember it kicking off with palace, ironically, on tthe pitch in the final game of one season, and I'm not refering to the cupmgame.

Back in the early 90s we always went on the pitch last game of the season and the players used to come out in the South Africa Road stand to say thank you for the season's support. It was wonderful being allowed onto the pitch. I don't remember any trouble back then, but perhaps I am looking back with rose tinted glasses

That's exactly my memory too.

On a lighter note, didn't 'we' invade the pitch once, thinking we had achieved something, can't remember what it was, but it was never mathematically possible that day and I have a feint recollection of a late Norwich? goal somewhere, confirming we had achieved nothing that day?

Anyone help out with the details?

That was the Hull game in 2010/11. A win would have seen us up, a draw which the game finished as would have as well I think with results as they stood when our full time whistle went, but then Norwich scored and that screwed it up anyway and we had to wait til Watford the following week.

Faurlin hit the post with a late free kick that then rolled across the goalline and out. Gutted, would have been brilliant for him to have took us up at LR.

Thanks, that DOES make perfect sense now, because I remember a group of us standing there as it happened, thinking "What are they doing, we had to win didn't we?"

couple of things i remember from this sequence of events - the draw and Norwich goal mean that we weren't mathematically promoted at that point, but chasing teams could only go level with us with a massively inferior goal difference, so we were technically promoted, if not actually promoted, and

Norwich's winner was scored in the 96th Minute (Simeon Jackson, remember him, always did well against us as i remember...) so think he scored whilst some of our fans were on the pitch!

Can we not knock it?

That's actually a really good statement, you're right.
Will it reach and impact the sort of person who thinks it's acceptable to charge Ebere Eze with a firework? No.

Yeh it was only really an issue because we thought might lose some points at the Faurlin hero. We were up to all intents and purposes.

Neither does the existing legislation banning both fireworks and pitch incursions.

I guess my point is that further legislation that makes football more unpleasant for all of us is not just unfair but futile.

No I think he means, hypothetically, QPR fans could get tickets to a chelsea game, run on the pitch, and fck them over for a behind closed doors game. At least that's how I read it.

That's a bit elaborate. Spending a decent amount of money and ensuring you get tickets with access to the pitch, plus risking arrest, a football banning order and doing it in large enough numbers to make a difference, merely out of hatred of another football team.

I can feel everyone’s eyes rolling but there is definitely a link between the decline of living standards and football disturbances.

The West is currently in the bust part of the economic cycle and it shows.

St Etianne was always a frightening place to visit.

Leaving the ground after the Ipswich UEFA cup win in 1981 was one of the scariest I've known. We left in silence as uttering one word of English could have had dire consequences.

It was a great day though!

This is different level isn’t it? I can’t believe some of the away squad and staff didn’t get seriously hurt there.

Many will treat this with disdain but I cannot help but ask myself when I see things like this abroad “what would they say or do if that was in England???”. We deserved our rep all those years ago and we were made the pariah of Europe and this still seems to be the case even though I’d argue we’re now leading the way on safety etc (recent events aside)

France in general seems to be a smouldering hell hole across society generally

It's certainly not an isolated incident. We should probably keep an eye on what measures the authorities take and if any of them are successful at curbing the violence.
