Will never happen. I wonder how many republicans are sending their children to school this morning wondering about gun control and whether the right to carry guns outweighs their kids safety

Not a Republican or Democrat issue but a countrywide mental health issue.Democrats have been in total for 2 years , Senate House , White House and nothing so its all bullsh*t.
This crazy sick lunatic told those poor terrified children they were going to die and proceeded to use 2 high powered rifles to destroy their bodies and rip the souls out of their parents and loved ones .Its beyond horrific and we should pray for them

Had tears in my eyes watching the news at lunchtime, some of these Americans are as backward as the taliban, we used to cut peoples heads off and put them on poles, doesn't mean it’s okay in today society, their right to bare arms come from a different lawless time, what ever make them think that it’s still acceptable?

Not sure if age or life in general as made me immune to news like this coming from America..... another mass shooting.... sad..... tragic..... move on with your day
This morning driving into work I heard this on the news and like you loftboy I was moved to tears
How unimaginable must the pain be to send your 8 year to school only for them to be killed....
As said this is not the time to debate what is too be done, but until America decide to do something sensible about the right to bear arms, lives will be destroyed and pain will continue

The Gun Association and lobby group in America is massive and they bankroll an awful lot of politicians.

had dinner with an American couple last week and discussed the previous shooting; he simply replied that another one will take its place in a few days or a couple of weeks tops.

27th school shooting this year already; those poor kids and their families

Absolutely horrific.
How can a modern, so called civilised society have more guns than people. Anyone would think it was a war zone in most of the country!
If they just banned semi-automatic rifles that would be a start! A lobby from a bygone era able to withstand any changes in government legislation because they financially back enough high seats...glad we have our version of democracy.

No-one needs an automatic assault rifle outside of a warzone, in the same way that no-one needs an RPG launcher or a surface-to-air missile launcher. I get that a lot of Americans hunt, live in rural areas where they feel vulnerable etc, so I understand the culture of widespread gun ownership, but there really is no defence of people's right to own assault rifles.

Mental health issues aren't exclusive to the USA, and yet we very rarely see mass killings of this type elsewhere in the world. It's all amount the amount of guns in circulation and the ease of access to military grade weaponry. Texas's Governor recently did away with all background checks and the need for registration. How can an 18 year old just walk into a shop and buy two assault rifles and ammunition as easily as if he was buying a pair of trainers? It's insane.

It's absolutely beyond belief that the same politicians come out after every shooting, arguing that the answer is to arm teachers/priests/rabbis/supermarket workers, and turn schools, religious buildings etc into fortified zones, rather than admit that the problem is the ready availability of weapons of war. Fuc king sickening and utterly heart-breaking to think of all those poor families.

you're dead right. Need to remove all guns bar those old pistols at dawn types that take an age to load in the movies. That still leaves the constitution in place with the right to bear arms but also gives Joe public a shed load of time to get out of there.

Obviously you can't stop people obtaining autos and semi autos if they really wanted them and were prepared to pay through the black market but you could make it so much harder than just walking into a shop.

A lot of this is out of Presidential control. Individual states have a lot of autonomy, the Democrats don't have the numbers in the Senate and Congress to put through the necessary legislation. If Sandy Hook didn't change anything then I can't see how this will. Just desperately, desperately sad.

Thinking of nothing other then those poor children and their teachers and the horrific suffering their families are going through.

May each young innocent spirit who had no opportunity to experience a full life rest in peace.

As for the shooter, may he burn in hell for eternity.

Dont know why we bother. .... but we do!

They don't have the votes in the Senate, Bazza. The Republicans won't go against the nutty gun fetish crowd - quite a few of them are gun fetishists themselves. Still, it must be a great comfort to the victim's families knowing that they're praying for them and proposing even more guns in every day settings. Armed Law Enforcement were straight on the scene yesterday, but outgunned and unable to prevent the killings. And why the fu ck, should teachers/priests/supernarket workers have to carry guns?

True, but ultimately the President has the executive power to legislate any law he wants. He's done so 90 odd times already on smaller issues.

That it's incredibly rare that it happens on a huge national issue that will lose him votes is a consideration, but ultimately if I was a 81 year old politician with millions in the bank and fck all to lose except the respect of 100 odd other old wnkers i'd do it before taking my first shit in the morning.

This x100

New Zealand managed to ban assault weapons. I get that the US has a very strong gun lobby group and people think it's their god given right to own a weapon, but you'd think a mass shooting that has taken out a class room of children would prompt a change in the law.

1791.

That's when the 2nd amendment (right to bear arms) was ratified.
Almost two hundred and fifty years ago. Yet an awful lot of people still bang on about it being a constitutional right, FFS.

I'm sick to death of the rhetoric they (politicians and the public alike, and yes I am generalising here) come out with about being the best country in the world. They're not, not by a long way. They need to get their heads out of the sand.

They have by a massive margin the biggest civilian-on-civilian killings in the world. It's barbaric beyond belief.

They constantly go on about the likes of al qaeda nd the taliban but their take on religion is just as dangerous and backward as any from other parts of the world.

I have a friend out there (Texas) who has a toddler son and she is literally scared witless every single morning taking her son to school wondering if she'll see him again.

Thought I'd post this video as it seems to reflect some of the conversations we are having in the States. The coach is Steve Kerr. Kerr played on the Michael Jordan Chicago Bulls but his father was also the president of American University in Beirut who was assassinated in the 1980s.

RIP. Condolences to the families of those poor children.
Nothing will change. We know it, they know it.
Let's hope the gap between this and the next needles slaughter is slightly longer.
When the Gun lobby's answer to gun violence is more guns you know the sorry situation is f** Ked!!

It's truly terrifying. Been in a grim mood and feeling like crying ever since this broke.

I'm married to an American, they grew up near Sandy Hook in CT and some of the families devastated there were known to them and my youngest brother in law was a similar age to some of them. We have family in Texas - rare voices for gun control.

There are things I like about the American education system - the academic freedom, not being stuck with four subjects from 16 but there is no way we'll ever be moving there and exposing our kids to that level of danger.

It is as sickening and incomprehensible to my American family as it is to us. These people are the minority but the electoral system in that country is just screwed beyond belief.

Those poor, poor children. And nothing will happen.

And you aren’t allowed to drink alcohol in public view, but you can carry a firearm in some states as long as it isn’t concealed.
Unfortunately a lot of Americans wouldn’t give up their arms without a fight, and that could lead to another civil war. It’s almost impossible to get the genie back in the bottle now.
RIP to the victims and condolences to their families.

I’ve lived, worked and travelled a lot in the US and been exposed to much of its extremes as well. I’ve seen the good, the bad and downright ugly of the place and long since concluded: it’s not only the author of its misfortunes, but thickness and ignorance are so ingrained that’s it’s beyond repair.

I think America was a wonderful idea, but somewhere along the way they lost sight of it and frankly, it needs to be allowed to break before it can be fixed. However, I fear that what we’re closer to seeing, is a religious nutter residing in 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue hellbent on facilitating the end of days rather than making America great again.
