Very valid moral questions being asked but in the real world it’s money that talks.
Putting football and sport generally aside I wonder how much trade we do with such nations, particularly arms etc. if there was significant trade there more of our moral questions surely should be channelled there than a football tournament… and I do understand the concept of sports washing when I say that. No one is pulling out of the WC this close to it.
Having worked there for just 3 years on migrant worker/labour law issues, I have made some comments of the positive changes that have taken place from my experience.
Is it perfect? No. But then Qatar is a country that is merely 50 years of age and given that the UK enacted legislation that is older than Qatar itself to outlaw race and gender discrimination, we would not say that either of those factors are eradicated from the UK workplace either.
There systems like OSH and the dispute resolution process are developing and with time, have strengthened. But of course, progress has to be maintained and extended to other areas as well. The ending of the kafala system is a huge development in the region, for which they have been applauded. And, as I have stated here, I have sat in meetings where the global trade unions have echoed their public statements acknowledging the work done to date.
So Qatar is a work in progress and for me, the real test comes after the WC ends and whether Qatar continues with the progress made. With the major capital projects completed, if it wants to transition its economy as per their National Plan of Action, then they have no alternative and to recede would and should see an appropriate response.
However, the problem with wage payment/theft, which is endemic to many countries around the world, remains and is a sad and harsh fact of life for many migrant workers 'globally' - and yes, that includes the UK!
In my view the problem in Qatar are due to: poor business acumen; foreign companies - yes that includes companies from so called developed economies - exploiting the situation; an embargo that rocketed prices, caught everyone out and meant agreed contracts were now unable to meet financial commitments; and COVID.
In many cases, having paid out vast sums for major capital contracts, the Qataris then paid out wages a second time when they set up the Workers' Support Fund. To put that simply: imagine you agree £100,000 for an extension to your home with a builder, of which £25,000 is for wages. However, the builder goes bust or does not pay the workers, and then you have to step in again to pay the workers' wages.
I can't comment on other human rights issues/concerns, as I was not involved in them.
However, for my money, I am still staggered that a country with no real football interest was awarded the tournament. While I was at a stadium full and loud when Qatar played UAE, every other game I went to was devoid of fans. I recently read ticket sales are slow and if people do decide not to attend, this WC could be a washout.
I also have a problem with the fact that despite many smaller stadiums (15-20,000) never remotely selling out and I am talking as few as 50 people at games, they have built incredible stadiums that post-WC, will likely stay dormant. What a waste and what an incredible environmental footprint.
That said, this is not the Qatar WC, it's the Doha WC! It would be like having the tournament where you can get around the venues on the London Underground, which will be a good thing.
Read above about hotel shortages. I'm surprised if this really is an issue should fan numbers be low. That said, the amount of building to be completed when I left last year was huge and repurposing of buildings was supposedly underway, because both the residential and commercial property markets were not full!
Frankly, again, I'm not sure what Qatar is going to do post-WC with so much hotel capacity because I just do not think its really a destination venue yet.
While I would not go to any WC, I've declined friend's invites to return for this one. I just do not know what folks will do to occupy their time when they are not at a game; there's just not enough there to do.
It is not a cheap place to live and while I suspect most will fly in/out from Dubai, this is going to be an expensive time. Given the proximity to Xmas - always expensive - and the cost of living crisis, I can see crowds suffer.
It's happening, so let's make our points, keep encouraging and pressuring Qatar to continue its developmental changes and just go an win it. It's what Elizabeth would have wanted. |  |

He's staying off shore on a cruiseship for some of it. That'll be a laugh, getting fans back to that. Fyre Festival all over again.
Most people staying in Dubai it seems and flying backwards and forwards. Hundreds and hundreds of flights a day between the two. Very green and clean. Paul got quoted £1k for a ticket on one of these flights, about 30 mins in the air, after one of the England games. |  | | |

If we pull out someone will take our place, the tournament will go ahead anyway and we'll be sat at home. It's far too late in the day to make a stand about it now, if we were going to do should have been a few years ago.
When we held the world Cup in 66 it was illegal to be gay in this country still so I think we'd be absolute hypocrites to kick off about playing a world cup in a country where being gay is a crime.
We've also just had the heavyweight boxing title fought for in Saudi Arabia and no thought to pull out of that either

They’ll be talking at length about what a nice bloke David Beckham is. It’s going to be unbearable. Won’t even be any tight topped Paraguay fans to look at. As I understand it, they want to make Doha a sporting hub. I read that as wanting European clubs to winter there and play meaningless friendlies.
We were invited to see Bayern Munich train and they were saying the facilities are superb. Indeed some of the stadiums are incredible looking. The one designed by the Iraqi/British woman at Al Wakra and Al Thumana particularly so.
However, having been to sporting events, it's not as if they are versed in serving the needs of boisterous crowds. If it were to kick off, I wouldn't want to be anywhere near the place and I've got a feeling there could be a troubled WC.
As for workplace death and injury numbers, building sites are notoriously dangerous workplaces and the sheernumber of construction sites, such incidents are unavoidable sadly.
However, if there is anygood news on that front, is the fact that number of fatalitieshave declinedrapidlyas Qatar has increased knowledge, OSH measures and labour inspection systems.
If you go, seeing these edifices rising out of the sand is surreal. However, I think it just daft given the high probability they'll be laying dormant after 18 December. | |
