What about the budgies? 08:20 - Aug 14 with 8231 viewsdmm

What is Ainsworth going to do on Wednesday night? There's plenty to mull over such as player fitness and Saturday's upcoming game, but he'll want to keep the positivity going for the first home game of the season, even if it is an early dead water buffalo match.

It would be great to field the same team as we saw on Saturday but are they all fit enough to play again 3 days later in an arguably more important match? I think they should be but still, I suspect we'll see a few benched. Which players come in is the conundrum.

Someone said Norwich can field a strong 2nd team. Is that right?

I think this is a difficult one for Ainsworth. He won’t want to be subjected to the usual accusations of “binning the game off” by selecting a side that stands no chance.
Yet with a strong Ipswich side to face less than three days later, the League game has to be the highest priority. I don’t envy him his decision on how strong a side to select because whatever he does is likely to lay him open to criticism.

I 've no idea how many changes he could/should make, but I would sugest that it would make sense NOT to play Cook, Fox, Smyth & Armstrong. Let them have the time they require for recovery.

I expect Colback to start the game & play 60ish minutes, probably alongside Dozzell. Richards might take the Chair role, wehich would be interesting!

He needs to go for it. Players can play twice a week, it's early in the season and we need momentum. If we play a half-arsed side it's basically a surrender and sends a bad message to the team and it harms the confidence of all involved.

Norwich are just a team. They're not Man City. They're in our orbit. We should be able to give them a game.

I would stick Gubbins in the back three alongside Kakay and either Cook/Fox depending on recovery/fitness.

Would rest Paal, Dykes, Chair, Field, Armstrong and Smythe.

So game time for Adomah, EDB, Richards, SDM, Larkeche, Kolli, Kelman and Colbeck if fit.

We must persist with the back 3 and wingback.

It will be interesting to see if he takes this route. I would put in a tin hat for Wednesday, field players that need a game and not worry too much about the result. I think beating Ipswich must be the main target, much as a cup run would be nice.

Never knowingly right.

Agreed, they all need minutes on the pitch at this stage of the season. I don't quite understand all this loading malarkey - are players more fragile than they used to be? Surely if anything with advances in sports science they should be more robust?

I mean 40 years ago Villa won the title using just fourteen players all season.

They did but how many of those were dosed up on cortisone to get them through games? Quite a few I'd imagine.

Villa were also fortunate that season that they got knocked out of both domestic cups early, LC second time of asking and FAC first time of asking so only played 45 games, a luxury that their closest challengers Ipswich, who were also in Europe, didn't have.

I'm with Bosh on this one ... forget the score, write it off, we never progress in the cups even when (on the odd occasion) we take them seriously.
Play some kids, lose by a cricket score and move on. Its not great for the fans who have paid to go but in all honesty I learnt my lesson years ago about going to cup matches.

No way will Cook or Fox be able to play 3 games in a week after not playing since Christmas. Also expect Smyth and Armstrong to be rested from the starting 11 after looking shattered at the end of Saturdays game. Would like to see Kolli and Larkeshe being given a chance. I think all Ainsworths focus will be on the Ipswich game and it’s not as if we’ve got a glamour tie next round if we win anyway.

It's ludicrous the stupid refrains from those who should know better about how the game has moved on and players/squads can't possibly play and compete at the same levels as just a few short decades go - when, as I've pointed out many times before, sports science/physio has improved out of all recognition, the pitches are comparative velvet, and players often play fewer games, not more, than they did in the 1970s and 1980s. Give me a break!

Players mainly get 'match fit' by, duh, playing matches, Ainsworth has pledged to make us competitive in every game we play, the cancer of our Cup surrender-monkeyism needs to be cut out sooner rather than later, so we should play everyone again and tell them Rangers expects.

I,. by contrast, recall with a perpetual frisson the joys of our 1982 Cup run (CLive Allen's late winner vs Palace anyone?), the nape-hair thrill of 'Abide with Me' at Wembley, and the bitter, ref-assisted robbery of the replay. I guess we're about as different kinds of fans as fans can be and still be fans.

With all the FFP problems you'd think the club would do all it can to have a cup run, 2 Championship reserve teams to beat and we are in round 3.

I imagine it will be a patched up team though and we'll lose with likes of Larkeche, Archer, Gubbins, Richards and Kelman all getting a game

I'd love for GA to prove me wrong... How amazing would it be getting to a 1/4 final of a cup for the first time in 29 years ... playing an Arsenal or Manure, or even the old enemy again....and the money that would mean for the club...
Keep dreaming Stainrod :(

In the 70's we played the same number of games as now, 46 plus cup, but at a much slower pace and fitness level. Having watched football for seven decades the sport is as different as mens/womens football today. They both play the same game but.....
(Had put almost seven decades in there then realised it was seven. Coronation year 1953.

I’m normally the one to say the cup is important but I would rest our key players and play the kids
The league is way more important atm

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

As it's QPR we can field a full strength team and still lose at home to Norwich's reserves if the players attitude is wrong.

Unless the sports science suggests certain 1st eleven players need managing to avoid injury - (like Smyth/Armstrong) - you go with a strong team. If the game dictates, I'd like to see how some of the youngsters are. Players like SDM have been decent in this competition before, and debut cameos for Kolli and maybe another will be great for them, but we need games to improve our fitness and familiarity with a new system.

You'd hope there's also players like Richards that are knocking on GAs door asking for a chance to impress, and I think it might be a good opportunity to see how Kelman is in the role Sinclair played on Saturday, or how Larkeche looks for a full 90.

Momentum is important though, especially with our performances.
