Never used them, now the drivers are striking over pay, surely the Wayne & Waynetta’s out there will be gutted?

Good for them . At least they’re keeping fit delivering the food. These companies will
and are contributing to an obesity epidemic which will dwarf the usual killer, smoking in the coming years.
We are a nation of fatties , sadly . Highest in Europe. 😞

Good luck to them.

Ultimately though, this is the model to follow:

Did it years ago and was a great gig.

Drivers income gradually ebbed away and now its just a racket. Companies losing millions but top brass taking salaries. That’s all these businesses are now a days.

Working practices based on there’s always someone who is more desperate then another to do it.

These companies just wouldn’t work without a tip culture in the USA.

Bugs me when so called younger generation who complained about how the the older generation treated them then do the same. Business seems to bring out the worst in people.

All sounds good , but it doesnt work for all .
Part of the attraction of doing a job like that , and taxi work which i have experience of is that you can work when you like .
Yo have no set shifts , no holidays to book , if someone offers you a free ticket for football just go , no phone calls , getting your work covered . Win a few quid , just dont do any work for a while then just log on a carry on . Want to pick the kids up from school ? Just stop for a bit , then carry on . Want your beer money for the Rangers ? Just nip out Sat morning for an hour or two .
The trade off is no sick pay, holiday pay, or employee rights , its a personal choice.
The best bit is having no boss .

Yeah, I was shocked to learn that none of them are profitable, just exist on speculation!

'All sounds good , but it doesnt work for all'

7,000 registered co-operatives owned by 17 million individual members and which contribute £34bn a year to the British economy would beg to disagree with you.

This particular one will not work, unless they include some incentive , if you are getting paid hourly why would you do 4 drops an hour and not 2 ?
Why would you work Sat night ,when you get paid the same as Wed morning.?
100 jobs in 3 years isn't overly ambitious anyway

If that means that there aren't 50 of them parked on the double yellow lines outside your nearest Maccie Ds then the strike will be a good thing.

Why stop now, just when I'm hating it

That sort of proves the point , if it's such a crap gig why are there so many of them , they have to buy the bike , get insured , get riding gear and pay for fuel .
If the business case does not stack up ...er .. don't do it . ..unless of course the flexibility has some value ?

That's not how they operate though. It's a CoOp model with plenty of flexibility. I'm not sure how we are misunderstanding each other?

Also, they only launched fully post covid less than a year ago so not sure where the 100 in 3 years has come from?

Never ordered from this bullshit. I don't mind the guy who works for the local pizza/Chinese place delivering. You get to recognise them and they are employed directly.

Some fking guy working for himself because he can't get a job elsewhere delivering food to me? Yeah fk all that noise.

They do it because it’s a money in gig at first. Over time the realization becomes its money out as well hence why so many leave and why so many give it a go.

It’s a file your own taxes gig here so come tax time all change.

At the risk of making this another thread North has to kill when he returns from holiday, if Border Force sat outside every local McDonalds checking documentation, they would kill these businesses overnight…

In Sweden, Uber, Bolt & Wolt had to unionise so that their delivery drivers could use them as recognised employers to extend their working visas , otherwise again, the business would die overnight.

Drivers in the end started having 2/3 phones with different delivery apps open. Crazy, long waits, food left a long time at restaurants and vehicles etc. They hussled to be fair making bank.

Companies figured it out and got creative in stopping them. They want you to take every delivery regardless of the fee or distance. If you did you would put 1000,s of miles on your car and make $15/20 and hour before gas and taxes.

It’s the Silicon Valley way.

Prop up businesses with billions in investment that lose vast amounts of money for years while ignoring all local laws and worker’s rights in the hope of building a monopoly while ignoring the rules. See also Uber. Then whack up your prices when you’ve driven everyone else out of business. Funnel the money back to the tiny amount of early investors.

Meanwhile salaries and working conditions all join a race to the bottom.

In addition to the points already raised about the gig economy and the role delivery companies play in the obesity crisis; they're also killing restaurants.

A restauranter friend of mine pays between 30-35% fees to the delivery companies. However, that's not the real problem for restaurants: it's the fact that at least one of these outfits has, as I understand it, a huge kitchen in Acton somewhere, in which they now cook and so restaurants are going to be bypassed.

Covid has merely expedited that which was coming. The delivery companies and Amazon have killed the High Street, and governments around the world have been slow to react to the impacts these are already causing, and they're even slower to respond with solutions.
