Cifuentes picked the team the vast majority of supporters would have gone with after the weekend game against Norwich, and had they played as they did in that game they’d have won. Then they phone in this slop. How do you manage that?

You can't. Not never. Not no how. The difference between the Norwich game and this one, with identical players wearing hoops, appeared to be forty light years not four days. We really don't know which team is going to show up on any given match day.

To be fair, when the team sheet came out, your thoughts were ‘yeah, seems roughly about our best team we can field’.

There is of course the benefit of hindsight that we all get, but also, possibly, the benefit of foresight. And foresight says, after 50 odd years of games played in the Potteries, ‘take all your big boys with you, field and terrace’.

Games like these, joined up passing you’re going to have to earn. That means six foot defenders right across the back, the sort who win headers, the sort who win tackles. This lot are not Norwich at home.

As for zonal marking, IMO every corner where that results in a goal against, a manager should be taken to the centre circle before the restart and have his arse publicly whipped.

Great report - only point have is that there are a few paragraphs without criticism of our beloved gloves merch salesman. I'm sure you will be able to rectify this after Bristol :-)

OLd Harlington not fit for purpose to bright spanking new state of the art training facility. This will work woders.

Weve changed the manager how many times and finally found what appears to be a good one although not sure there was much wrong with most of his predecesors.

Several new faces since last season who should add experience and guile to the team. You soon see them dragged down into the sticky sickly slime that enveloped our players like a pestilance.

WHY WHY WHY

I feel I have been mugged yet again after coming out of rehab for being prepetually attacked by the rough boys from the estate down the road.

Great, snarling report.

Finally forced myself to watch Marti's post match - he came in looking like a Latin god and is beginning to look like someone in the queue in Greggs.

I get what you mean but we didn't really lose as we lost the physical battle, we just didn't do the basics well enough, we could have started Field, Dykes and Frey at Stoke, I'm not sure the score is any different if you switch off at corners and don't put the ball into the box

Certainly agree with Steve’s point about the zonal marking though. Really wish we’d bin it.

Not hindsight, looking forward I’d play Field over Colback. He won’t phone it in and gives us extra height. He kept us up single-handedly the last few games of last season. I’d play Frey a fair bit because he is the best finisher and we need goals. I’d drop Paal to give him a rocket.

And I’d pray.

Colback gives us goals which is what we need from midfielders and Field does not score goals and his form this season has been very average indeed. In saying that I would try and get him a place in the side whenever possible. He was excellent last season but that is last season. Frey is a tough call, he scored a nice goal against Norwich but done very little in his other sub appearances. Paal is one of our best players and should not be left out of the starting line us.

I wouldn't trust these players to win the one on one duel that man marking would bring though

Why not keep 3 players up. It seems poinless having Chair , Smyth /Willock back for corners.

We take 4 of their players plus the corner taker out of the equation then less congestion in our box. There will be 5 oppo (provided they keep 4 back with our 3).

Just saying like

that was a really tough read; walked away 2 times as I just knew what was coming and there was no likelihood of any humour to lighten the mood.....

how could there be, this was a miserable Wednesday night in Stoke, for crying out loud

well done for managing to put down any reasonable description of the debacle; more effort went into this write up that was put in by the entire team on the night!

Nice tribute to Handyside. Good player, indeed.

I remember watching that incredible foul on him at the time thinking Brevett and Bracewell had lost their minds running half the pitch to scream at him lying on the ground. Even in 1998 it was reckless. But then I looked up the match report to see who the teams were and this was Kegly Keegan's view of the tackle:

"It was only a yellow card foul. The ref overreacted," said Keegan afterwards.

Incredible.

Genuinely the worst tackle I've ever seen live.
Extended highlights feature Brevett arriving on the scene to accuse him of diving haha.
It's worth following the 'on this day Grimsby Town' account just for John and Rowley on club coms.

As is quite often the case the only thing decent about our performances is your match report Clive.

I'm just sat here thinking though has anybody ever asked any of our previous or current management teams WHY this happens?

What do the players actually say about it afterwards?

WHY do they think that this is acceptable in any way shape or form?

WHY do they go from looking half decent in one game to absolute effing lemons in the next?

I've never known anything like it, if yer shite then yer pretty much always shite, fine I accept that but WHY do they show they can bloody do it then deliver complete dross to follow it up?

Colback vs Field? Zonal vs man to man?

All of this, as the saying goes, is like reshuffling the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Ps: Colback no question about it.

You might get away with 1 or 2 players having poor games. But not when it's all of them. 4s & 5s was erring on the generous.

I couldn't finish that. Not because it's a bad piece of writing, quite the opposite in fact. I just ran out of emotional stamina.

QPR is an analogy to my recent tooth extraction. Cracked it many years back, it soldiered on until 18 months ago when it was re-filled in a long odds effort to save it, at which point it was really only a matter of time before it all got very painful and had to come out.

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

This is one massive difference between the US sports media and the English version that I must confess I wish we had at QPR.
After most US pro sports game the locker /dressing/changing room is open and the media rush in to question the poor fcuker that missed the game winning kick or cost the team the win .Its must see tv and brutally honest in most cases .
This is on top of the manager and star player facing the media in the interview room which they get grilled in most cases .
In the PL and across the leagues only the hero is interviewed so we get zero input from the players when its going badly.
There is no excuse for Marti, his coaching team or the players for not going for it against Stoke .It makes no difference really to lose 2-0 instead of 1-0 while we push for the equalizer plus they nearly scored anyway in that crazy sequence of 2 or 3 great blocks late on.
Where was our 5 shots in a row or intense pressure when we had to have that point .
