As I said earlier, it felt very much from the initial reports like the victim was seeking financial compensation rather than seeing Chair go down. The lawyer even said something like "16,000 euros is two weeks wages to Mr Chair".

But if Chair didn't do this why should he cough up? As stated we just don't know what happened.

Well this is the danger isn't it, of football tribalism, but also rushing to form judgements based on Google translated Belgian media reports.

Chair might well have behaved like a right privileged little dickhead, shoved in front of some poor family in the queue for a bus giving it the big "don't you know you I am" and then when pulled up politely on it gone absolutely bezerk and whacked a bloke over the head with a brick, preventing some poor lorry driver with five kids to feed from working, leaving him in hospital.

Or some horrible, sleazy truck driver has got a bit handsy with Chair's no doubt very attractive and bikini-clap young wife in the queue for a bus, got a justified slap for it and is now years later when he's realised the guy is worth a bit of money trying to coin it in.

Or something else entirely.

We don't know which it is. So difficult to start saying he's done nothing wrong, or on the other hand he should never play for the club again.

Chair's young wife has got bikini-clap.

I'm not going near him if he scores!

Whilst not ideal (!) this doesn't really affect our chances of survival too much in my opinion. Willock can play on the left, Andersen on the right with Hodge of Colback coming in.

Hodge of Colback sounds like a medieval squire.

Maybe an accusation like that which started the row?

This all sounds so weird and smells so fishy...

The Belgian press report talks about him going to court in person today 'for the verdict, with a new lawyer'.

Verdict? Verdict of what? Has there been a trial? If so, why hasn't Ilias been present? Wouldn't his lawyers have wanted to cross examine witnesses and examine Ilias himself? It doesn't sounds like there's been a trial... And if there has why would he turn up for the verdict with a brand new lawyer?

I have no idea what I'm talking about here but none of this adds up does it? How do criminal courts work in Belgium? A judge sits there, reads about the account from the tabloids and immediately dishes out a verdict?

I have a feeling somethings being lost in translation here. And as Clive says - there has only been one report - the ones from Nieuwsblad.be which has clearly been picked up by some scumbag from the Sun and then immediately re-broke via all the social news outlets. The translated original news report doesn't contain the word guilty, just that he's been 'sentenced'.

The whole clamber to decide whether we still love Ilias or hate him - and indeed any demand for QPR to speak up and divulge more is ridiculous. We know next to nothing here and what we do know has very little basis in normality.

I think we better just be patient until we know what the hell is going on.

On the first point, as said above, the reports a month or so back in Belgium said there had been hearings which he'd failed to show for. Sounds like they didn't take it that seriously, then at the last hearing it got a bit serious so they've rocked up today with a new lawyer demanding the process gets repeated and the court hasn't liked it very much (which, to be fair, most courts wouldn't like that very much).

If Chair wins on appeal, he may be sellable; if not, QPR can forget it. He's worth nothing and will be playing with Adel wherever he's at.

Not to worry we have at least Willock to sell ... oh wait ... doh!

If Chair can play, I would assume he would get mucho grief from the oppo fans and call the club into question playing a convicted criminal.

Without Chair I doubt we can survive relegation, that's the dilemma for QPR.
Rotherham team selection will be interesting!

Am I missing something? Has Chair miraculously turned into Lionel Messi overnight?
Why wouldn't we be able to survive relegation without him? He's only one player who hasn't managed to single handedly win any games this season. He's hardly Taarabt is he!

I would Imagine that he had been Instructed to appear at today's proceedings, not just rock up so to speak.

These are after all bloody serious charges against him after all.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

So what was his plea? Was he present to offer his plea?

Admittedly I have very little experience with criminal court proceedings but I have never heard of a trial whereby the defence doesn't pitch up to 'hearings', turns up to a verdict months later with a new lawyer, gets 'sentenced to prison' but then doesn't go to prison and nips back home in time for training as he's starting against Rotherham tomorrow.

I'm not arguing his innocence nor his guilt - It just all seems absolutely batsh*t to me.

If there had been a trial - a proper one - I'm pretty sure the British tabloids would have picked that up and reported all the gory details with no concern for the wellbeing of anyone involved. All we've had are these strange translated news articles suggesting something happened in France and now bizarrely there are criminal proceedings occurring in Belgium laced exclusively with broad accounts clearly from a prosecution point of view, almost as if the prosecutors themselves want it leaked to the press... Why could that possibly be I wonder?

Just all seems odd.

If there's anything definitive the club will have to comment on it. So until they do, there's really not much point trying to guess what's going to happen. If Chair's not involved tomorrow, people might speculate, but even that could be explained by the whole affair negatively impacting his concentration and mental side of the game.

So far all we have is premature sensationalism from tabloids. There's no actual story yet, and probably won't be one for quite some time.

You make it sound like we’re blessed with a squad of Messi’s! Chair’s done more than most of our squad to single-handedly win games over the past few years so yes it’s a worry if he’s not available for the rest of the season.

A journalist has picked up the phone.

"However, the 26-year-old has the right to an appeal and is not currently incarcerated. In theory, that means he is available for Saturday’s Championship game against Rotherham should the club choose to select him."

The plot thickens.

This story has so many inconsistencies. A crime allegedly committed in France but tried in Belgium. The defendant is handed a prison sentence but is allowed to go free pending an appeal. Meanwhile, the club release a vague statement that the legal proceeding is yet to reach its conclusion.

There was such outrage at Mason Greenwood sexually assaulting his girlfriend.

He was suspended immediately the allegations came out.

His girlfriend - who is still his girlfriend - dropped the charges - but he still faced trail - I believe there were no decisions made as to guilty verdicts.

Yet his career was on hold and the abuse he received for being a wrong un has meant his career in this country was done.

The incident with Ilias. This happened years ago apparently, the victim was in intensive care with fractured skull - potentially could have been life threatening - and yet Chair was not suspended - has supposedly been found guilty - and many of us in mean time - greatly supported him due to his form etc.

Something slightly misguided about all of this.

And the weirdness and randomness of life by ways of comparison.

Nearly killed someone - if that's true - should be locked up for a long time - and banned from a career in football.

All of this has been extremely strange as with like many others - have only heard about this in last couple of months.

WEIRD STRANGE DISTURBING DISAPPOINTING HARD TO BELIEVE

F**KED UP WORLD NO DOUBT !!

‘Het Nieuwsblad report that Chair denied he was the man who threw the rock and asked for an acquittal.

They add that on Friday morning he came to court for the verdict himself, with a new lawyer, and asked to reopen the debates. The request was said to have been rejected by the court.’

Makes it seem like Chair perhaps hasn’t taken the charges seriously if he’s appointed a new lawyer and only turned up to the court today to request that the case is reopened. Maybe too little too late and it doesn’t reflect well on Chair or the club if they’ve allowed it to reach this stage before taking it seriously.

"it doesn’t reflect well on Chair or the club if they’ve allowed it to reach this stage before taking it seriously." - genuine question but what's the club got to do with it?

If I was accused of bashing someone over the head and only took it seriously at the end I doubt my employers would be publicly involved to this extent.

With all due respect I’m assuming you’re not potentially worth £4m/£5m to your employer but I might be wrong!

Chair’s a valuable asset to QPR and was the subject of a £4m/£5m bid only a few weeks ago. The club should’ve been all over this with very expensive lawyers on the case to ensure a prized asset doesn’t end up in prison so that he’s available to try and help us avoid relegation before being sold in the summer.

Perhaps the club has this well under control but the reports about Chair only turning up to court today with a newly appointed lawyer suggests otherwise.

That would have been a very reasonable point prior to his being convicted. Presumably all of these permutations would have been probed in court. No doubt Ilias's defence lawyer made the kind of argument you outline (he was provoked, or it was mistaken identity, whatever) but that was clearly rejected by the court. In the UK if someone is, for example, convicted of murder they are described as a "murderer". There is no reason as far as I'm aware to hold a Belgian court in less regard. Of course there are miscarriages of justice but until we hear a credible argument of that as part of some appeal its not unreasonable to take the court's verdict as fact. Just because the reporting of the case might be ropey on google translate it doesn't make the conviction itself unsafe. Agree there is no reason to say he should never play for the club again - after all, the supposed point of prison is to rehabilitate. But I don't think anyone can now argue its simply a matter of opinion what happened - he might be guilty, he might not - because a legal verdict has been delivered.

But this is the thing, there hasn't been a trial like that, because he didn't show up to them.
That doesn't reflect well on him at all, like he just wasn't taking it seriously, but there hasn't been a trial with a prosecution and defence and testing of evidence like that.
