Probably my favourite report of those I've read for its congenial and compelling emphasis on nostalgia/recovered childhood as the basis for footballing fandom, topped off with that poetic allusion to the Embrace song. The references to the writer's father and grandfather and sitting on the wall in Batman Close I found particularly touching. There are different generational layers of being a supporter, and we tend to take our aesthetic and affective footballing cues from the era in which we were first bitten by Rs love. For me, in the latter half of the 70s, it meant going up early for lunchtime reserve games before the main game, seats in the Paddock with my friend Tim Briggs, his dad Gordon, and his mostly silent Uncle Peter, post-match potatoes from the SAR chipper (whose patron's face is branded on my brain to this day) and James Alexander Gordon (no relation) with the final results in the snug car back to Bucks up the A40.
That's why, in my own case, I still long with an insatiable romantic ardour for the restoration of an open Loft terrace, a team dripping with swashbuckling flair, proper programmes with real news and stats, and players who stay with us for more than five minutes - counter-cultural, maybe, but the REAL thing in my little-boy-in-adult-clothing QPR world, however much the 'real' world dilutes and corrupts. In that way, in our different domains of 'old-fashionedness' (a term you used against me once that your piece might invite you to revisit), you and I are very alike, Clive.
At the same time, the lovely paradox is that 'it's time to make some new memories'. F*ck yes! The past is ever-present, but the future is blue and white. Keep believing! [Post edited 28 Apr 19:21]

It’s nights like that that open the eyes of the youngsters who go.
They want that!
That feeling of elation and joy that you just can’t get anywhere else.
Clive you make such a wonderful point about days gone by with family.
My dad has had a cancer scare the last 18 months , season ticket holder, not missed a home game and that thought of one day me not meeting him in the Forever R’s bar or outside or chat for hours on the phone the next day about the good bad and the ugly scares the sh*t out of me .
He took me when I was 18 months old, through the 80’s, every home game, and I only stopped going with him when I started to play matches myself on a Saturday .
It’s a reminder, no matter the result to treasure it while it lasts .

Think I've got some dust in my eye......
You're so right about the generacional thing..... I was at the game in 68 with my late father when they scored so early that the floodlights hadn't been turned up to full power..... We played them off the park that night but like so many games that season we lost.....
We were there in 76 on that wonderful afternoon with the great Brian Moore describing the action on the Big Match and then I went to Molineax 10 days later.....
Now living so far away from HQ I only get to see the games online, but last Friday was one for the ages, I had actually said to a couple of younger work colleages, Spurs and Liverpool fans, that I thought we'd do a number on them, but I think they thought I was just daft...... never in my wildest dream did that scoreline enter my thought, maybe sqeek a 1-0 or 2-1.....

I remember us chatting in the pub before the opening game at Watford & you asked me what were the worst Rangers performances I could remember. Four hours later I had another match to add to that list! West Brom at home on Boxing day 1968 still tops the list!
And then comes a night like this & you realise that however atrocious we've been at times over the years, none of it can stop us wanting to still be there for these very special moments!

Just a bye the bye but one thing that annoyed me was about Leeds.
Not once did they change the way they played. 0-0, pass, pass, pass. Do f all. 0-4, pass, pass, pass do f all, all the way to the final whistle.
Football can be played different ways. If you’re getting f ucked up the bum and you don’t like it, switch it around to a better way of being f ucked that is at least less painful.

Incredibly good. Was the first time my 2 kids 4 & 7 watched most of the game with me. When Fields goal went in all of us were screaming. I've never had my kids that interested as we don't watch live due to time differences (New Zealand). A very special game indeed and QPR have 2 extra fans.
Just was just a night for QPR in general. Everything clicked which is rare but when it does it really is magical.

Thanks so much for the report superb stuff as ever I've watched nearly every video clip I can of the evening I am still gutted that I couldn't make the game after being at all the other home games.
I'm in the same boat as Enfield, I had an operation last Tuesday on my prostate, which I'm told went well so i very reluctantly couldn't go, jeez the relief to know we had won and relegation was a thing of the past was massive. We sit on the edge of R block and I've watched the videos and felt the atmosphere, that was a very special evening indeed.

Having watched the highlights from Leeds game at Middlesbrough where Leeds won 4-3 It was noted (by me anyway) just how fast and good Leeds were going forward, I mean four goals away from home against a team who are by no means pretty decent is pretty impressive.
So what do we do? we get a clean sheet at home, the second on the trot. Score four goals at home (Jesus wept) where did that come from?
I'd say we were prepared/Managed/coached to death last week, every one of our players knew what to do and bloody well done It.

Indeed, as much as Friday is going to be one of the most memorable, that 26 Dec 1968 was probably the worst performance I'd seen at the time. Ron Springett looked, let's say unwell and I remember an orange being thrown at him, also the anguish on Ian Watson's face. I was also at the Friday evening defeat by Lids when the floodlights came on just in time for Mick Jones to barge in the winner - and didn't Bobby Keetch take the worst penalty of all time?
