Good shout Disco. He made the squad in summer 1984 alongside Clive Allen ( and Fenwick?) for the South American tour (the Barnes Brazil goal tour). I thought he might have got a sub appearance in one of the three games but never made it and that was that for his England career.

Yep, that was the tour mate. Some good English strikers in that era, So it demonstrates how good Stainrod was to make that Squad. Good to see him in that England strip. Class. Class. Class.

I'd have to have Charlie Austin in there and maybe Shaun Derry, I think I'm a bit younger than you though as the first team i remember would be the 1992 squad. Really struggling to thing of good defenders with Maddix, Shittu and McDonald all unavailable. Rowlands and Langley unavailable too is annoying. Can't think of many right backs either so picked Orr over Bignot. Smithies Orr Peacock Carlisle Wilson Ainsworth Derry Faurlin Cook Eze Austin Subs Camp Padula Hill Holloway Gallen Furlong | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Wouldn't argue too much about Hill for Roeder, Derry for Holloway a toss-up, Austin for Furlong...Charlie did more at the top level, I suppose, Furlong more of a week-in, week out war horse.

I'm fairly certain he got into the England squad but never actually played a game.

Agree. One of the poorer signings we got from that lot. In the same draw as Tommy Langley. Stevie Wicks however and why not Dave Webb. The only player in the team of ‘76 that never represented his country.

That was annoying, During Euro 96 it was even more annoying that Les didn’t come on at all during the tournament he should have featured at some point. Les coming on during the Germany game would have been a game changer when we were at stalemate

I always got the feeling that Venables for whatever reason didn't rate Les. He only won four caps under him in 18 months, started three games and didn't finish any of them. He was just off the back of a 25 goal season for Newcastle as well, his third 20+ in four seasons. I appreciate that Shearer and Sheringham were first choice but Les should have been the next in line.
