Best way to watch TV? 21:29 - Dec 1 with 2505 viewsdannyblue

Ladies and gents, I think you might be able to help me.

What's the best way to set up a TV these days?

For the last couple of years we've been happy with getting it all through a firestick plugged into the TV. However that's going away, and I'd rather not have a prime subscription. In fact I'd rather not have any subscriptions at all.

I've cut the cord. I want it to be broadband. I have no aerial (shit reception on the side of a hill), and don't want to pay Virgin or anyone else for TV access.

I want to watch:
BBC Iplayer
Channel 4
ITV player (for the occasional England match)
NowTV if I decide to pay for the odd weekend of particularly good football on sky.
Maybe something to let me buy the odd film if I want to, but probably prefer buying a cheapo DVD tbh.

Any ideas of best approach?

Also happy to buy a new TV if that helps.

Thanks!

Most TV's now are Smart TVs that connect to your broadband in that you can load apps like iplayer, All4, NowTV, Netflix etc on them. Look at Samsung and LG in particular.

The new Sky Glass is viable too if you can do the subscription thing, worth a look.

We’re in a similar position, can’t get Sky because of a tree across the road, got sick of Virgin. Can’t remember when but all the aerial points were scrapped so can’t get terrestrial. We have an Amazon Fire Stick in one room and a Roku in the other, and they are pretty much identical. We have Prime and Netflix, the kids log in away from home. Have never bothered with Now Tv. Apart from these, and things we have tried like Mubi and BFI Player, have never bothered with any of the hundreds of add-ons. I subscribe to NRL TV and ESPN Player for college football, but can’t access them on the devices, so have to plug the laptop into the TV by HDMI.

I miss the convenience of flicking around the Sky channels rather than having to go out to the home menu and back in from the start to BBC, E4, etc, but happy not to be paying way over the odds for “premium” content that doesn’t interest me. I think a Roku stick is £15! Not sure as I’m a Prime subscriber if you can pay for Amazon downloads on the Roku without Prime, but Roku has all the UK free broadcast streams

Chromecast with or without google TV. Cheap and simple to use. Barely watch any commercial TV any more, they can keep their reality rubbish.

I use a Roku and a Chromecast.

Both good.

Thank you everyone. Sounds like I just need to get a roku to stick into my existing TV and replace the firestick. A new TV can wait.

I would just like to tell you all that I have no effing idea what any of you are talking about. I have a magic electric picture box in my living room and a metal wire thing on the roof.

Hope that helps.

I have my computer in the same room connected to one of the TV HDMI inputs. You can watch all the channels you listed via a browser. It's so much easier to choose what you're watching on a computer than by using a remote control. The biggest problem is having too much choice and getting distracted by things like LFW! It might take a while to figure out but works great once you do.

I actually have a ten year old 32" LG TV as my computer monitor. Someone I know was chucking it out so I got it for nothing and mounted it to my wall above my computer desk. I watch lots of things on that now. Also depends on how many people you live with - i.e might not work so well in a large family situation if others want to use the computer etc.

Sounds good and would work well for me, but need something for the 4 and 7yo to use too...

Well danny mate, most people prefer to watch TV slumped on the couch, but my best way is stretched out on a big bed, three firm pillows and a remote control.

I have an nvidia shield and iptv.
Don’t think it’s strictly legit but I don’t care.
It’s like a 10th of the cost of cable tv.

Amazon Prime and Netflix via an Amazon fire box (iplayer on it too)

After you buy the box, NF and Amazon are about £11 a month together. Well worth it.

Just run it through a 4k tv with sound bar and sorted.

I have Roku at home but it is a bottle of Japanese gin. I had never considered it doubled up as a TV provider but it tastes pretty good.
