OP wrote, " would have meant little without the impact of a great musical score. " Only problem I have with some of the great music on this thread, is that many if not most of the films were great films in any case.
TV series were mentioned, the Jimmy McGovern series Broken was very special but I loved the accompanying theme, the Nina Simone version of Randy Newman's 'I think it's gonna rain today' One of my favourite songs, (especially by Dusty Springfield).
From the fifties to the nineties Georges Delerue wrote orchestral scores for hundreds of films from Le Mépris to Platoon. His music was often much grander than the films it was written for.

Whilst off sick from work some years ago, I stumbled across a film on TV called Beautiful Girls. A really nice heartwarming film set in the American midwest in winter and about a bloke going back to his hometown meeting up with his old mates. A marvellous soundtrack which I bought on CD but found, as with certain other films, that the CD differs a bit from the music in the film. Still very good though and currently going for pennies on Amazon.
