With just a little over week to go before the new season, lest not go us into all that heartbreak just yet.

Anyway, just for fun.
With all the talk about Zimmer being a major part of Dunkirk. Of which I agree with.

Umm I cant really add to that.

This is my choice of movies that would, I feel would have meant little without the impact of a great musical score.

Just three choices.

https:

There are many, many more so I would be very interested in your own choices.

Cheers.

True Romance already mentioned several times. I also enjoyed the music for The Third Man. Very fitting.

There used to be icecream vans in Hackney that played the Third Man, very spooky.

Here's one for Mick S:

The stunning and ground-breaking use of incidental music on Mean Streets. The opening scene changed film music for ever.

Spoiler alert.

This one is an end scene, and utterly superb. Really clever use of music making for a brilliant ending to a brilliant film.

I was never into the James Bond franchise but this peice of music still stirs something within.

Exiting the ABC cinema in Hounslow as the sun blinds your eyes during the 70's summer six weeks holidays I suppose.
Happy days.

Both these films are classics but the score really helps make them such.

OP wrote, " would have meant little without the impact of a great musical score. " Only problem I have with some of the great music on this thread, is that many if not most of the films were great films in any case.

TV series were mentioned, the Jimmy McGovern series Broken was very special but I loved the accompanying theme, the Nina Simone version of Randy Newman's 'I think it's gonna rain today' One of my favourite songs, (especially by Dusty Springfield).

Something for old hippies...

And I can't miss my favourite anti-capitalist/esoteric religion flick (apologies for the truncated song, but the whole thing is on youtube)...

@danehoop 'Goodfellas'

@BrianMcCarthy 'The stunning and ground-breaking use of incidental music on Mean Streets'

Right from the opening minute of his first film Who's That Knocking at My Door, music was a powerful force in Scorsese's movies

@Orthodox_Hoop 'Last of the Mohicans one of my favourite films ever, partly because of this'

Agreed. A masterpiece given an even more epic quality by the soundtrack.

From the fifties to the nineties Georges Delerue wrote orchestral scores for hundreds of films from Le Mépris to Platoon. His music was often much grander than the films it was written for.

The whole soundtrack is great and deserves to be bumped back to the top!

Not sure that the impact of these movies would have been minimal without the score, but I like listening to the scores apart from the films:

Requiem for a Dream, Clint Mansell/Kronos Quartet

Edward Scissorhands, Danny Elfman

Full Metal Jacket, Abigail Mead

Meiko Kaji, star of Wandering Ginza Butterfly (1972), also sang the theme song:

The emotion at the end of the scene is palpable and Bob Dylans music accents it beautifully.

Whilst off sick from work some years ago, I stumbled across a film on TV called Beautiful Girls. A really nice heartwarming film set in the American midwest in winter and about a bloke going back to his hometown meeting up with his old mates. A marvellous soundtrack which I bought on CD but found, as with certain other films, that the CD differs a bit from the music in the film. Still very good though and currently going for pennies on Amazon.
