Getting a Dog 10:04 - Jul 15 with 15169 viewsBrianMcCarthy

Ok, lads this is huge. Don't mess this up!

I've always wanted a dog. I mean really wanted a dog. Always had a dog as a kid. Either a Labrador Retriever or a Golden Retriever. But I could never have one as an adult. i just moved around too much. Wouldn't be fair.

But, with the last few years, and now the last few months, I've been working from home almost full-time. I've also finally got family living nearby to mind my dog if I do have to head away for work or holidays.

I'm single with no kids. I live in a small city but with plenty parks and fields nearby.
If not now, then I'd have to wonder when.

The question is - am I mad? What am I not considering?

Have any of you any advice, please?

Hopefully.

I just rang the local rescue centre - they only have four, and no retrievers.

Poll: how many games this season....home/away.

Kids and wife really hassling me to get a dog. I want one too really but I know they are a big commitment. I want a blue staff or a staff x bully. Very popular and actually difficult to buy as there's waiting lists.

Occasional providers of half decent House music.

Got negotiated (forced) into it 7yrs ago & was always going to end in “oodle” as they don’t shed fur everywhere. Went Labrador size vs smaller variations & he’s been a great addition to our household. Couldn’t imagine being without now.
Some great stories already & well done to the rescuers.
It will be your dog - kids like the fun stuff not the poo bag end of it.
Do the training even if like our doofus he only got about 50% of it.
Also find a nice kennel/ home stay you can use when on holiday - if don’t it gets harder & harder to leave them.
Enjoy the choosing & temperament for your h/hold the biggest call - mellow or high energy?!

Would it be a fair guess, given the way things are, that there may be quite a lot more dogs heading to rescue centres soon?

Had a variety of dogs since I could walk collies mainly then moved onto rescue dogs lab border collie cross , Danny mad as a box of frogs from day one , then had two rescue labs from dogs trustin Harefield , lost kasper feb 14th this year he fought a long hard battle with liver failure broke me dela our yellow lab decided to start fiting Xmas morning early hours , had never had one before rung the vets asked for advice , ended up being diagnosed with a brain tumour around New Years , 5k for a scan 500 for the consult with the vet , due to both there. Ages insurance didn’t cover much , vets bills for both of them since feb 2019 prob close to 10/11k would pay every penny again to keep them with me . Now have two jet black bundle of hell labs just got to 6 months had to buy extra height stair gates as Ollie is a decent jumper and cleaner the normal size one aged 4 months .

If you are looking for lab drop me a pm I started to volunteer with lab rescue home visits picking up dogs to take to new owners , I can put you in contact with the fantastic people who run it

https://www.labrador-rescue.org.uk/dogs.html Amazing people.

rescues are expecting the COVID dogs back in huge numbers once things settle down and many got dogs as way of getting out the house once People go back to working the nov;etc will soon ware thin , dogs used to somebody around all day every day womto know how to cope being left I and will either start destroying the house from boredom or leaving accidents around the he house as the back door isn’t as open as it was when peop,e were at home for weeks at end .

Last thing. I’ll ad is when it comes to that day you have to say good bye for the last Time expect to experience the worst pain imaginable , never gets easier in fact as years go by it gets worse .

If I knew how to add some pics I’d stick some of the hundred or so pup pics of Stan and Ollie they are tiredly stunning dogs even if I say so my self

A dog adopted from a kill or non kill shelter will be the best move you could make Brian and will give you such joy for 15 years of the life span of the breed .Once you walk in every dog tries to push through the bars because they want a forever home and know deep down their days could be numbered .
I got a pup from a shelter who rescued her from a bad place and apart from my children is the most important thing in my life .I swear she is more intelligent than humans and never ever fails to be waiting at the door when I arrive home .To think she was abused and apparently 1 day from being shot (according to the vet ) fills me with both dread and anger 6 years later but then its pure contentment seeing her lying there so relaxed .
I wish i had the resources and property to rescue more abused animals but its incredibly expensive to do the right thing sometimes .
A friend of mine in Ireland has a Greyhound and loves that dog with a passion. She clears stone walls in one jump and runs free but comes back immediately without bothering animals or anything .
A dogs love is unconditional

The best two things on planet earth are dogs and cats, in no specific order.

The saddest thing for any kind hearted soul to do is go through life without experiencing the unconditional love of a hound.

If you're a good man (and you always seem like you are) it'll be your best decision ever.

Without my fur babies, I'm not sure I would still be here.

It would be a very long post if I were to talk about them, got me through some dark days.

Some great positive posts on here about having a dog/s

Dogs are a man's best friend but sadly man is not always a dog's best friend, why there are so many rescue's

Lots of puppy farms in Ireland so Brian has to be careful.

A lab can be a wonderful dog, I've had 2 but as others have said they eat like a horse and can be scatty and can malt a lot. I could write another long post about them.

Animal cruelty makes my blood boil and I could quite easily serve time if I caught anyone abusing a dog.

We got my labrador when he was 6-months old from a rescue centre. The rescue centre specialises in rescuing dogs from puppy farms and he and his siblings were about to be banged over the head and put into the bin because they had not been sold. Thankfully someone rescued the entire litter and we ended up with one, and he's been brilliant ever since

I've just been on the Pets4Homes website; I only checked out two breeds, Vizslas and Dachsunds. Due to the current situation, puppy prices have gone bonkers; Vizslas are now going for upwards of £3,000, which is just stupid. I guess this must be true for many breeds making the re-homing option even more appealing.

Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?

Pets4Homes is used by puppy farms and scammers BE VERY CAREFULL

When I was looking for my dogs, some guy offered to sell me one for about half price from up north and send it by courier

Blimus - I didn't know that! People are advertising themselves as potential owners on the site, such is the shortage of puppies.

Yeh I've been on that site loads recently and there's dodgy stuff going on there for sure. Photos used from Google images claiming it's their dog and to send a deposited if you want one. Putting prices up once interest us shown. The prices have gone up for defo mate. Staffy full bred are £2000 - £3500.

£800 to stud a Vizsla. Guess who's dog recently had his knackers off?

I'm not saying all are but it's unregulated, anyone can sell pets on there.

Often they will change their name/phone number when selling more pups from farms, it's very organized.

Same with Gumtree.
