Was that a Friday evening fixture? Easy because United were playing safe, if I recall correctly their next fixture was a cup final.

Have you replied to the correct post Boston?

As was stated, this match was on New Years Day & United were relegated that season. I think it was the first year that NYD fixtures were played unless it happened to fall on a Saturday.

Trevor Francis, Sheffield Wednesday header in a 2-0 win, after 5 straight defeats and 5 shutouts in a row for me, including being mascot for a home defeat to West Ham. He scored a brace that day and I vaguely remember David Seaman having an absolute stormer between the sticks

Gary Bannister v Chelsea 1986. I probably couldn't see much of it as I was 10 and stood in the corner of the East Paddocks.

In or around that era. Probably a John Byrne or waddock goal. Found QPR through following Ireland and the Guinness sponsorship

I think it would have been a semi-final they were preparing for Bos as our game against them was played in mid April. The FA Cup final in 1977 was played relatively late that season as Liverpool's next game after it was the European Cup final which was (nearly) always the last midweek in May.

I think Stanley was in the Carlisle side that day and based upon his performance we signed him at the start of the following season. Saw his first game at home to Forest , made the first goal and scored the second , that was a great season to be following the R's
