During our slump/blip (delete where appropriate) we have heard the usual nonsense trotted out about the fact that we are 'lacking ambition' because we didn't sign another attacker during the window. Same people I am sure who still think we should have splashed out millions on Wells (2 goals so far this season) The fact is we did 'splash out' on a an attacker who's main asset allegedly was to use his speed to get in behind the defence - Gray. We saw it splendidly against WBA and against Cardiff and ...err.... well that's it really. 5 goals from 20 appearances is a pretty poor return. (Garnished us a few points I'll grant you that, but still) We were supposed to have three different types of strikers 'Poacher' Austin (ahem), 'physical' Dykes(ahem) and 'mobile' Gray (ahem ahem) So while all three have struggled this season, I don't think the club is at fault - all three are costing (or have costed us) a decent wedge and I think all three need to up their game on the run in.

So, with Sir Alex Ferguson's endorsement, we may have been able to meet the striker challenge for a mere £26 million per annum
Can anyone see any problem with that?

More seriously, the truth is that the club has already made perfectly reasonable recruitment decisions to give us more goal-scoring potential - Dykes, Austin, Gray. They are each different in style and threat. That gives the manager the chance to set up the team differently and to change tactics during the game. As we are currently in the play-off positions, we should probably acknowledge that the plan is working.

That was meant to be humorous

I absolutely do not want us to sign Ronaldo or any other £26m striker(s).

I would give Armstrong a go , in the first team squad at least .
It was put to me on Sat that his confidence could be damaged but we are not fighting relegation , the crowd would be right with him and it may give some experienced strikers a wake up call .
West Brom have just signed Andy Carroll on a six month deal (salary unknown accepted) and injury prone i know but I watched him give Blackburns defence a physical shellacking the other night , He didnt score but a huge handful to deal with . It was the sort of performance that I was expecting Dykes to provide when we signed him .
We are arranging deckchairs on the Titanic just rotating the midfield ... IMO

Edit.. failing that start Grey for the next 5 games straight , Odubajo/Mcallum at LWB and Willock up with Chair ...IMO

How many of us have seen Armstrong play?

There's identifying a problem and finding a solution. At this stage I doubt Armstrong is the solution. In 1 or 2 tears, maybe.

I'd be tempted to put Willock up front with Hendrick and Chair supporting, Stef and Field behind them.

Force us to keep the ball on the ground unless it's a set piece when the defence can come up. We've generally not been winning headers anyway.

What I've noticed about us is that we don't seem to have the midfielders running in behind the defence this season. When we had Eze and Bright they would score goals because they got in to the box beyond our strikers but this doesn't seem to happen so much now (apart from saturday with Chair). We never seemed to be so reliant on the forwards we had (thankfully!)

I have, albeit briefly, twice. Electric pace, very raw though.

As already stated Strikers cost money. But it doesn't take away from the fact the three we have at the club should be giving us more. But recently the issue hasn't been us being wasteful, but us not creating as much.

MW stated on the QPR Pod that he feels teams come at us hard for the first 45-60mins then run out of steam - I'd love to know if there is any stats to back that up. But nevertheless, it means we've had our way of playing found out and some teams can at very least stop us from playing for the first 45. Which is where I hoped we could develop another plan, formation or tactic to break teams down as us playing through teams or counter attacking doesn't seem to be possible in the first half unless you're Reading and give us all the space in the world.

I thought as well as the two goals against Reading, Dykes' hold up/lay off play against Boro was the best I'd seen from him. I don't know what his current injury is but hopefully he can play a part on Wednesday night and keep on improving.

Also as has been noted, Chair seems to hold on to the ball longer than Willock and so will more often than not miss the killer pass. But then as mentioned above depending on who the striker is, we need to be better at adapting our game accordingly to them.

Poll: How old is everyone on here?

There is no point beating ourselves up about the quality of our strikers, as has been mentioned to buy a decent relatively good one is going to cost us serious money, which we can't/ won't be in to purchase anyway. I'm not always convinced those old school 20 plus goal players are actually around at Championship level, Mitrovic excluded. The goals need to come from a range of our attacking options, Chair, Willock, Adomah and either Austin, Dykes or Gray, depending on which is chosen to fit the formation. As an aside always thought Adomah would do a decent job as a fill in striker.

9 goals from 25 is pretty decent from Dykes when you add in his battling injury and getting back to fitness. Physically I think he does well against players of similar stature but probably needs to learn how to be a bit more clever against more domineering centre backs.

Warbs' comments on Gray seem to have reflected recently how sharp he's looked in training but it doesn't happen often enough in games. He talked very earnestly after the wondergoal game about getting fit so we do need to see a bit more of it now I think - currently he's more about strength than speed.

I couldn't make it on Saturday but thought Charlie did look a bit brighter and I just can't see how his body would have given out at this stage - not to the extent it has. Am hoping he can either be used more intelligently and realistically or get his mojo back, or both.

I'd like to see more opportunities to get Albert up the middle. Part of that could involve switching to two CBs and having Sanderson at RB, McCallum or Wallace at LB, but it's probably unlikely.

He was on loan at Torquay and doing well .We chose to recall him , they must have a plan for him .

Am I being a bit naive in thinking that our playstyle doesn't really need a 30-goal-per-season striker? Feels like the majority of our goals (and big chances) come from either Chair/Willock from the edge of the box or someone making a late run (i.e. Albert against Cov and on Sat)

The need for a 20 goal a season striker is a myth that's long since been busted.

As ngb points out, we're doing pretty well.for goals scored and not so well for goals conceded. That said, I would like to see our central defenders present more of a threat from corners

I mentioned a few weeks ago - I think it was after Charlie scored the winner v WBA - that I thought our strikers were 'just about doing enough. I don't think that anymore. Far too much scoring responsibility falling on Chair and Willock

So the opposition take turns to foul Chair and Willock collect the odd booking before being subbed for someone to carry on the plan .... and we are done

I have been saying the same but it would be Amos not Hendrick. he is quick to press . Hendrick is a decent player but I dont know why he is here ?

Tony and Pukki seemed to do the trick last year...

Yeh I agree with the OP.
I think most clubs would look at our forwards of Austin, Gray, Dykes as a decent attacking force in this league.
They definitely need to do better.
I've no idea why they're not performing at the moment .

Toney got 30 plus I think and Brentford still finished outside the top 2. Last time we went down Austin scored 18, only one short of Taarabt's 19 when we won the title.

The stats are undeniable - you don't need any one striker or any other player to score 20 goals in a season to win things.

I agree. But I don't think it is unreasonable to expect our three main strikers to average 30 goals between them over the course of the season. At the moment they are on 17 in 32 games which is slightly better than aa goal every two games (remember I am talking about a combined effort of all three). If they maintain that average until the end of the season, they will clock up 26 goals - paltry enough imo

You're relying on outlying stats to prove a point that can't be proved because all the evidence says otherwise. I'm not saying that teams with strikers who score 20+ don't or can't win things, clearly they can. I'm saying it's not necessary - at all. And that's not an opinion, it's fact.

Would like to see him come off the bench, though.

But yeah, we have cut our cloth according to our budget, and rightly so. I hope Dykes, Austin and Gray (plus the threat from Chair, Willock, Amos etc) is enough but if it isn't and we are in the Champ next year then that's the way it goes.

Personally I'm not panicking yet and still fancy us to go up.
