Electric cars to be taxed per mile. 14:00 - Nov 26 with 7573 viewsSnipper

3p per mile.

I’ll stick to petrol for as long as I can.

I think all vehicles should be taxed per mile (and do away with VED and petrol tax).

For example, many moons ago I had a Mitsubishi Pajero 4x4 but used it occasionally and covered about 2k miles per year.

Yet because it was considered anti-environment I was taxed to the hilt in terms of VED and my parking space at home.

My flat mate at the time had a nice eco enviro-happy Toyota Yaris yet she did 60 miles a day, 5 days a week covering some 15,000 miles a year.

Which one of the two vehicles is doing more harm?

How are they going to work that then?
If I did 12,000 miles over the tax year do I have to write a cheque out to the DVLA for £360?
And thats on top of the Road Tax that they have also started charging EVs...

When I charge up my car at home I'm already paying tax on the electricity I've bought, using money I've already paid income tax on.

This makes me really angry, what a nonsense. Just tax billionaires and big corporations if we need more money, p1ssing off the people who voted for you is not the way forward

This is what I don’t understand. Who will check you have actually done 12,000 miles. A regiment of tax inspectors checking every car at the start of the tax year!!!!!!

The switch from petrol/diesel towards EVs has reduced tac revenues from motoring. EVs do just as much damage to roads as other cars. So not really a surprise. The implementation should be fun, though.
Cars < 3 years don't need MOT, which would be when.mileage could be checked. How does RR tax foreign vehicles? Are drivers going to have to submit mileage returns every year?

That is not really the point though is it?

This is Diesel 2.0. Encourage punters to swap, then start taxing them on it.

Yeah this is defo a cynical tax but people say they are sticking with petrol and diesel haven't done the maths.

It's no shock...... no pun intended.

I've no idea how much per mile the powering up of an electickery car works out as - there must be a figure no?
So if it's 10p a mile the Goverment For Change has just taxed people 30%.
Be interested to find out what it actually is on average.

We were looking at an EV or Hybrid next year and stuck in a Planning App for OSP as I'd already pre-run the infrastructure thinking "this is the future".
Our Council have been banging on for donkeys about the Climate Emergency bollox with LTN's and other such shite so i thought this wouldn't be an issue...... got canned as we are too close to a tree and too close to a corner which is farcical.

Petrol me up baby.

You imagine it will come around based on MOTs as they recorded the annual mileage of a vehicle.

Quite how it will work for vehicles in their first three years when they don't get one...who knows.

I have a petrol car, but my mileage in the last 12 month MOT period (approx 8,500) would give a 3p per mile charge of £255. I imagine I spent much more than that in fuel duty but its an invisible tax because all I really see is the price at the pump.

If I drive my EV outside of the UK do I have to fill out a tax return to get a rebate on the miles driven elsewhere?

It's pish, an ill thought out tax grab in the wrong place!

The answers as always is "It depends"
How much do you pay for your electric, where will you charge, when will you charge, how many miles will do?

We are very lucky, we have solar at home, so on the odd day when its sunny we can charge the car for gratis, but I reckon even if you pay to charge at home its still cheaper than petrol.

Caveat, charging at those forecourts can be very expensive, so if this would be your main way of doing I'd be cautious

I did a quick calculation. If you get 30mpg in your car then the tax taken at the petrol/diesel pump works out at about 12p per mile. That's made up of both fuel duty and VAT.

Probably as part of the MOT process where your mileage gets recorded each time.

In my opinion EV’s are the equivalent of the Mini Disc meant to be better than what exists but ultimately something will come along and make it obsolete

The cost of putting in the right infrastructure is huge if the government thought EV’s were the silver bullet they would have invested big time they’ve dabbled at best

As someone said above Diesel 2.0

How much do you think it cost to put in the infrastructure for fuelling ICE vehicles?

My ford transit cost 10 grand more than a diesel .
That 10 grand is taxed .
All for a tax of some sort but let’s get up to 50 % of national fleet before we start taxing more.
Incentives are slowly disappearing.

Obviously it would have been big (albeit with help from the petrol companies opening garages up etc)but it was the one option open to allow cars to be available to the masses

My point is that EVs have been around for a while now and the appetite to move people over to it with the correct infrastructure is limited

EVs aren’t the answer if you want to move people away from petrol in my opinion

If you disagree then fair enough but I’d been interested to know why

I just want to know how they collect the data. Do they retrofit some dongle into your car? Or rely on servicing (but EV servicing is every 2 to 3 years not annual). Or does this only aply to new EVs?

MOT records the mileage, then will then adjust your tax code or if self employed or contracting you will have to declare it.

Going to kill new car purchases as you don't MOT for 3 years so nice big tax bill waiting, or people will shift new cars after 18 months just to confuse the the treasury.

Its a genius plan, nothing can go wrong.

The car industry has gone down the EV route although i agree that hydrogen would probably be better, and i have an EV.

The infrastructure is coming. The eaiest is if tou have a driveway and install your own charger. I costs me about £7 to completely fill it for upnton400 miles (but i have a big battery in mine. Others are less so). The convenience of being able to do it at home is great.

The issue is people who love in flats. You canr dangle a cable out of your window, across the communal area to your car eaisly.

The infrastructure is coming. I would say London ia covered pretty well and most cities and large towns will be too. Im surprised that motorway service stations are so afr bwhind where they should be though. Dont run out of juice between Bristol and Exeter on the m5!

Why stop now, just when I'm hating it
