Cricket 2025 County/International Thread by Superhoops2808 9 Apr 2024 13:39With the football season coming to a close in a months time, some here will turn their attention to the smell of freshly mown grass and long days sat in the hot sunny weather watching the great game of cricket.
As a member of Kent Cricket Club, I got to enjoy my first match of the season against Somerset at Canterbury over the last few days. Unfortunately, as is always the way starting the season this early, the first day was lost to rain. In fact nearly all the games were affected by rain, some without a ball even being bowled.
But I did manage to get to see 2 centurions at Canterbury yesterday and a very enjoyable day of cricket (even if I did get sun burned head - Yes I know should have taken a cap).
Did anyone else get to see cricket over the last few days? I know we have several Middlesex supporters who no doubt enjoyed the 'runfest' at Lords (over 1300 runs I believe)
I've started a new thread for the 2026 season, and I've started it now because the T20 World Cup starts a week today. (And in fact 2 months and we will be chatting county cricket red ball)
In a group with Italy, Nepal and Scotland and a pretty solid squad I expect that we will progress beyond the group stage. After that who knows and will depend on fitness. Curran and Salt played very well in the first game warm up game v Sri Lanka but tougher tests are ahead. Anyway, here is the squad for England (albeit still provisional).
Harry Brook (captain), Rehan Ahmed, Jofra Archer, Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Josh Tongue, Luke Wood.
Be relying on Archer to stay fit (as per usual) - But hope that Brook finally stands up as captain, and Banton and Jacks perfom like we know they can at county level. If all that clicks should be a good watch. |  | | |  |

They're going to have to take the hit and close Lords for a couple of years now to sort this pitch out aren't they. Awful surface, not sure what a batter is supposed to do with some of these deliveries i.e. Bethell and Smith this innings.

Almost time they reduced tests to four days.
Even though this test has had little evidence of Bazball, its only going last two and a half days max.

Agree with this. I really don't think i can part with £130+ for a Lords ticket to watch what is essentially a lottery because of the pitch. Refunds galore due to day 3/4/5 lack of action, future tickets sales affected potentially as result and it's reputation as 'The Home of Cricket' in tatters. And matches too early/late in the Summer to accomodate the pantomime Hundred. It's shameful. |  |

I think they need to find a happy medium type of surface. I find tests like this far more enjoyable than the ones where teams make 400odd. Surfaces where teams get 200-300 are for me the best. Obviously this one is too bowler friendly. |  | | |

The ideal is good healthy pitches with a decent bit of competition between bat and ball, but not impossible. I like to see good batters bat, not just desperately try and survive and then get a grubber that nobody could stop if they are playing remotely properly.
My dream is always for two first innings of 350+ but nothing silly, and then a nicely deteriorating pitch for days four and five.
As a Durham man, delighted for Emilio Gay. He's been fantastic since signing for us. Rode his luck as you have to on this, but an assured 57 I thought. Really hopeful for him as an England player, and great to have a kid from a low income non-private school background making it to opening for England. | | | |

The ideal is good healthy pitches with a decent bit of competition between bat and ball, but not impossible. I like to see good batters bat, not just desperately try and survive and then get a grubber that nobody could stop if they are playing remotely properly.
My dream is always for two first innings of 350+ but nothing silly, and then a nicely deteriorating pitch for days four and five.

Saw him at Northampton a couple of seasons ago where he impressed agaisnt Surrey. He went to Bedford school but may have gone there on a scholarship. | | | |

The outfield was still drying out from all the rain in the morning,so although the sun was shining,it took time to try and get the pitch ready for play.Maybe a shorter lunch might have been in order,but another 4 overs and we would have only got 50% of our money back.
The 1st day they were going to play until 7.30 in order to make up time,but yesterday when the sun was shining they came off at 7pm.

At the Oval on Sunday, they were allowing anyone who went straight to the Surrey Hampshire game could get in for £5, if they showed their Lords Test tickets at the gate.
I do believe generally, most county games you can get in for free there after 4pm also. There were a few egg and bacon ties on display later in the day.
No consolation for not getting a full days test cricket elsewhere, but quite clever by the Surrey hierarchy to think of this deal. | |
