As a member of Kent Cricket Club, I got to enjoy my first match of the season against Somerset at Canterbury over the last few days. Unfortunately, as is always the way starting the season this early, the first day was lost to rain. In fact nearly all the games were affected by rain, some without a ball even being bowled.
But I did manage to get to see 2 centurions at Canterbury yesterday and a very enjoyable day of cricket (even if I did get sun burned head - Yes I know should have taken a cap).
Did anyone else get to see cricket over the last few days? I know we have several Middlesex supporters who no doubt enjoyed the 'runfest' at Lords (over 1300 runs I believe) I've started a new thread for the 2026 season, and I've started it now because the T20 World Cup starts a week today. (And in fact 2 months and we will be chatting county cricket red ball) In a group with Italy, Nepal and Scotland and a pretty solid squad I expect that we will progress beyond the group stage. After that who knows and will depend on fitness. Curran and Salt played very well in the first game warm up game v Sri Lanka but tougher tests are ahead. Anyway, here is the squad for England (albeit still provisional). Harry Brook (captain), Rehan Ahmed, Jofra Archer, Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Josh Tongue, Luke Wood. Be relying on Archer to stay fit (as per usual) - But hope that Brook finally stands up as captain, and Banton and Jacks perfom like we know they can at county level. If all that clicks should be a good watch.

| Cricket 2026 County/International Thread on 09:55 - Jun 8 by TheChef | Yeah - took our eldest along for his first Test match and we got what, 9 overs? Saw two wickets I suppose! We too stuck it out till around 5.30 when I decided we should head home, pretty much the same time that they abandoned it for the day. Ah well... |
We left at 5.30 once play was abandoned and we walked to St John’s Wood station, only to find that there was no Jubilee line trains so we had to walk to Baker Street instead. Ok for me but my 81 year old mate was struggling a bit towards the end.

I don't get it, he's only got max 18 months left as skipper, can't a boozy night out wait until then? You are 35. I don't see how he can stay as captain - and therefore in the team - unless he had popped out to try and haul Atkinson back. Atkinson also has no brains. Should be sacked, we can find another Slurrey dobber from somewhere. English cricket fans - as someone wrote, permanently need a brick wall nearby on which to bang their heads every few weeks.

It's a good point Stow and I know he's a decent player, even if we shouldn't read too much on that track. I'm just so frustrated if this stupidity costs us Stokes as captain, especially for the Ashes next year. I can't see Brook being as good a skipper.

Stokes is as brain dead as anyone when he’s not on the cricket field, and he’s pretty crap on the cricket field at the minute. How many incidents has he been involved in now, going back to 2017,which resulted in a court case. Should we continue to overlook his off field antics because he wins test matches occasionally?

Share your reservations about Brook as captain. Surely there has to be someone better although the management are now committed to him so we’ll have to hope it works out.

If we had some young thruster ready to skip, then would reluctantly agree. Brook is a brilliant bat but not sure there are many brain cells there and you can't sack Stokes for misdemeanours then replace him with another recent culprit. Which leaves....er um? Duckett (also a culprit) Gay (not yet!) Bethell (surely too young, but maybe) Root (been there, but can imagine in an emergency) Brook (also a culprit) Smith (not certain of his place) Robinson (erm no) Tongue (recent culprit) Atkinson (recent culprit) Bashir (not certain of his place) I mean, go back to the county game and find someone? But who? Nightmare. [Post edited 9 Jun 8:49]

If the Aussies can overlook sandpaper incidents when it suits them,I’m sure we can do the same with an off field incident, but is he doing enough to keep his place in the team now? I’m still p@ssed off with him after spending £7k to watch the 2017-18 Ashes series, which we could’ve been more competitive in if he had been in the team rather than sitting at home twiddling his thumbs. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

We would need an all rounder without him, I am bereft of ideas as to who. More I think about it, if he too isn't tarnished by previous behaviour, unless they really believe in Brook perhaps we could go for Bethell in a Graeme Smith type way. Real danger of ruining him early, but at least it would be a punt. I do hope he keeps his job though, maybe one last warning and a one game suspension. IF what is being said is true as to what happened of course. [Post edited 9 Jun 9:17]

Im certainly not going to defned Stlinson for the i cident. But to call.him a dlobber? He has 76 wickets at 22.5 in test cricket. James Anderson's average was 26.45. Yes i get thar Atkinson has only played 17 tests. But his record is very good.

Rehan Ahmed, but it leaves us without a front line spinner. Would take Jof, Robinson, Atkinson, Tongue as the attack. Would rather see him keep his job though - even though he's been poor with the bat, he was our best bowler through the Ashes and nobody else is anywhere near him in terms of captaincy. Doesn't help that his vice captain's diet consists mainly of crayons.

I think that is the right decision by the ECB, for once. They should know the guidance, it's not the first time, either. Despite what Michael Vaughan has said, Stokes was out of line. The investigation has not yet concluded, so it is probably just a temporary suspension. Jofra Archer and Jordan Cox are in as replacements. [Post edited 10 Jun 16:06]

So we should sink to the Aussies level is that what you are saying??? No, we should get rid of Stokes. Been giving it the Bigun about a total reset since the ashes and as captain should know better. He has a history as it is so time for him to go And I wouldn't lose any sleep if McCullum went too. I think Bethell would make a good captain and lets go back to the drawing board and get a decent team around him. Lots of youngsters in the Lions team who are better than some of these dumb arses and underperformers. [Post edited 11 Jun 12:10]

Interesting opinions - my initial despair at the thought of losing Stokes for this has mellowed somewhat. I still don't think (by all accounts) he deserves to end his career here but the big question for English cricket is really if this Key / Baz / Stokes regime is worth keeping on until the end of the Ashes or if the new broom should start now. Been a big supporter of those three for at least trying to break the perennial cycle that only Andy Flower has been able to break - ie overpraising good players in English conditions then wondering why they fail in tough assignments abroad in different conditions; it hasn't quite worked but at least they tried something relatively new. In an odd way the Lords test win made me think that triumvirate's time is actually done. Suddenly thinking Ollie Robinson or Gus Atkinson are the solutions because they bowled line and length on a minefield is just the sort of short-term thinking that has cost us for decades. On the other hand, the selection and performance of Gay on such a track - yes please. But can we now really see this side and this management beating Aus at home, now their own convictions of following their gut, being aggressive, looking for pace and hard hitters, having Stokes as the follow-the-example skip, etc are badly damaged at best? Won't that leave us with subpar Bazball against the ageing Aussies who want to go out with one last (horrific) swansong in winning in England for the first time in a quarter of century? Lose that series and of course all gets swept away and Bethell may take over and it would be the end for Duckett, Archer, Atkinson types etc and in with the new blood. If we accelerated that to this summer, would it give us any better or worse chance next year? Not sure. I just want the best chance that Cummins, Hazelwood, Lyon, Smith and Starc do not have their grinning mugs raising the urn over here. [Post edited 11 Jun 12:11]

I'd be gutted to lose Stokes in this manner, one of our great all-rounders and an excellent captain. For him to resign and potentially retire would be a great loss - glad he seems to have been talked off the ledge. I think this article is excellent and is probably where I'm at - https://www.theguardian.com/sp The Ollie Robinson point is interesting - I think you can look at it two ways, either that they're waivering on their plans after a poor result, or they're learning from their mistakes and being a bit more pragmatic. The bowling attack is definitely lacking, after seeing Carse get pumped all over Australia, so no issue with them trying something new. I think that Stokes deserves one last crack at the Ozzies next year, after which he and Baz surely move on. If we throw it all out now, we're looking to Bethell or Brook to lead the team and a new coach to come in, with barely a year to stamp their mark over the team. If we wanted to make the change, we do it in Feb/March. Not in June midway through the summer.

Atherton made the point that Stokes has been in the job four years, which is about the limit to be in the job and not many England captains make it that far anyway. So I'd punish him for the misdemeanour but keep him in the job, maybe give him one more go at the Ashes next summer; and that would give the ECB some time for actual succession planning (Brooks might be VC but I just don't think he is cut out for captaincy).

So the article says this: The problem here isn’t so much that Stokes broke a curfew. It’s that to begin with, England’s management decided to set one. This Cinderella rule was brought in so they could be seen to be doing something after their own bad management during England’s winter tour, in particular their failed attempt to cover up that situation with Brook, and their decision to send the players away for four nights of rest and recuperation in Noosa, a place best known for its beach, bars, and craft beer scene. Now, correct me if I am wrong - Stokes is part of this said England management. He would surely have been involved in this curfew agreement. Its a bit of 'Dont do as I do, do as I say' if you ask me. If it was the end of the series and they had won it, I would feel a little bit more sympathetic but they have won one test and could still lose the series. Hardly anything to celebrate yet as I see it I think Stokes has been a great servant for England but to me this is two fingers up at the ECB and the fans. Maybe let him keep his place, but he really should not be captain any longer if he cannot lead (and thats the keyword) by example

Sam Curran could replace stokes, but isn't in the squad. So we will need four seamers, so they probably won't play a spinner. That never works on a decent pitch. Personally I'm pleased they go out and have a few drinks, don't want them all to be robots. And as im going to the oval next week I'm annoyed that Atkinson and stokes won't be playing.
