Not sure I’d have Varane as first choice even with the current players only though I appreciate he splits opinion and some really rate him. Assuming we’ll be 4-4-2 you have to be at least quite good at everything to play in midfield and he’s not even quite good at most of what it needs. Perhaps would be closer to that if he hadn’t been looking for a move from about five minutes after arriving.

Agree. It would leave us light, but this is a player trading model. At some point we have to start selling players we have spent some of the £25m on under this regime for more than they cost, rather than just players who were here from before them. That’s a player trading model. That is theoretically how we meet PSR and become more and more competitive.
Hoping this is just a negotiation tactic to get the price up.
You’d then think we’d probably need to sign at least 2, if not 3 central midfielders for the season ahead.
Spot on. It would be a win-win sale for me. As you say it’s the trading model and in his case I don’t think it even weakens us (with of course the caveat that he does need replacing). I’m intrigued by what the offer is: he went backwards last season (IMHO) and I would be surprised if we can get fortunes, but who knows? His data on metrics like blocks and ball retention are probably quite impressive, but despite a certain swagger he doesn’t pass the eye test under close scrutiny.

Stating the obvious but he probably needs a loan, somewhere like Reading or Wycombe would be ideal.
I have no idea about him in all honesty and have never seen him play, and generally loans are good useful at this age....but some at this age can go straight into the first team or squad - plenty of 18/19/20 year olds at a higher level than ours so it's far from impossible he could at least be part of the first team squad. I guess as said above they will look at him in pre-season and see which avenue they think is best.

Ah, we’re at the point of the season where the youth are the answer to our prayers.
What have you seen of him other than his 1 appearance for the first team?
He’s a 19 year old who’s made 16 appearances at adult level in professional football. I hope Stephan takes a good look at him too this pre season. It would be great if he turned out to be really good. But I’m not sure there’s anything yet to suggest he’ll be a first team squad player in the Championship this season. At this stage last summer, this is what people were saying about Alfie Tuck.
Also, it might be prudent to manage expectations with some of our young players for their sakes and ours.
Yes he is the answer to all our prayers. That’s exactly the point I was making.
ps. Hopefully your bed sheets have dried out a bit now we’ve signed two keepers.

Compketely agree but with Field , Hayden and potentially Varane leaving he might help in making up some numbers if push comes to shove.
Maybe a radical suggestion, but with so many attacking options out wide and up front, i wouldn't be averse to seeing a midfield two of Madsen and Chair. Just think Ilias could do well here and for me, the double combo beats both Madsen-Morgan & Madsen-Varane.
Regards who we are selling. Can see both Varane and Kolli leaving. Ie potentially possible to sell both for a couple of million, if we get lucky. One too inconsistent, but maybe trade on the name alone and the odd solid professional appearance, and the other would have an exceptional show reel to view.
Ironic, given that the wonderful Sarah Cracknell has a season ticket in SA Rd.
When his agent calls, maybe the club says “He’s on the phone”.
Is she getting the band back together. With Jona on bass guitar.

I've wondered about a Madsen/Chair midfield combo too.
Main downsides I can see are that both of them play on the left, also a two man midfield would have to cover a lot of ground. Illy could manage that I think, but Madsen is slower than a wet week in Bridlington so I think his game would likely suffer. A third midfielder on the right could make it work though. Like Vale perhaps?

Apparently, according to the Twitterati, we have made bids for 2 CMs. One in the EFL the other SPL. Both rejected.
Be nice if the SPL player was Josh Mulligan from Hibs. Bona fide box to box, Duracell bunny, run all day type. West Ham already meant to be in for him. Not sure how we'd afford him without someone going out the other way for actual money, though.

Yeah, I agree. Josh Mulligan looks like what we need.
Kemper was wages, which we have, from letting Cook and Hayden leave. Ward and Charles, were Cooper fee and Hammer wages.
We did get £1.5m from Norwich for Field, and some small pennies for the Walsh loan, so we do have some Bank. If we spent that on Mulligan, who is 23, that would be a decent investment.
