We don’t really want anyone playing 40 games a season. Ideally the squad is deep enough, with enough quality, to rotate most, if not all players on a regular basis.
Injuries tend to hit hard when players are over played and over worked. We’ve seen it time after time. We need players to get fit and stay fit this season. Effective rotation is key to keeping the momentum going throughout the entire season, as opposed to a good 3 month stretch before they start dropping like flies through injury, only to see the season peter out with a whimper.
I agree, that's why I said 'available to play 30-40 games' they don't have to actually start them all. Otherwise we're running the likes of Mbengue into the ground and he's playing 40+ games again. I'd rather have two RB's of Mbengue's level, who are more or less available every week than take the gamble on Lamptey who I feel like we could barely see all season.

I think this is a perfectly acceptable signing. The club are not dumb, they know the player has an injury record so I doubt they would have signed him on a multi year contract. I suspect Tariq wants to be close to his roots, he wants to use the club to put himself in the shop window, he's a Premier League player. It's the kind of move Raheem Sterling should be making, get your head down on a short term contract in the hope he can get a better contract elsewhere.

This to me is the key point. Can we manage his minutes successfully? There were signs of improvement last season when (and I can't believe I'm typing this) JCS didn't re-injure himself. But Burrell wasn't well managed resulting in the injury many of us were predicting. You could see a scenario where Mbengue would be selected to defend and Lamptey when we are looking to take the game to the opposition. Poku could similarly benefit from rotation: we have Vale and Smyth so really no excuse to overplay him. Better to get 20 effective, injury free games out of him than starting him every game and losing him from October.

The author Robert Marx is an American surgeon so the book has an American emphasis. Here are some details from the book:
'There are an estimated 41 million American kids playing competitive youth sports today, and estimates run as high as 200,000 ACL surgeries per year in the U.S. alone, a large percentage of which are being performed on the knees of prepubescent kids.' The worst affected U.S. sports are soccer and basketball. According to the author this is due to the increased intensity and frequency of youth sport.
There has been a very large increase in ACL injuries among women. 'Females are as much as six times more likely to tear their ACLs than their male counterparts in the high-risk sports.'
The two main causes are what the author calls 'cutting' (turning suddenly with one foot planted on the ground, with your weight on the planted foot) and jumping. An aggravating factor is having your knee bent inward (knock-kneed position).
Most ACL injuries (about 70 percent) occur in non-contact situations.
A significant part of the book is about the anatomy of the knee. I found it hard going as I didn't know my femur (thigh bone) from my tibia (shin bone). Basically, ligaments connect bone to bone, and the ACL connects the femur to the tibia.
ACLs are slow to heal because very little blood goes to the ACL, which is bathed in a fluid inside the knee. Most athletes can't return to their sport for at least six months. An ACL injury can't normally be operated on immediately after the injury - it normally takes a month for the swelling around the knee to subside. The ACL, which may be completely broken, is normally repaired/rebuilt with tissue from the injured patient's tendons.
It's also not simply bad luck to have more than one ACL injury. Having had a previous ACL tear is a risk factor for future ACL injuries: 'if you've torn your ACL before, you are at a higher risk of tearing it again, or of injuring the other knee.'
Prevention. Studies have been done in American and Norway on reducing the risk of ACL by using ACL prevention programs. These focus on strengthening the knee and teaching players not to bend their knees inward, and to keep their knee above their toe. For example see the walking lunges exercise at 1:20

Unfortunatly I lived through this with my daughter full ACL tear at 15 then next season her best ever scoring year followed by a disgusting tackle tackle on her repaired knee tearing the ACL, miniscus ,patella tendon etc ending her dreams and she sometimes limps today after climbing stairs or working out However she is a girl and 8 out of 10 players who tear ACLs are girls for a few major reasons. Look at Rodri who just picked Player Of The Tournament at the WC being back to his best and maybe playing better . I know it took almost a full year of being back playing and MANAGED carefully by Pep but it shows what advances in medicine has done. Watched Brighton lots of times on TV and when Lampety and Ferguson broke through together he was incredible and that was playing against the cream of the crop. That kid could be a star for us and really push us into the playoffs its an incredible signing IMO. Good luck Tariq

Well, perhaps read the posts properly rather than assume…
I think this is a good signing. The upside outweighs the downside for me, assuming he isn’t on a ridiculous wedge of salary or along term deal, but I doubt either of those are the case. It is a position we needed more strength. And if we can get him fit and consistently available, he could be a star at this level.
I do think a contract termination by mutual consent one year after signing for €6m is a tad odd, mind. Clubs rarely agree to that having spent €6m a year before. Hopefully nothing to it.
Ignore the faux outrage, Hunter. Most of know what you meant.
Hope that this works out for us, but it's a risk as you say. The plus sides seem to outweigh the potential downsides overall, at least i hope so.

One of those players that causes spatial discombobulation, like being on a stationary train when an adjacent train starts moving and for a second you're wondering why your train's reversing.
He was really good until it turned out that his hamstrings were made of dried spaghetti. The ACL won't be great either for a player who used to rely on explosive acceleration and rapid changes of direction.

Well the first thing is that it as indeed out of the blue and secondly, I had never heard of him until now as I don’t follow prem players unless there is an Irish connection or they are of the Halland mould. He certainly has (had) the ability to be a top player but just like Ferguson who emerged around the same time, he has been blighted by injuries over the past couple of seasons - Ferguson’s Italian trip didn’t go too well either. Potentially a great signing, but I’m with L Block on this one. A younger, more robust, perhaps less talented RB would be a better option, someone who COULD play 40 games if required - it’s not such a big ask,it just seems that way as we have so few that can actually achieve it. Anyway, he’s here now and I wish him every success. Like Brian says, ‘wait and see’.

Myke, are you sure that you're qualified to comment on Tariq Lamptey, when you state that you've never heard of him & only watch Irish players in The Premier? On that subject, if you watched Ferguson at Brighton, you would have seen Lamptey!
You are also making the assumption that he couldn't play 40 games a season based on his recent injuries. Perhaps he can't, but maybe, just maybe, he has now recovered & would be able to cope with that. After all, Vale looks as if he could & Field certainly could after their injuries.
Just on ability, he is probably the best footballer at Rangers in the past ten years, apart from Eze. And he is definitely not old!
