Additionally, I don’t see anyone in the academy in that right CB position ahead of him. So he’s literally next in line, and should be part of the production system. All the dev squad signings should have been out of loan learning their trade. If Smith for example had been loaned out last season, we’d know more. But now he’s already 21 and with not even a handful of senior appearances to his name. It’s a bodge job on the loan front. | | | |

I wouldn’t rely on trademarkt or other sites for height. They are almost always wrong, especially for young players who are still growing. I’ve seen Smith in person and he’s far taller than 6”. | | | |

From the times I’ve seen Wilkie last season he looks promising but as u say gets overlooked by some of our foreign imports , he’s an old school centre back and pretty decent on the ground as well |  |

Good post. Again we've got a supposed promising player get to 21 with zero experience. I can see it happening with a few more now. Sutton should be out on loan again. Pearman needs a loan desperately. Esq too. Us it seems Larakeche is now surplus. He's been with us for maybe 3 seasons and going nowhere. | | | |

I'm going to take a guess and say that Smith was never bought to be in the first team.
Nourry has said many times that if a player is not in the first team squad by 19/20 they will be moved on. Smith was bought at 20 yet had never played a senior game anywhere.
He was bought, get a couple of Championship games under his belt, get a international cap then flog him with a big % sell on clause just incase. Next!
In defence of the club regarding loans, if the players aren't great no one will take them. This season is different though: Bennie at Dundee U has been mentioned, but also Adjetey-Brew at 18yo gone to Worthing in NL. Played the full 90 at LB on Saturday in the first game of the season and they won 3-2 away at Carlusle.
Pearman might be going to Swindon, but he's already 20yo, so I imagine this loan will be used to increase his value for a summer sale next year. Get 30 starts in L2 and sell him to the MLS or something.
It's not just about getting players into our 1st team it's also maximising value for sales, something we have been awful at for decades. | |

Obviously not as easy in real life but I remember in some old Football Manager games you could pad out your reserve squad with cheap young players that were fairly easy to then sell after a year or two with sell on clauses to bolster your transfer funds for the main squad. |  | | |

Get your point here, but that's a bit like buying a selling cheap bits on ebay, where the return on total investment of each deal will be so low and so begs the question if that approach is really worth its time, to make just a few quid, I'd guess its not.
If we're taking a punt on the likes of Smith to see if they can flourish in 12 months great, if not quickly move them on before they become stale, fair enough, but as a strategy for making money, I don't see it. | | | |
