| "The Crab" 08:00 - Aug 27 with 5446 views | PatfromPoole | This is how a lot of Saints fans seem to be referring to Ward-Prowse. Basically always passing the ball sideways or backwards. Personally think this is harsh. In the later years of his Saints career, he was playing in poor sides in the Prem. Maybe the pass in between the lines to an attacking midfielder or to a striker just wasn’t on due to their lack of intelligent movement. Let’s face it, he had Mara up front in his last season at Saints, and I moved more in the stand than Sekou did on the pitch. It was only 5 years ago that Saints fans were up in arms that he wasn’t in the Euros squad for the Covid Euros in 2021. Fair enough, Southgate picked Kalvin Phillips, Declan Rice and Bellingham. Difficult to argue with that now. But it wasn’t just because of his set-pieces that we wanted him in the squad. He was all-action, and a leader. Not just passing the ball backwards all the time. He won’t be at that level now, but he has played pretty much his whole career in the Prem, and if we were looking at signing a different player with his number of Prem appearances, we would all be thinking “wow”. Depending on how much West Ham may try and fleece out of us, I am in favour. | |

We need pace going forward, not caps.

That said, I don’t think he’s what we need right now

| "The Crab" on 09:26 - Aug 27 with 3819 views | benalisbroom | Could work: He’s lost pace (never had much anyway). He should’ve been a No 10 early in his career but now needs to stop trying to be a box-to-box midfielder and sit deep. Those of us of a certain vintage will remember that Lawrie McMenemy did that with Jimmy Case in the 80’s and saved his career. He just sat in front of the CB’s and sprayed passes all over the pitch - it was quite something to see at times. With our wingers and DM upfront that could work well. | | | |
| "The Crab" on 09:43 - Aug 27 with 3775 views | franniesTache | He's a skate c*nt who's well past his best and nothing like the kind of player we need right now, he's too slow, has barely played recently and will force us back to death by passing. It's pure nostalgia signing, and like Romeo will be a massive failure and waste of money | | | |

Not 100% what we need BUT we do need some experience and leadership in the side and in the championship he may be a good addition [Post edited 27 Aug 10:36]

Theo Walcott had 47! When their careers are over, the caps from the past don't help much.

Im surprised at the vitriol directed at Ward Prowse, lets firstly get the facts right he was a model professional in his spell here and when he was about to leave, he didn't do it on the sly, he played in our opening game in the Championship and helped us win it. So lets look at the comments. 1. Maybe he was hugely overated by some, but 344 games in the Premier League over 11 season scoring 49 goals and God knows how many assists are impressive given that he played a few games at right back in them, not to mention most of these games were played at the time we were solidly mid table and above and reached a cup final, qualified for Europe plus a few semi finals, how did we do that with such a liability in the side. 2. Who says he is a Shea Charles replacement, he is able to play several positions, so on a free transfer which I am lead to believe it is, he will be an asset. 3. It is very likely it is at an advanced stage, the local media have been briefed on it. 4. Why is he a F****** Skate ****, if he is then so is Bobby Stokes and he doesn't get bad mouthed for being that. 5. He is only 31, his game never relied on having great pace, we need a leader and an experienced leader. 6. WE don't need someone to slow the game down etc etc until the moment we do when we are defending a goal leads in the final minutes of a game, who do you want coming on in the centre of the midfield in this situation Matsuki or JWP . I don't have a problem with people not rating James Ward Prowse, but lets give him the credit and for that matter the respect that he deserves

| "The Crab" on 11:04 - Aug 27 with 3562 views | Bridders2 | There was a short period when he was played further forward and he was effective, playing some nice short passes that lead to goals, but then returned to his deeper role. By the time we sold him to WH he was only Championship standard and now I'm not sure he has the pace or physique for this level. If it was Wanyama at a similar age I'd say yes. | |

He would probably be our highest wage earner. And if that were for somebody who may not necessarily start that many games, that could be a bit of an issue for squad harmony, I guess.

That is staggering TBF. However, Walcott got pretty much all his England caps at a time when we were in the doldrums under McLaren / Capello / Hodgson. We were that bad that Lallana was seen as one of our bright lights. Ward-Prowse typically had more competition to get a spot in our midfield in the Southgate era.

There were plenty of players in the Premier League who didn't score 9 goals and 4 assists as he did in his last season with us. In his first season with West Ham he scored 7 goals and 7 assists, in 37 Premier League games and also played in all 10 of their Europa League games as they got to the quarter finals I think it is unfair to say that when he left he was only Championship standard

He might well be our highest wage earner, but he is taking a big drop to come, lets say we pay him £50k a week, that is around £2.6 million a year, his market value is still around £5 million. So it would be good value for money all things taken into account for a player who after being bombed out by West ham due to the manager and having to twiddle his thumbs for 18 games, still manged to start in 12 Premier League games plus 6 off the bench

Highest wage earner ? Not unless we can dispense with the services of a certain three relegations with three different teams Mr Ramsdale.

And what did he do in those 13 EPL games? One assist. Lost 8. Won 1 (which he only played 7 minutes of). And its been 9 years, I think, since he played for England. Whilst I have no dispute that he did well for us, by whatever measure, there must be a reason why no EPL team has really fancied him for the last couple of years. When he should have been playing at his peak. And in the 23/24 season, he played as an AM predominantly. He could maybe slot in at CM and we are lacking a decent Defensive Midfielder with good passing range. Though the last thing that we need is a player more focused on his successful passing stats than creating chances, which I think may be the perception of many, in relation to JWP? We've already got many surplus players taking wages that make them hard to get off the books. Do we really need another one, who has no future sale value? I can see why its being considered as a short term option. Though like with Lallana and Romeu, we don't seem to get much playing benefit out of old players coming back for another roll of the dice

As far as i'm aware Bobby Stokes wasn't a pompey season ticket holder who called their fa cup win the best day of his life, was a mascot for them, and counted andy awford as his favourite player. I really don't understand why people seem to want to erase this because it doesn't fit the narrative, he's a skate c*nt, he was born there and supported them, and held a season ticket. If you're going to say he's not then no one is.
| "The Crab" on 13:00 - Aug 27 with 3294 views | Saintcole7 | What we don't see and know is the influence he could possibly have behind the scenes, from all accounts THB had a big influence towards the end of last season and though some might not like it I would say JWP classes as a club ledgened given his previous service and hopefully given the team from Tuesday night a big kick up the backside, also like it or not we have to trust in Tonda and Spors, only my opinion. | | | |
