| What do you think York fans are thinking? 18:54 - Apr 7 with 29451 views | frenzied | So for us the recent drop off in form and the consequential results achieved are disappointing. But for the York fans they must be happy to be 2 points ahead basically requiring 1 draw from their next 2 games and a win against Dale to win the league. However if it comes to that final game decider memories of last years failure in the play offs will certainly come to mind for them. Come April 25th momentum and everything else goes out of the window ..it’s who can deliver on that day over 90 Mins . | | | | |

| What do you think York fans are thinking? on 22:32 - Apr 8 by TVOS1907 | I don't know why, but the defeat at York in November is regularly omitted when looking back at previous results (and it was after the famous Brackley game). A draw that night would have given Dale an extra point and York two less, moving forward. Obviously, there's been plenty of water under the bridge since then and subsequent results may well have been different (Chaos Theory), but that result could turn out to be the most important of the previous 45 come 25th April. |
It wasn't a surprise to lose away at York and it wasn't self inflicted, in fact as a manager McNulty has lost on all four occassions he's faced them, very heavily usually. He needs to look at a different approach maybe for the last game of the season because how he sets us up in those games hasn't worked. If we engage them in a tactical game of football they run over the top of us and we concede a lot of goals. At least at York he fielded what looked like his strongest team this time, the season before he dropped Beckwith to the bench and that cost us in my opinion. He hasn't done that since To try to compare the defeat at York with that at Brackley is missing the point spectacularly but that's what you and others have been doing for most of the season in a effort to play down the events of that game, it's not chaos theory as you like to desribe it. McNulty's team selection against Brackley is as ludicrous today as it was then and trying to mention that defeat in the same breath as losing to York is pretty laughable to be honest. You think what you want but don't get annoyed with others because they wont stop mentioning the importance of the defeat to Brackley and the circumstances surrounding it. We'd just thrashed Gatrshead 4-0 and then he turns up at Brackley and he does that. It was damaging at the time and it's still damaging now. The worst single decision ever by a Rochdale manager i think, which can go alongside the record breaking points haul we've had this season also. The Brackley game was a isolated incident but if you're looking for a example of self harming you'll never find a better one in the history of football. If i owned the club at the time and invested all that money into signing Mani D etc, i'd have sacked him. Fortunately he's not repeated what he did at Brackley and has overseen a excellent season up to now and deserves a lot of credit for that. We need to step up now though and attack these final games. A neutral watching that game at Hartlepool wouldn't have thought that Rochdale were in a title fight and were desperatly trying to win the game. We've been poor for the last five or six weeks but have been missing key players, now most of them are back there's no excuse for poor results to continue. We're at the business end of the season and it's the manager and players job to get us over the line and put in performances. A repeat of last seasons end of season surrender in the big games isn't good enough, lessons should have been learned but watching the games against Morecambe and Hartlepool i'm getting a feeling of deju vu unfortunately and we now have better players. The league table doesn't tell lies, York and ourselves are the best two teams in this division, we've done the double over Carlisle, Forest Green and Boreham Wood. We need to start proving that on the pitch again and get some swagger and passion back into our play [Post edited 9 Apr 8:24]

Yes, last two seasons since the Ogdens became involved. We've lost all four games against York. The first season he won four out of six points so credit to Jim for that. We've won once against York in the last six games but that's not a big surprise when you look at their playing budget. [Post edited 9 Apr 8:51]

| What do you think York fans are thinking? on 08:48 - Apr 9 with 3734 views | James1980 | To answer the original question I think York fans will be going into these last three games believing they deserve to and will win the National League title. Our dip in form will only have added to the belief they that after 10ish seasons in the conference their team will finally be returning to the football league. | |

Not entirely, but i think a major part of JM bringing in Taylor and Done for this campaign was to try to overcome the deficits on display at those crunch times last season. It's certainly helped, but it's also why i say give them the team for these games, give them the talks The squad knows the system inside out, and it's worked for them. Nothing more that JM can add that he hasn't already, but that extra impetus is desperately needed now, an ability to start and more importantly stay on the front foot throughout. Given how vital these games are, none of the players need to be "saving" themselves, least of all Hendo and those returning to fitness who we've been missing Something needs to click against Wealdstone to get the confidence back. If not, i can see the crowd, who've been very patient with our style up till the Morecambe game, getting restless. Whilst that's something the players don't need, they're the ones who can do something about it [Post edited 9 Apr 9:51]

To give Taylor and Done the responsibility for the team and the team talks would be undermining the manager though, a manager who overall has done brilliant this season. Who did the team talks when we beat Carlisle, FGR, Southend, BW? There's a question mark for me hanging over McNulty and it's whether or not he can get his team over the line in the crunch games, he couldn't do it last season. This season he's been backed throughout by the Ogdens, even signing numerous players who we have barely seen. He's now got better players to work with and more choice and it's not being unreasonable to suggest that he should be leading from the front as manager and we should be seeing better performances than we've seen in the last three games at least. That's on the manager because that's where the buck stops in football, whether people like it or not. I didn't like the performance at Hartlepool or the managers interview, he seemed to value the clean sheet more than winning the game. I think the clean sheet was his priority before the game started rather than winning the three points. That's how it looked as a spectator and it that was the case then it explains how tentative the performance was, safety first. York did the opposite, peppered Altrincham for most of the game and scored a late winner, fortune favours the brave. We're a lot better than Wealdstone and Braintree, the league table reflects that, there's really no excuse for not going all out and winning both those games, not at this stage of the season. The York game is a 50/50 chance i think. If it's the Play Offs then the least we should do is win one game at home and get to Wembley. If we do that then we will have progressed since last seasons home play off defeat against Southend. None of that is expecting too much i don't think. [Post edited 9 Apr 10:24]

Plenty of shots - no need to take 3 additional passes when a clear view of goal. It’s crunch time now.. we are more than capable the vast majority of 43 league games so far has shown that. The players have it in there own hands to become legends.. do what no other Rochdale side has done before and finish top of a league table.

I really don't see it as undermining the manager, since it'd be his decision "Right lads, i've ingrained our system into the DNA and you know how it works. For the next couple of weeks, i want you to listen to what Jason and Matty have to say. You've already heard them in training, and i trust them, while i remain in charge of selection and taking an overview" That's authoritative, inclusive and confident Anyone who's witnessed something like that in their own workplace will know what i mean [Post edited 9 Apr 11:42]

I understand your reasoning, a different voice etc, but at the critical part of the season i can't imagine any manager worth their salt agreeing to that. McNulty needs to draw on the experience of last season and what happened in the games against Spennymoor and Southend, so do the players. He did a couple of interviews following those games and looked a broken man, we should have won both but we didn't. If he's a intelligent man, i think that he is, he will sit in a room with Taylor, Done, Lillis, Hendo and have a gloves off honesty session about what's gone wrong recently and what's needed to change our fortunes. Rinse and repeat of what we are seeing isn't going to work, it certainly wont against York. Get some pace and tempo in our game and give the players their head. Play in our opponents half, it's the best form of defence. We also need another keeper on the bench, irrespective of what the manager says.

They are certainly not passive spectators to be wheeled out on special occasions. They are every much part of McNulty’s collaborative environment.

It's not a case of "wheeling them out", but one of providing them with even greater prominence, as i alluded to TS hopes he's learned from the end of last season. I'm suggesting something different, rather than hoping. You know as well as i do that something needs to change over the next fortnight or so. In effect, it doesn't matter what that is, as long as it's recognised and it's happening I understand your need to be seen to be supportive, but right now, initiative is needed, not just supporting the same old and hoping for the best And yes, we all know it's the "same old" that got us here.in the first place. It can't be a change of system - that's too ingrained. The tweak needs to come from elsewhere, and as you say, Taylor and Done are in a great.position to deliver on that [Post edited 9 Apr 13:08]

I don’t need to be seen to be supportive - I am supportive, and have been throughout McNulty’s tenure. I’m not chopping and changing my view in a reactionary fashion based on a few results. I was simply outlining what I understand to be the reality in the dressing room, which makes perfect sense when you think about it - it’s hardly revolutionary. Yes, the last few performances have been below par and need to improve over the next (hopefully final) three games, but that’s on the players as much as the coaching staff.

Corect, it is on the players also. It also needs to be remembered that International call ups and injuries have impacted us over the last month or so. Hopefully now we have players returning that will lift performances. I've never been fully on board with McNulty's style of football as you probably know, there are elements of it that bore me to tears and i think it's anti football. However, nobody can deny that it's been very effective in respect of winning games, so the proof is in the pudding. I do think the better, fitter teams have us sussed out though, the light bulb moment was at Accrington when we played Hartlepool. Any team that puts a high press on us and denies us time on the ball will have joy against us. The poorer/part time teams can't sustain the levels of energy needed to do it so they sit deep in a low block and invariably we beat them. Then we have Mani D, teams have doubled or even trebbled up on him now and he's struggling to have the same impact. So it's not just the manager its a combination of factors which the manager, coaches and players need to find a answer to. York fans think they won the league before a ball was kicked, they're still thinking that. [Post edited 9 Apr 13:54]

Neither am i inclined to change my view, which i made plain at the start of the season and won't repeat here As a campaign, it's been tremendous. It can't just be "down to the players" to change something they're now struggling with, which is the very natural nerves of being under great pressure A simple message can be put across, for example: shoot more often rather than seeking the perfect ball into feet. If JM's been saying the opposite all season, it's better coming from one of the others in the coaching team It's really no more complicated than that. You seem to be suggesting i'm being reactionary, then suggest the players need to somehow be reactionary too, i.e. step up. It's clear as daylight they need a nudge in the right direction, setting free when in a good position without fear of falling foul of "the system"

I said it has to be the players AS WELL AS the coaches who deliver the required upswing in performances, not JUST the coaches. And it’s not just down to shooting more often, it’s about cutting out the mistakes defensively that have cost us - or almost cost us - recently, too. That happens once the players are out on the pitch. Lots of people have been reactionary during McNulty’s tenure, not just you. Being supportive doesn’t mean being uncritical. I’ve had plenty of criticisms during McNulty’s tenure and haven’t shied away from them. Support, for me, is about believing that, overall, his approach is the right one for the club - and that it’s an evolutionary process, not something judged week to week. Others disagree and that’s fine. I also think York have the stronger squad on paper, and there are areas where we’re light - Duku being the only real like-for-like option for Mani D is an obvious one. It doesn’t mean we can’t outperform them over the next three games though. As you say, it’s not complicated. It doesn’t need different folk in the dressing room giving the message.

At the risk of repeating myself... i'm far from being reactionary, i've been consistent. My take at the start of the season (which i didn't elucidate earlier} was that whilst JM would likely prove to be the right man for the club along with the strengthening of the coaching team, when push came to shove he hadn't demonstrated the skillset that would get us over the line in a tense finish. This is hardly original, and it therefore can't be anything like reactionary to suggest that's how things look to be playing out. I really hope i'm wrong of course, but suspect for us to take that extra step then greater prominence should be given to why he thought bringing in Taylor and Done was required It can't be argued both that those two have made a difference and that the difference shouldn't be emphasised in our approach right now. That, in essence, is what i'm saying. It's as logical and consistent as you believe your approach is [Post edited 9 Apr 17:06]

Probably that they didn’t expect to have gone through the same battle they had last season. Whoever wins this race will deserve it. Whoever finishes second should be proud of their efforts and hope they can recover from the disappointment and do well in the playoffs. At this stage, I think York fans are probably more fearful of that. But who knows, assuming what might or might not be happening is without much substance.

Obviously any helping hand from Tamworth or Yeovil would be most welcome!! Come on Dale tomorrow - should be another big crowd on hopefully we all leave entertained.

Have we ever won the last 3 games of a season I wonder? This is a record breaking season so there's no reason to doubt we can do it.

Never done it before! The closest we've come in more 'recent' times was in 2006/07, when we finished with wins at Mansfield and at home to Macclesfield & Hartlepool, followed by a final day draw at Peterborough. But as you say, this team has broken a lot of records this season, so hopefully there's time for at least one more.
