I hope that we are going all out in trying to entice him?? He is available and a standout candidate. Would be funny if we upgraded with him and Stockport downgraded with Jim though.

We’d have to pay Challinor at least a similar amount as he was on at Stockport. He was also linked with Blackburn before they appointed Mowbray and Sheff Wed as well. If he was to drop back to L2, Rotherham may be a possible destination.

Unlikely at best.

But good to know McNulty has already been ranked below him as a Stockport manager. That after finally creeping above Alan Buckley in our list. Poor bloke.

Erm.......I apologised to Jim and ranked him above Buckley and Simpson afterwards.

Jim might have made the wrong decision himself here but nobody is perfect are they?

Imagine if he’d stayed, could have set his sights on moving past Eyre and Stockdale.

I agree though, think it could be a move that doesn’t work out. If nothing else though, he’s that resilient and good at proving people wrong that it could see his stock rise even further.

Possibly ahead of Asa Hartford even.

The irony would be delicious, wouldn't it

Challinor took Stockport out of the NL and to a higher finish in the EFL than any Dale manager has achieved, albeit on a higher budget

Whatever the outcome of our recruitment, the JM saga will run and run

There is no need to be like that!

I apologised to Jim as he did the job and got us over the line.

I still rank him below Parkin and Dolan.

Really? Whilst Dolan lifted us to a top half finish in Division Four, McNulty won us a promotion and the club's first silverware. I am open to being in agreement with Parkin though.

It's all unrankable if there is such a word.

Len Richley (1) and Keith Hill (2) won us promotions within the football league.

Jim McNulty got us promotion from non-league, albeit in a spectacular manner.

Parkin got close and left a brilliant team behind.

Jim certainly rose from a sackable position to eventual promotion with brilliant backing from the board.

Hill went from genius with a 5 year contract to incompetent and had to be sacked when he was sacked.

There are no calculus available to prove who ranks higher. Only opinion.

I trust our current owners to make the best appointment. Hope it's not Robinson. If it is and he succeeds, I'll join the ranks of many Dale fans proven wrong. Not for the first time!

"And only as far as Casey Pettit......"

You rank JM below Terry Dolan? He got us to our first ever FA Cup 5th round, and a comfortable 4th tier finish, absolutely nothing down on JM’s achievement, to think otherwise is delusional.

I'm sorry but if the board are prepared to spend the money to attract someone like Challinor then wouldn't they have spent the money to retain Jim?

I'd put McNulty only second behind Hill when it comes to achievements at the club. He took the job when the club was at it's lowest ebb ever, that first season he steadied a sinking ship. He's improved year on year and returned us to the EFL far quicker than most of us would have predicted. The Ogdens coming on board made that a bit easier obviously. To escape the National League after only three season takes some doing and full credit needs to be given to Jim because of it. The icing on the cake is winning promotion at Wembley and lifting silverware, no manager has ever done that.
I'm not too upset that he's moved on because as last season progressed our performances regressed, which gave me concerns for the upcoming season. Could he rejuvenate the squad again and get them playing to a even higher standard? We'll never know the answer to that now. McNulty gave us our best ever day watching the Dale win at Wembley, he'll always be remembered for that and returning us to the Rochdale League

Money is always a factor I think James but I think the attraction of challenging yourself at a much higher level is the main pull for Jim.

I’m just hoping he hasn’t bit off more than he can chew..it’s a brutal game at management level

I think Jim had took us to the highest level he could with that squad ,hence I was pleased when the retain and release list came through.

No clear indication as to the futures of his back room staff as yet…maybe they will appoint from within..need some shrewd choices in terms of bringing new players in to enable us to compete in league 2.

Just on another point ..my old neighbours are all season ticket holders at County generally very level headed..they will back Jim of course but are all somewhat bemused by the clubs decision to appoint him.

Maybe Jim wanted to leave?

Beneath all the platitudes and badge kissing at the end of the day managers and players are probably always looking for the next (likely better paid) challenge and they can't really be blamed for that.

Yes i agreed with the retain and release list. I would have perhaps kept Barlow. I think all the retained players can do a job next season, either as starters in the team or squad players. We do need more quality for virtually every position though i think and the sooner we get the new manager in place the better. Hopefully in the next few days. I don't think we have any players currently who can improve Stockport if their aim is better the last two seasons so i'm not bothered about McNulty trying to cherry pick our players. I think some of Stockports backroom staff have now left. Plenty going on at the Dale and the World Cup starting this week, the football close season is now over for me.

I did want Jim to lead us into League2 next season, there was a feel good factor about the club and town and I wanted that to continue.

My original point was that I feel Challinor would be an upgrade on Jim and with Robinson available too there are two outstanding candidates out there for us to approach imo.

I really thought he would have wanted to see how far he could take Dale. We have the training ground in the pipeline. The academy is being revived. He had a squad who would run through walls for him and a generally very supportive and supportive fanbase.

I think Challinor is miles out of our reach. He's reportedly now taking a break but his next move will probably be to a bigger club than Stockport. There's a bit of a sideshow with Robinson but apparently he was well liked at Salford by the club and their fans. He does get results at this level and as we know that trumps other perceived negatives. A manager with a personality who can oversee the new training ground, academy and buy into the long term aims of the club would be great.

The other argument is by moving up a level it progresses his career faster. This time next year he could be managing a Championship side and even if he’s not it’s raising the profile at a bigger club. Of course it could go wrong, but if it does he’ll be a target back in L2.

The comment in Jim's letter about 'this isn't goodbye forever just the closing of a chapter' i find a bit presumptious. If you're wife suddenly tells you that she's leaving you for a wealthier man but suggested at some stage she will be back, you'd tell her to foxtrot oscar. I think Jim will find long term employment but not at Stockport, i see him having a good job as coach or academy manager at a pretty high profile club.

He’s never coached at academy level, not to say he won’t of course. But his methods and way of working is all around senior football - having the ability to create a culture around his own philosophy. Working in an academy is following the culture created further up.

Yeah, he’s obviously pleased to be at Edgeley Park now. The way he spoke about his time there as a player indicates he doesn’t forget times at clubs he’s found enjoyable.
