Reading in the paper this morning that Ray Wilkins had a cardiac arrest that led to a fall which meant he's had to be put into an induced coma. No sort of an age these days - 61.
"It's very, very bad. He is not in a good state at all I'm afraid, he's critically ill" his wife Jackie said.
Fingers crossed he somehow finds a way to pull through.
One of my favourite players from my childhood and, referring back to episodes of The Big Match Revisited I mentioned the other week, someone who stood out as a class player in Chelsea sides of the late-1970s.
Sad news.
When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

Indeed. Capped 84 times, captained England 10 times, spells at Chelsea, Utd, AC Milan, Rangers and QPR. Picture of him in the paper in his England strip, ball at his feet but looking for a pass. Always seemed to be trying to supress a smile and always seemed very genuine.
He'd have been keeping himself reasonably fit, one would assume, and goes to show how much a part genetics plays in determining whether we succumb to certain illnesses and at what age. I wonder about his family history?
The head injury sounds just as serious. Best of luck to him, a genuine role model during his career

I thought the same. The article states "more recently, despite poor health" (he continued media work). Not sure what the ill-health was - not necessarily lack of fitness.
I remember seeing him as a young lad playing for Chelsea. He was a real box to box player that could play all over the pitch then. As the years went by he became more static and less likely to go forward but he was still a really good passer of the ball.
Wishing him a speedy recovery..I remember going down to the Cliff training ground to get autographs from my Man Utd heroes...Ray spent endless time with all the fans signing, posing for photos..long before camera phones!!..a real gentleman ..a terrific goal in the Brighton fa cup final as well

Forgot about that!

The "poor health" may refer to periods were alleged "over indulgence" in liquid intake have been rumoured
Not a bad player in his early days.. But as he hit the heights he joined the booze boys as many did in those days... People respect him as a decent coach..
Hope he pulls through.....
My all time favourite Dale player Mr Lyndon Symmonds

Also got Ulcerative Colitis. Nearly had to have his Colon removed. Welcome to the Colitis/Crohns club.
Yes I know - but I'm sure any mention of recent ill health would be referring to his bypass surgery and not him getting pissed.
Alcoholism like any addiction is a disease that some people are prone to, it isn’t a case of going out on a bender. People are pointing his alcoholism out as a contributing factor towards his heart disease, not having a pop at him.

Nobody on here knows if his alcohol problems had any bearing on his heart bypass or subsequent heart attack? It might be hereditary. The post I replied to implied that his recent ill health 'may refer to periods were alleged "over indulgence" in liquid intake have been rumoured'. All I stated was it most probably was referring to his recent heart surgery? What do you think? Do you think the "ill health' mentioned was 'alcoholism' or his operation?

Maybe we can all email his heart specialist and find out. I'm sure his battle with the bottle won't have helped

Sorry whilst being aware of his "drink issue" ,I was not aware of other medical problems he has been suffering from and whilst I am sure his drinking didn't help his situation perhaps the other conditions have more bearing on the very precarious position he is sadly in at this moment in time. All one can do is to wish him all the very best and hope he pulls through and goes on to enjoy his life

Fook knows, I’m not a doctor, I’m not that arsed and I don’t know everything like some on here. I do however know if your on the peeve every day like most alcoholics are it’s not going to be good for the ticker.

Alcohol most certainly damages the heart. For a start, excessive alcohol consumption is a leading cause of arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats), and they in turn dramatically increase your chances of either a cardiac arrest or heart attack, especially if they’re not well controlled (many people have an irregular heartbeat without realising - everybody check your pulse regularly please!).
In the link you posted he said he had a bypass on 2 of his coronary arteries. You only have 4 so he must have been in a bad way to begin with. Bypass surgery is literally as it sounds - a segment of the artery is so blocked with plaque that bloodflow is severely reduced, so a blood vessel from elsewhere in your body (usually your leg!) is attached, literally acting like a diversion around some roadworks. In theory you can go on to make a complete recovery after this and live a healthy and active life. The problem is that to get such blockages in the first place usually means your lifestyle isn’t great, and if that lifestyle continues after the bypass then the same thing will happen.
Also it’s been mentioned on here in different posts that he had a cardiac arrest and a heart attack. I haven’t read which one he had but they’re different things, the first possessing significantly more gravity than the second.
Don’t drink, do drugs or indulge in fast food and chem sex. The problem is once you take them four outta the equation there’s not much else worth doing.

Everything in moderation! The problem is excessive anything!
awful news and I wish him a speedy recovery. Just had. friend end up a paraplegic after falling out of bed and breaking his neck. He was in early stages of dementia.
My recollection of Wilkins the player was he would have been good for hornets cos he never made a forward pass.

Great knowledge - never knew that about cardiac arrest/heart attack. Hope he recovers but it doesn't sound too promising.
