A League 2 club have been sniffing round ian watson and made an approach to south Shields. Has a decent reputation, and team play passing footy looking at you tube and season reports

Southend are rumoured to be appointing Keiron Dyer as their new manager - if true a really odd appointment …….
Probably he has been appointed on the strength of several years coaching at EFL level. Certainly more experience of EFL than some of the apparent candidates for the job at Dale, but only time will tell which plan worked the best

From what can be gleaned online about his coaching career to date, it'd seem he's at the start of an upward trajectory. Dale could be an ideal stepping stone for him, and for us

I thought Peter Wild would do a job but his support of Oldham compromises him and us a bit, i know we should all look beyond that but it's always there like a running sore. They wouldn't want a Dale fan in their dugout.
Karl Robinson, i think he has a lot of qualities that would help us in EFL2 but there's a sideshow with him and he can be a bit of a loose cannon. I don't think our owners and Directors have the capacity or time to deal with with stuff like that. In hindsight, i'd rather not bother unless there is very little else on offer.

I've watched the You Tube highlights of goals scored at South Shields and it's a version of McNulty play but at a much quicker tempo and with a emphasis on putting the opponents under pressure at every opportunity and keeping that pressure on, that's how i interpret it anyway. I'd be a fully paid up member of Ian Watson's barmy army if he's appointed. Hopefully it's all elementary today and Watson arrives on the scene.

Not subscribed to the Pete Wild hopes, too much of a journey man, and, as much of a decent chap he appears to be, I see him regularly coaching his sons team on a Sunday morning, I feel we need someone at the start of their career wanting to prove themselves, and with a bit of fire in their belly. Not sure PW would have that as much. And Karl Robinson would not fit in well at all, he has not got the personally to bond a dressing room, and I feel the bond JM created, won us many points last season. From what I’ve read and heard about Ian Watson, I feel he’s the perfect candidate, very pleased with this if it happens, which it appears it will/has.

Yes any manager is a risk but surely there’s less risk with a manager who knows the EFL well. The only manager I can find who made a similar jump was Mark Molesley who managed Weymouth in the NLS - got them promoted through the play offs in 2020 then moved immediately to Southend in L2. Southend were a bit of a basket case at the time - transfer embargoes etc - but nonetheless he left after 7 months with Southend in 23rd place (and subsequent were relegated). You have to ask if this is such a good idea how come so few other teams have made this gamble??

Can't even remotely compare the two cases in my opinion. We have a settled 1st XI, riding a wave having achieved 106 points, with a club and ownership running really smoothly so any manager should be able to come in and hit the ground running

I will of course back the guy if he comes in but I am also skeptical and feel like we would have benefitted more from an experienced, safe pair of hands in the position we find ourselves in.
That being said, I trust the board have done their due diligence and I am more than happy for them to prove me wrong

Has he any less experienced than Jim McNulty when he took over?
Think he has a reputation as an ambitious up coming coach. Seems to be cut from the same cloth as McNulty. Plays a similar style but with a bit more tempo. Also seems to be a players coach so shouldn't upset the balance in dressing room too much. That would have been my fear with someone like Robinson.
Any manager is a gamble but I am cautiously optimistic with Watson

He does have the L2 experience of helping guide MK Dons from 18th to a playoff place, albeit as assistant manager, and has since established his credentials in a no.1 role
Little teaser post on the club's social media of green shoots (or maybe I'm reading too much into that) - I feel pretty much the same about Watson as I did when Whatmuff signed. Maybe a bit of risk but more than offset by the potential very high ceiling. If MRKT continue to be behind much of our recent recruitment they're becoming some asset.

It's hardly unknown territory
Certainly would not be disappointed by this appointment as others have suggested. The bit that’s playing on my mind is not so much the manager, as the team. We need a good few upgrades with plenty of holes in the current squad (mentioned elsewhere) and I’m not sure if an untested manager from the lower leagues has the draw card. Of course I hope I’m absolutely proven wrong AGAIN and we scoop a few diamond youngsters like we did this year. We all know that league 2 is a completely different beast and looking at what some of the established sides are already signing, this league is certainly stronger on paper this year than last year. Hope things are sorted and settle quickly so we can continue the amazing work that has been done so far

Not without risk but surely every appointment is. I would imagine questions were asked regarding how they step up two divisions, and whoever's involved in the interview process happy with the answer. There's an abundance of managers out there we've clearly made a move for someone who fits the profile from further away than the M62.
Key difference here is player recruitment, whoever comes in has a solid core capable squad and then a relative blank canvas and solid budget to make moves in the transfer market and set up their style of play. Imagine the difficult job if Jim had signed everyone up for another year then jumped ship?
This could be an exciting pre-season (again) as we see the real start of the new era.
No real expectations going into next season just yet but anyone who comes in wanting to play fast gets a thumbs up from me. That could get Spotland rocking early in the season.

Sounds an interesting option, and the local SS paper is reporting both he and his assistant will definitely be leaving.
The experienced old head option didn't work with Coleman or Bentley, so someone who isn't quite as green as Stockdale and BBM sounds exciting and should be a smooth transition given his passing based approach. Hopefully there will be some low hanging fruit from NLN that can step up to L2 and can join the project. You'd think that would definitely be achievable from a budget perspective.

Jason and Matty will have massive intelligence on the team and I would love for them to stay at the COA......they would be invaluable to any new manager.

If it should be Watson my concern would be recruitment. We would need to lean into the Consultancy substantially. Watson, will not have formed an opinion on any player who can improve us. He simply wouldn’t have had the time or the backing to bring L1/2 ready players to South Shields. Basically his eye is not in at this level. Also I think it is important that at least one of Done or Taylor stay to ease the new manager and existing squad together. Interesting times.

Nothing has been said but i would be surprised if Taylor and Done don't follow Big Jim to Stockport.
Ian Watson & Carl Magnay does look like it is happening via North East reports.
Nothing confirmed of course so we need to be patient until compensation is agreed and new contracts signed.
Of all the names mentioned this is the one that excites me the most.

Watson has spent time in the EFL with MK Dons and Carlisle whilst Magnay looks to have connections too. Anyone with a LinkedIn account should take a look at their profiles. There are a couple of great videos and some interesting stats. The footballing philosophy seems very similar to that of McNulty.
