You're right and if everybody keeps banging the drum that's the direction we are heading in. The interest around the Town for the football Club has never been higher, it used to be the butt of jokes but now it's actual pride they express when people mention the Dale.
Last seasons run in captured the imagination, the pubs in the Town were buzzing both before and after the games. The Moody Blue is a proper football pub, full of Dale related photos etc, smack bang in the middle of Town. Hogarths, also advertising and showing live Dale games, the Flying Horse etc. How much would it cost the Club to give each pub in the Town centre Dale related merchandise, a shirt etc to display behind the bar? It gets everybody talking about the club and instills a community feel and sense of pride. A successful football club also generates a lot of money for local businesses on matchdays.
It sounds like we've sold nearly 1000 more season tickets than last season, suddenly project 5000 within the next two or three years is becoming more than just a pipedream and young children are just as likely to be seen wearing Dale shirts than United or City. A high profile cup game this season would help to keep the momentum going. Things are happening and the Town is waking up. [Post edited 5 Aug 7:21]

Exactly. Give me Rochdale any day, full of real life people warts and all. I'd rather be in Rochdale on a rainy day than some sort of sanitised utopia full of ex pats. You can tell the Ogdens have Rochdale blood in them, they're comfortable in the company of the people from the Town and vise versa. Would they feel phased drinking in the pubs around the Town? No, they'd fit right in and be accepted straight away. I've only spoken to Sir Peter, Cameron and his brother once and straight away i knew they were the same as us, very down to earth. My dad moved from Castleton to Southend to try and avoid National Service (it didn’t work by the way), so that tells you how long ago that was. The most enjoyable Xmas present I ever got him was a subscription to the Rochdale Observer, it kept him connected and reflected his pride in his roots.

Seeing Rochdale bloom is amazing. After years of bad publicity, grooming, poverty and crime, to see Rochdale as the historical picture of growth again is heartwarming. The artwork, flower blooms and general kindness of Rochdale has grown substantially. The Ogden family and everything associated with Rochdale football club have all contributed to this major upturn and long may it continue.
One thing that I’m struggling to comprehend is the decline of the church. Not so much the religion but the historical value of the amazing buildings we have in Rochdale. Religion is what it is and I don’t expect everyone to be at church every Sunday, but some of the most iconic and historic masterpieces of Rochdale history have fallen into demise. Schools could be again involved, community events, different commercial ventures, anything to preserve these building from overgrown decay.

Agree.....it always amazes me how loyal the locals are in Burnley, a town smaller than Rochdale with, what is by our standards a super stadium. Perhaps it's because Turf Moor is walking distance to the town centre. But a town that named a local pub after Sean Dyche and has the Club 'colours' evident throughout the town.
At the back end of the season I was stuck in traffic in Burnley at 1700hrs just as a game had finished, gridlocked !......even though they were already relegated I checked the att when I got home: 21000.

Burnley has a deep history of success, and stories of that success are passed down through the generations. There are a number of clubs like that ...great teams in the 50s and 60s hard times in the 70s and 80s and 90s but with large, hard cores of support. I went to Burnley several times with my Dad as a kid, usually when Dale were playing away..I remember being taken to see them play Blackpool when Stanley Matthews was supposed to be playing, he didn't turn out, he rarely did in those days, but his name on the teamsheet was worth 1000s on the gate...We also went to watch Burnley v Leyton Orient in the F A cup .. in fact we went twice because the first attempt to play it was fogged off ....1962....the Year they got to the Final and lost 3-1 to Spurs. There was a lot of fog in those days.. our League Cup semi-final at Blackburn was fogged off on the first attempt and replayed the night after.. we went all the way on a double deckker bus from outside the Post Office in the Town Centre .. twice! |  | | |

Burnley also has the history of being a top flight club in the 50s/60s and playing in Europe in front of EllDale, which would have attracted a lot of fans from the aforementioned catchment areas, who subsequently stuck by the club in later years, along with their offspring. |  |

We've needed an initiative like this from a genuine backer for years.
That the town doesn't regularly support the club as other places (apart from "big games") mentioned by R17ALE maybe down to RAFC's many past failures. With the Ogden's on board, now is the time to reverse that trend with renewed vigour.
It's great to see the number of teens / early twenties fans in our fanbase, home and away, of late. Something is working. They are the ones who need to be encouraged to become the die hard regulars of the future. Passing the baton on to their children when the time comes. The free season ticket for accompanied juniors is an initiative in the same vein.
Us oldies who are still around after decades should be absolutely encouraging these new developments, to ensure there is an RAFC for generations to come long after we've gone.

Great post. I am an exile who comes back for our home games. Reading social media for Rochdale is quite depressing at times; so negative and often running down the town. Yet I take great pleasure in visiting, seeing the regeneration, the town in bloom, the magnificent town hall, the great pubs and food places. And of course our beloved club. If only the townsfolk on social media could actually see the positives.
Rochdale is just like any other large town post industrialisation trying to find its place in a new world. The vision the Ogden family have for the town, not just the club, has to be applauded. Everyone deserves an equal opportunity to shine and thrive. The Ogden family have done more to create a vision than the council ever has. Getting good people all pulling in the right direction is the way forward and building widespread community pride through the football club makes me smile. | | | |
