I’m not really a big fan of opera but this gets me every time. My late father used to play the Joan Sutherland version of this and it reminds me of him. O Mio Babbino Caro

I’m not sure if this is the sort of thing you’re after, Dicky, but I heard this version of The Rising of the Lark as I was driving a few days ago and my mind started to drift away, I was twenty again and all I could smell was Kiwi boot polish and Blanco...

So many that remind me of certain events in life, some happy/some sad. I can't do links but a few of the top of my head-
Slade-Everyday. Ystrad Rhondda Boys Club discos, tapping the girls for a smooch. The Damned-New Rose. Hearing this on John Peel when I was 14, and just thinking wow, what is this wonderful new music. The Saints-This Perfect Day. I used to follow my brothers band Mad Dog everywhere between 1977 and 1979, they used to cover this magnificent tune. Takes me back to teenage bunk ups, fights, Pogoing, and basically being a youth without a care in the world. Conflict-To Be Continued...my funeral song, hopefully a long way away yet!
All these and more bring a tear to my eye.

Your ears must have taken the same sort of beating over the years that Ali took in his last couple of fights.

Tori Amos did what I think were amazing versions of both enjoy the silence and rattlesnakes Dicky. The first of those with real emotion. Worth a listen if you love those songs as I do.
Her ‘winter’ always breaks my heart too, as does soft cell’s say hello wave goodbye which reminds me of my mother’s death. Yeah, I don’t play it much...but if I want a good weep...
Waterloo sunset and witchita lineman cheer me up as does Uma Thurman dancing in pulp fiction to ‘girl, you’ll be a woman soon’
For real happiness it’s Beethoven, Bach or Vivaldi for me.

Doesn't really matter. Akala's music is about history, society and life. He's not merely a rapper, but a journalist, author and activist. He received an honorary doctorate, and speaks and lectures at universities all round the world. His music hits hard. Gritty and true to life in today's world.
