Killy if you’re looking for a Welshman who laid the actual foundations for the creation of the welfare state you need to put your focus on the achievements of Lloyd George and his 1911 Budget.

Then the next time you’re in town and walking through the Picton Arcade, passing by Picton Yard or traipsing down Picton Terrace stop for a moment and let the name sink in...

Brilliant

True enough.

Evans is probably the only real Welsh one on that list, and considering he's a Tory, I found him to be likeable enough.

Many years ago, when I lived in Townhill, I used to roll up to his newsagents at Pen-Y-Graig roundabout on a Sunday morning to pick up The Observer, and, despite me buying what he might have considered a Liberal-Leftie rag, he was always immaculately polite and cheerful.

On the other hand, he might just have fancied me 😯

Sir Thomas Picton would have disagreed, Killy, and he was ten times the man Bevan ever was.

Have just read simon scarrow 4 book series on napoleon and Wellington. Thomas Picton was the highest ranking officer killed at Waterloo

Yes he was. He was also a sitting member of Parliament at the time of Waterloo. Could you imagine Chris Grayling leading a desperate bayonet charge?

Have you read Bernard Cornwell’s ‘Sharpe’ books? Most of them have the Peninsular War as the backdrop and Picton gets a regular mention. Absolutely brilliant pot-boilers they are, all of them. A wild ride from start to finish. They’d make for tremendous company during this lockdown.

You stay safe too, mate. All of you boys and girls on here.

Both are hardly comparable anyway.

Picton gave his life leading from the front at one of the great turning points in European history and helped save these islands from a tyrant.

Bevan walked away from his post in a huff squabbling about dentures.

I’m not disparaging Picton, just your complete indifference to a man who helped millions and millions of British subjects. Now THERE’S a patriot.

Why do people persist with the myth of Bevan as ‘creator’ of the welfare state? You must know that all of the groundwork, all of the heavy lifting, was done by others. Not all of them Labour politicians either, not by a long chalk.

Bevan never made this ‘father of’ claim himself, this is just an epithet that seems to have evolved slowly in the decades since the war and taken hold.

Lloyd George started it all off thirty odd years previously.

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

Aye, remember that this name is associated with a man who authorised the torture of a 14 year old girl, amongst others. Not someone I would call a hero.
