Lack of testing is due to not enough demand. Is the guy deluded ?

Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

There were 3 doctors on GMB this morning and all 3 disagreed on mask wearing. The piece said that if you take an old t shirt and make a mask of 2 layers it will stop 95% of the virus getting out and Hilary Jones didn't think that was good enough because that 5% will still infect people.
Seems to me stopping 95% of a cough or sneeze is far better than doing nothing.

If 2 ppl wear masks, and keep that air space between them it will give 100% protection

Question, then why do thise testing for the virus , and the stewards wear them? before anyone says they are testing people who are more prone to having the virus......I could be standing next to someone in the street who may also have it........just a thought

Presumably then, if you're wearing a mask and someone infected coughs near you, the mask reduces your chances of infection by 95%? And he reckons that it's not worth doing because you still have a 5% chance of becoming infected? That sounds fecking nuts to me. Since lockdown started, I've worn an FFP3 standard mask (Google it) every time I go into a shop or anywhere busy and I feel much safer doing so.

They are just trying to protect the supply chain.

60 million people all wanting masks at once is clearly unhelpful.

Some are obviously convinced. A bloke in the Tesco queue said to me that "masks don't help you know? " I said "OK, tell me why you think all the nurses & doctors you see every evening on the news are all wearing them and are desperate for more?" He didn't answer.

“ I feel much safer doing so.”

That, of course, is the main argument against them as I understand it.

It's like the process of double glazing. two ppl will wear masks, one coughs, the 2 layers and gap in between with stop the velocity of anything going from one person to another

I also have a reusable FFP3 mask but for it to be effective you need to protect your eyes and face too.
Not that it matters in my case, I'm not allowed near a shop since I got my 'shielding' letter.

That Dr Hilary was also on about a false sense of security but is the answer to say there's no evidence masks help or to tell people wearing a mask might help but only if you maintain social distancing and regular hand washing?

Home made masks won't stop you catching the virus but if we all wore them if seems logical that if 95% of the virus wasn't escaping into the atmosphere around you, there's less chance of catching it.

Isn't education and information better than denial?

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Why? If I'm infected and I cough, 95% stays in the mask so it's safer for others, not just me.

Yes, I feel safer, but I still keep my 2m distance and hand wash, and I'm still shitting myself when I go into a supermarket where most people don't seem too bothered. Feeling safer does not mean overconfident or complacent. If didn't have that safer feeling, I wouldn't go there at all. I just wish every other fu cker took it as seriously.

They’re not the magic bullet but probably not a bad thing. Will be compulsory where I live in Germany from next Monday. I do get the feeling that people feel safer wearing them which could be a negative as social distancing is more likely to be ignored. People are taking them on and off when walking into and out of shops too, after not having washed their hands. On the plus side as the lockdown is relaxed it still keeps people aware that we’re not out of the woods yet.

Not knocking what you’re doing. I would have thought every little helps, as they say.

I was just pointing out that they are concerned (or so I’ve read) about people feeling safer than they want people to feel. I think that the greatest weapon they have in stopping it spreading is to want the majority of us to feel frightened for our health. It makes us far more careful.

Certainly agree with your penultimate sentence. Fear is a huge motivation in any set of circumstances but particularly this one. My biggest fear is for my wife's wellbeing as she's in the group that requires shielding and if for no other reason than that, I have to stay infection free to make sure she survives. At least where we live she can walk around for miles and not see another soul but there's no way I'm going to let her go into shops or busy areas even in a full hazmat suit.

People think it’s trendy, on both counts.

My wife feels the same as you, she goes to the local corner shop and won't let me leave the house.

The post about beards, the first time I shaved properly in ages was when I got my FFP3 mask. Masks over beards ARE useless.
The thing about supermarkets that worries me is, people get too close to you. At least with a mask on, even a homemade one there is some protection even if it's a tiny amount. If I was only 1% safer I'd take it.

It can be done. I have been using a CPAP machine for 8 years for sleep apnoea. I have a beard and the mask fits fine with leakage of under 5% which is very low. Shortish beard granted.

How do you know the leakage is under 5%?

Personally I don't see the point of having an FFP3 mask and not using it to it's full effect but if you are willing to take the risk, it's your call.

Regardless Joe, stay safe pal

The CPAP machine records lots of data so that you know how much sleep you're getting as well as leakage and other things. It's not a mask that you would wear other than on the machine anyway. It pumps air into my lungs all night because with obstructive sleep apnoea you stop breathing and never get deep sleep.

Interesting that they are using CPAP for Covid 19 and in some cases finding it more effective than ventilation.

Stay safe mate.
