Ah so now they're refusing to buy it, well ok then but at least the plentiful supply will mean cheap fish in the UK, A chip shop supper gets cheaper, excellent. Many countries you say, hmm, we'll see I guess.

We don't eat the fish we catch? Most of what we eat is imported that is true but we do eat at least a third of what we catch. However, if the price of UK caught fish was dead cheap IO think you might find it gets eaten, especially when the cost of import4d fish has risen. Lets call it market forces. PS, before the EU took over fishing we were a net exporter of fish, then they ruined our fishing industry and we became a net importer, now the pendulum will swing back.

| UK trade deal done with Japan on 11:49 - Sep 14 by Gwyn737 | Article in the FT today suggests that the deal with Japan has tighter rules on state aid that the former deal with the EU. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable that me can elaborate if this is important or not. At face value it reads like less power for the UK... |
Hi Gwyn, a very interesting post. State aid is so important to Johnson that its blocking the whole EU deal. Lets celebrate that idiot Liz Truss and the new Japan deal. Hooray. Except ....the state aid conditions on the new acceptable Japan deal, are more onerous than the state aid conditions that are considered unacceptable on the EU deal. Its almost like people were desperate for the Japan deal, however bad.

I’d like to know if this sets a precedent. If it’s out there that it’s a stipulation we’re prepared to accept, are we going to end up tied to similar ties in future deals?

Why wold fish be cheaper for the British market? As was explained in an earlier post, the EU didn't ruin of fishing industry, Britain willingly sold off our quotas for a quick buck.

If this is true you have to ask what on Earth is going on? If the Japan deal contains clauses which are much tighter and far more stringent than the WA and EU deal originally signed off by HMG, why is Boris looking to break international law on the one hand while signing up to something more restrictive and potentially worse on the other? It doesn’t make sense unless, it’s posturing re being anti EU to appease his support, there are ulterior reasons we aren’t aware of, could it be his negotiators are incompetent clueless (you’d like to think they aren’t) and the right and left hand don't know what the other is doing or Government is incompetent. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

If they refuse to buy our fish, or put ridiculous tariffs on the fish they sell to us, surely we'd be saying you cannot fish in our waters? So where do they get their fish from to sell to anyone?

It's the other way around. We are saying they can't fish our waters.Where will they get their fish from? Who knows, they will have to make new deals just like we have to.The difference being , they have a market of 550 million and we have one of 65 million. They have all the leverage and incentive.

I'm sure you understand market forces, when a product is in plentiful supply the price tends to drop, especially food which just goes to waste if not sold in time. The licences were sold because of the quotas, yes the Uk government let our fishermen down but was that because they were following EU rules? The Uk is very good at following every EU rule, or they were. Now we have Bojo who sees rules as...flexible, to say the least. It wasn't about a quick buck to the fishermen, they had extra capacity because they weren't allowed to catch so many fish any more. It was sell or go bust.

The fishermen will still have the same overheads, but a smaller market to sell to. There is no real demand for fish in the UK, hence it's why we sell to foreign markets. We can't create markets out of nowhere, there has to be a demand

There is demand for fish in this country we have just become net importers, that will change when the fish we catch is cheaper. The UK eats close to 6 billions worth of seafood a year.

They won't get their replacement fish from existing EU fishermen, they'd have to look outside the EU. They'll be buying and we'll have plenty to sell. If they won't buy ours they'll have to look further afield. If it turns out to be more expensive than just buying ours, who knows? It's market forces again, what prices will they face, do they have deals with other countries that can supply the fish, will they impose tariffs for any reason?

The point is being missed. They are going to make an example of us.They have stated that they won't buy our fish.If they have to go further to buy it then they will

You genuinely don't see this do you. If it is possible for them to buy that amount of fish from further afield at a higher price (cutting off their nose to spite their face, typical lefty behaviour)... ...then it is also possible for us to export our fish across the world also.

And again that would be typical political BS, forcing their electorate (well sort of electorate) to pay more for food. How do you think over 500 million people feel about the prospect of food prices rising? How do they feel about in the porer countries in Southern Europe where fish is a larger part of their diet? Where is the leverage in 550 million people being worse off?

Off course it's cutting off their noses etc, and it's all political, but they are not going to allow us to dictate to them. They will make an example of us, but we will suffer far more

We're not dictating to them though, they are trying to tell us what to do. They are demanding access to out international waters and demanding we agree to their rules on state aid. We are saying no as is our right as a sovereign country. The Lisbon treaty requires them to find a deal, to find a way but instead both sides are butting heads. As for who will suffer, time will tell.

And this I suspect is the real crux of the issue. I imagine Barnier, his crew and the EU probably have a similar view but from a polar opposite position and believe we are tying to dictate to them etc. They believe they have a right to fish our waters on account of quota’s being sold in the past, require a level playing field on state aid as they are concerned we will under cut them. Both sides need to take a pragmatic approach and sort out a deal.
