I don't disagree with you but I'd say that their stance was completely predictable. The passion of Brexiteers for leaving is matched by those in the EU wanting to keep it together.

The level playing field isn't all about workers rights though and lets face it, the Uk has/had better workers rights than many EU states. https://smallbusinessprices.co We can only hope that no government reduces workers rights in the future and they actually give more protections.

I read an article last night in which an ex minister indicated that if it went Pete Tong, Boris and his colleagues would look to shift blame to the impact of the pandemic. We don’t know what will happen, but reading that I was a tad more troubled.

If you want to talk about negotiating in good faith, Boris reneging on his deal etc is a great example. It’s clear the EU don’t want to make it easy for us to leave, but I see why they are doing it. How would you feel if you ran a business on one side of the street and you had a competitor on the other side of the street making and selling exactly the same thing as you do, but your competitor gets his business rates paid, his rent subsidised, an allowance for his staff, doesn’t have to comply with environmental standards you do and he also pays enjoys being able to pay less tax. As a result he can undercut you and sell at half the price you do. You on the other hand don’t get any subsidies, as a result your costs are higher and your selling price is higher - the result all the passing trade flock to your competitor. The EU have set standards which they want to maintain for a variety of reasons including keeping cheaper products out to protect their own suppliers. If we deviate from the standards they are applying to their own traders and we aren’t contributing to the pot, they won’t let us sell in their market. Both sides want their cake and to be able to eat it, there is limited room for compromise and neither are prepared to yield. Both sides are to a degree cutting off their nose to spite their face, it’s just a case of which side is harming itself the most. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I suppose it shows that the EU are actually awake enough to realise that an obvious divide and conquer attempt is being made. Boris needs to be a lot cleverer than that and he probably isn’t.

Boris is probably trying to “divide and conquer” because he’s not getting very far with Barnier et al and they want the negotiations to go through the team to prevent the “divide and conquer” tactic working. All 27 of the EU countries has their own agenda, but safeguarding the jobs and living conditions of the 27 individual governments is a priority and they won’t easily be persuaded to allow potential competitors to undercut their own businesses. I read in one of today’s papers that the contract for monitoring fishing activity in our waters has gone to a French company. I wish I could say it’s unbelievable, but sadly it isn’t. The contract, just like the blue passport contract should have gone to UK companies, but they didn’t. Taking back control. Not.

It's not a difficult question. If I was negotiating for the EU I'd do what the Commission tild me. If I didn't or couldn't do that then they'd replace me, simple really. As any deal has to go back to be ratified by ALL EU members, even if Barnier and us agree on something it still might not be approved.

Divide and conquer? These people are the supposed leaders of the free world, and they've been banned from speaking with each other. Don't you understand how ridiculous this is? It's not divide and conquer, it's diplomacy. Neighbouring countries are not allowed to talk to each other on issues that will affect their future. It's absolute nonsense and highlights what a massive barrier the EU is to any sort of progress on this continent.
