| Oven ready deal. on 13:22 - Dec 13 by Highjack | Divide and conquer? These people are the supposed leaders of the free world, and they've been banned from speaking with each other. Don't you understand how ridiculous this is? It's not divide and conquer, it's diplomacy. Neighbouring countries are not allowed to talk to each other on issues that will affect their future. It's absolute nonsense and highlights what a massive barrier the EU is to any sort of progress on this continent. |
They haven’t been banned from taking to each other. Macron, Merkel et al have appointed EU negotiators to deal with Brexit negotiations on their behalf and that’s who they expect the British Government to deal with. They have their say within the EU on the approach that their negotiators take but they don’t get involved personally in the negotiations. It isn’t difficult for Boris to grasp but it seems it’s too difficult for him.

I it right that Merkel has been quoted as saying she wants the UK to "crawl on broken glass" https://www.theguardian.com/po It's not about punishment people say. It's abut British exceptionalism, stupidity, ignorance, seems to me ita about blaming anyone besides the EU or the 2/3 European leaders who run things. It's all the UK's fault some people say. I wonder if the EU will accept a ratchet clause too, if, say, the UK sets different standards in any area would the EU agree to meet those standards if they were higher than EU standards?

The way I read it is that the article in the DM doesn’t say Merkel said those words. The article says “one source said that she was “determined to make Britain crawl across broken glass” rather than compromise.” which I took as the DM quoting the source. I may well be wrong though. The article is a bullish DM article. There is mention of the Johnson being “strong and resolute” and the Chancellor “wobbling” on account of the economic cost of “No deal” and was in the “sell out” camp. There’s also mention of of a “trust issue” between Merkel and Boris which isn’t surprising. There is also mention of Tory benefactors being happy with “No Deal”. Reading between the lines, I think it’s “No Deal” - the blame is being laid at the door of the EU. There aren’t many sources being named, it’s all anonymous.

No. It’s not right. It’s the Mail stirring up complete crap for the benefit of their intellectually challenged audience.

You’ve got it the wrong way round. It is the leaders that have said to the EU they don’t want to negotiate directly not the EU stopping them. They’ve said the EU are dealing with it and know what the parameters are. And Europe has progressed over the past 60 years to be the most generally peaceful, prosperous, educated, healthiest population of its size in the world.
