An eye for an eye.

The rule of “an eye for an eye” was part of God’s Law given by Moses to ancient Israel and was quoted by Jesus in his Sermon on the Mount. (Matthew 5:38, King James Version; Exodus 21:24, 25; Deuteronomy 19:21) It meant that when dealing out justice to wrongdoers, the punishment should fit the crime. *

The rule applied to deliberate injurious acts against another person. Regarding a willful offender, the Mosaic Law stated: “Fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, the same sort of injury he inflicted should be inflicted on him.”–Leviticus 24:20.

It's from the Babylonian code of laws. They got it from their God. Whoever he was. Marduk or one of them probably. They plagarised a lot of stuff these guys who wrote the bible.

So you wouldn't have hanged any Nazi's then?

If somebody murdered my son I would want the most severe punishment. If anybody can say otherwise they are a better person than I.

Wouldn't have hung anyone no.

Using your son is a personal thing as opposed to a judicial thing. There is a reason that judges and jurors cannot know the offender or have any connection. It is to avoid emotional decisions.

I know a few people that would hang someone if they assaulted one of their offspring, let alone killed them.

There has to be some deterrent in place, otherwise for whatever reason some people think they can take a life, and ferk the consequences.

In the Uk, by the look of reports there seems to be multiple stabbings nearly everyday in London now..

And also elsewhere..

I personally would like to bring back hanging, but also stoning people to death if their crime is that bad, we need a deterrent.

Edit: Just to add unlike the death penalty in USA where it takes years on death row, I'm talking instant execution..

I tell you what, these nutters murdering anyone around London, once you live stream the first hanging, I guarantee you they would pee themselves, and the idiots would put the knives away.

Surely America is a perfect example to show it isn't a deterrent.

To take a life you have to be a little unhinged or in an incredibly rare moment of complete loss of control. Neither of those scenarios lends itself to stopping and thinking ''hang on, if I do this, this won't end well for me''.

I imagine that is the sort of realisation you have after.

I disagree about taking a life. Some people are just pure evil and taking a life means nothing to them.

The USA is a perfect example of several things, mass gun ownership is wrong beinh abonther one.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

I can’t accept that, of course I have nothing to back it up but I think it’s very rare for someone to be a cold blooded murderer without a few screws loose.

Mental health plays a massive part, it just has to.

That's a good point. Even without the death penalty the thought of spending a large chunk of your life behind bars, should be enough to put any sane person off, committing such an act.

I'm pleasantly surprised to see you making a post like this.

A post, in fact, that I can imagine myself making. One that is not backed up by reams of "facts" but is more based on gut instinct, emotion, if you will, and an innate sense of what you believe to be right and wrong.

Very un-Gradgrindian, fair play.

To some people spending several spells in prison is almost a way of life. A kid where we used to live had been in prison 3 times before he was 21 and going down for a fourth time last I heard.

Well, I'll be honest with you, last night's post was purely based on emotion, after seeing attacks and murders happening in London appear on my timeline on twitter, IIRc think it was a 15 year old stabbed to death, and a different incident a 17 year old corrosive substance thrown over him, then stabbed..

It feels like it's all getting way out of hand.

The one major benefit of the death penalty is that they won't do it again, the second is that you don't have to feed, house or guard them for 50 odd years either.
There have been hundreds, maybe thousands of cases where other inmates or guards have been killed by lifers over the years, because there is nothing more they fear, there have also been many released to go on and kill again, especially the insane ones.
Should terrorists be allowed to live to continue to spread their insanity after taking many lives and ruining even more?

That;s why I believe there are some cases where it's justified to have the ultimate sanction. Mind you I also believe that prisons should do more in the way of rehabilitation, educatiing and training and giving inmates a reason to want to try and learn and get trained, like maybe reducing sentences.

The problem with that is a lot of criminals are incredibly devious and would be very adept at portraying themselves as reformed only to run amok when released again which is what happens incredibly often.

Maybe concentrate on first time offenders then, those that aren't just caught in the lifestyle, not too deeply involved.

Most first time offenders don’t go to prison in the first place. You have to do something really bad to go to prison these days. Most just get a slap on the wrist and told not to do it again. How often do we read about some horrific crime and the article will often say the perpetrator has multiple previous convictions? This country is a criminals paradise, we just don’t punish people like we should.

To re-inforce your point take this case in the post today.

These 2 have 80 convictions between them, note no mention of their sentences.

36 convictions for 58 offences and he will be out in less than two years. At what point does society say these people are beyond rehabilitation? Five offences? Ten? What’s the limit here? Even if we just assume there is only one victim to each offence that’s 58 people who’ll be reading that and feeling like they’ve been slapped in the face. That doesn’t include all the victims of the crimes that they’ve got away with of course. Even the judge said he’s got no fear of the law. It’s no wonder the fat bastard is smirking in that mugshot.

That's kind of the point, if we ren't going to lock people up we need to get them away from the causes of their offending. There are enough cases where you have little or no hope of changing them, like traveller families where it's pretty much a way of life for many of them. Just locking up the crooks hasn't rally worked either but we seem incacpable of finding a way that works.

Maybe, in the end, the only way is actually to treat them all like pure scum and plonk them all on a very heavily guarded island, give them what they need and let them carry on. The thing is, it seems to me, for crooks to prosper they need to have plenty of decent hard working people around to steal from. Put them somewhere (permanently) where everybody is just like them and they probably won't be so keen on the idea.

A good plan, Cat. Tried and tested. Invest them with real responsibility for their own actions and the effect is transformative.

I was thinking more of Cayenne that Oz and when I said heavily gaurded I meant purely the perimeter. Put them inside and let them run their own prison. I'm sure plenty would regret it.
Those Waters brothers are prime candidates, they won't be smurking after a month amongst scumbags just like them but with no rules and no guards to break up trouble.

But then I'm a savage, I must be to suggest treating other human being sin such a way.

I can think of a nice island of Scotland, I think it is called Anthrax island, ideal for terrorists and murderers.

The one thing that did drastically bring down crime rates in NYC in the US was 3 strikes and life.
