Nothing a good advertising campaign can't change extolling the virtues of healthy British fish. After all you only have look at the success of macdonnell and Kentucky chicken which are basically very unhealthy diets.

Bang on.

As a nation I suspect we've become too squeamish about fish over the decades since the war.

Mackerel and herring are plentiful and cheap and our forbears wolfed them down.

Today, they're regarded as too oily, too bony and too strong-tasting for wimpish British tastes. It's notable that mackerel is often served with a mustard sauce, presumably to mask it's pungent fishiness.

I don't exempt myself from criticism here: I used to regard my elder sister's invites to tea with great apprehension in case she served up her signature dish (which I used to silently refer to as 1950's Prison Punishment Food), namely Boiled Potatoes, Savoy Cabbage, Grilled Whole Mackerel. Most of the meal would be spent trying not to choke on fish bones.

I wonder what % of the UK's population will be tucking into a Yarmouth Bloater for tea this evening.

0%, I suspect - with the possible exception of FelixstoweJack, who, being a patriotic Brexiteer, and supporter of his local East Anglian economy, should, by rights, be scoffing it every day.

Mackerel is fantastic for you. As is herring. The problem a lot of people have with it is not the eating of it but the fact it absolutely stinks your house out when you cook it.

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

Can't beat cornish sardines and pilchards plus north sea herring. Currently we have to import a lot of cod from both the EU and Iceland as out fishermen as limited to how much cod they can catch.

We are lucky to still have a small fishmonger in our local high street with freshly caught local fish.

No doubt Swansea Market still have fish stalls and fresh fish can also be the fish merchants in trawler road in the Marina.

We import a lot of cod, tuna, salmon, prawn, haddock. This is what we eat over here. The price will rise without tariff free trade. Which hits the consumer.

We catch a lot of herring, mackerel, sole. We export most of it as we don’t eat that fish here in any great quantity. If there are tariffs, sales of those will drop which hits fishermen.

So lose, lose.

You are assuming that we will just switch to eating the fish that we do catch as the price will drop (to mop up the surplus caused by decreased exports). But that is unlikely to happen, as we won’t change our eating habits. Not quickly at least. (And even if we did, our fishing fleet are still out of pocket as prices are lower).

A nation doesn’t change its eating habits overnight.

Edited to add: you’ve said you eat a lot of fish, I bet it’s not mackerel, herring and sole.

I am by no means an expert fishologist, but surely apart from cod which would come from the North Atlantic around Iceland the main bulk of those fish you listed we surely import from elsewhere in the world?

It’s not a case of whether it’s good for you or not.

The question was asked why do we export fish and yet import more and the answer is because it’s different fish. And a nation doesn’t change eating habits very quickly.

Irrelevant to the point being made.

See previous answer.

If you are talking tariff impact, you have to remember that when our free trade with the EU falls away any free trade we have with all sorts of other countries through agreements with the EU also falls away unless we have replace the trade agreement.

Our fish comes from all sorts of places.

I used to eat a lot of Mackerel when I was younger, use to go fihing with my dad. We used to eat it more when the local fishmonger in Mumbles (next to the White Rose) I forget the name, been a long time, had a very good stock. These days I eat what is there which is mostly Haddock and Cod.

I would eat Mackerel again though, it's Plaice I'm not keen on.

We may not change our habits quickly but you can't buy whats not there and when food is cheap, people will start buying it.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Oily fish like mackerel or kippers gives me acid reflux, I can't eat it. I don't know many people who eat it regardless of it's price.

No, that wasn't the question being asked. The question was, why do you say there's no domestic market for fish when we buy so very much, importing more than we actually catch ourselves. Over 720,000 tonnes is imported which proves there is a domestic market for fish.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Apart from the 720,000 tonnes we imporrt every year on top of the 288,000 tonnes we keep from our own catch but no, besides that there's no market.

Makes me wonder where the 1.4 billion fishing contributes to GDP comes from, seeing as nobody is buying fish.

£1.4 billion , is a drop in the ocean - excuse the pun, our total economy is £2.6 trillion

Isn't the economy made up of the adding up of all those £1.4billion type of industries around the country in addition to even larger industries which all contribute to the final much larger total figure?

Putting to one side of course that fishing in UK waters is a much bigger industry than quoted anyway as you've failed to add in the value of fish hoovered up by foreign fishing fleets and that the British fishing fleet is much reduced because of its minuscule allowed quotas in its own waters which devasted the industry in this country but can be recovered and increased. under UK control

Lets ditch all the £1.4bn industries as presumably they are microscopic in the eyes of the rewhingers, strip out the figures associated with those industries and then start quoting total economy figures after doing that, at the same time ignoring the total job losses in all those smaller industries whose turnovers don't meet the level required of the top economists on this site who feel that they are irrelevant to the countries economic wellbeing and that we must only consider industries above the £1.4bn threshold as even vaguely important to the country.

Fish is being hoovered up by foreign companies because we willingly because sold lot's of our fishing rights, to Dutch, Spanish and Icelandic companies. It has nothing to do with control of Uk waters

You are correct the economy is made up of lot's of smaller industries, but our fishing industry is not something to get worked up about

And those quotas are coming back giving our fishing industry the potential for growth. It has a lot to do with control of our waters.

You say it's nothing to get worked up about uet the EU plainly disagrees.

We....... didn't sell lots of our fishing rights to anyone.

Incompetent fools in successive Labour and Conservative and Lib Dem governments allowed certain individuals to sell their fishing quotas to foreign owned vessels and companies rather than being obliged to return said licenses if they didn't intend to fish themselves.

In fact I see absolutely no reason why myself nor any member of this forum shouldn't apply for licences to sell on even if we have never been to sea and own no boats in competition to those people with trawlers not putting to sea and sellng their licences to the highest bidder?

Surely if none of us, sea folk or message board punter, has an intention of using a fishing quota which appears to be allowed at the moment then we should all be allowed to apply and gain a licence to sell on for profit ( a la Graysons ferry company with no ships style) under the current ludicrous practice?

Alternatively back in the real world that most of us live in a competent government managing sustainable fish stocks would issue licences to those who wish to use them to fish and not allow the selling on by a select few supposed fishing families, individuals or larger companies

Use your licence or lose it.

What has happened to you? You’ve always been the one standing up for the little guy over the toffs, the big money and the corporations.

Now in the last few days alone you have been dismissing poor Tim the Trawlerman of 69 Trout Terrace in Grimsby and his right to earn a modest living whilst championing Morgan Stanley and the Qatar investment fund.

One of the enduring images of the referendum campaign was Bob Geldof and his menagerie of celebrity luvvies in a multi million pound yacht sticking two fingers up at the flotilla of fishing boats below.

You’re Bob Geldof. “Just give us the f*****g money”.

We didn't give any quotas away, they were sold.

The EU is very worked up over fishing, read the link,

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/464

or maybe just this bit,

But the EU wants access for its boats and says reaching a "fair deal" on fisheries is a pre-condition for a free trade agreement (with no tariffs or taxes on goods crossing borders).

The EU says a fair deal on fishing is a pre condition eh so that makes you very wrong again.
