It was Drakeford who introduced a lockdown on 20 December. Johnson didnt until just before the New Year. Drakeford made a decision on Christmas before Johnson. Johnson as usual wanted to keep things open and that is why the Welsh rate is so much lower.

And thanks to Boris and the UK government in their exemplary work on securing so many vaccines, the rate should be driven down faster. We are all in this together, it didn't take long for the Eu to show their true colours.

Johnson got lucky with the vaccine emerging. Without the science, the uk would be royally screwd.

Lucky? We had been placing orders 3 months before anyone else, I call that forward thinking. I bet their are a lot of people throughout the world, wishing their government acted with such haste.

No not the ordering aspect. Simply the fact that we have a vaccine at all at this point in time. Experts are useful after all then Mr Gove.... Without the science, we would be royally screwed.

Yes but that applies to the entire world. What the UK government has done brilliantly, the best in the world in fact, is procure supplies and distribute it.

Innit. A confused, arbitrary and poorly directed lockdown "policy" against a far less dangerous variant than much of England has dealt with and we're still at the top of the deaths/cases table. How many more will eventually be on there due to us sitting on 200,000 vaccines for a month? Congratulations Professor Drakeford. Bangup job. He must be grateful that Sturgeon is doing her level best to steal his limelight by f*cking up the vaccine rollout to even greater levels.

That's not true, I saw Bojo on the news before Christmas saying the Bubble was cancelled. https://www.bloomberg.com/opin Johnson announced the new variant and all 4 governments cancelled the bubble idea. Wasn't thatwhat happened? Until the new variant Drakeford was quite happy to follow Bojo's bubble and many people thought it was a bad idea. All politicans got the Christmas plan wrong, the bubble was clearly bad and if this new variant hadn't been discovered for another week it would have been a disaster. We got lucky. I can't credit any politician for that but I can credit the scientists who worked so hard doing the checks and bringing the information forward.

No that isnt what happened. Drakeford brought in a lockdown here. At the time Johnson was bringing England out of lockdown and putting places in lower tiers than when they went into the firebreak. At the time the Welsh rate had been soaring and was the highest in the World and Drakeford acted. Johnson didnt because they had just come out of a months firebreak and at the time he acted the English rates had rocketed because they had found the new variant.

I for one am tired of the idea that this is some sort of competition. If you look at countries via geographies, latitudes, economies, population densities, age and health profiles etc. etc. they are broadly similar in outcomes.

This is it and one thing I've noticed about this whole saga is that the figures have a nasty way of biting you on the a$$ further on down the road. How many times have comments been made when Westminster is in a better place or wales or Scotland etc. etc. only for the opposite to be the case a month later. Latest is the Vaccination process. Couple of weeks ago Wales were horizontal in the vaccine role out now they're catching up. At the minute the EU look miles behind but they will catch the UK and wouldn't be surprised if there's a role reversal in a month.

I was just going topost that. Thing is he says about hindsight but how many people on here were saying lokdown earlier and for longer? How many were saying the Christmas bubble was a bad idea? We didn't even have all the info. In which case the Senedd cost more Welsh lives than needs be and Gething is using hindsight as an excuse. Bojo, of course, was even worse. He waited 6 weeks after he was advised and still (later on) got the devolved govs to agree to Christmas. It makes you wonder who was persuading him to wait, it wasn't the medical experts. Was Bojo, were any of the politicians swayed by corporate pressure?
