| Being proud of your country 14:07 - Feb 15 with 4898 views | onehunglow | Should we be and if so why? Countries are formed by lines drawn on a map by politicians often with disastrous results, like the Balkans. If we live in a fascist/communist country or one with a murderous past-like Turkey for example, why should anyone be proud | |

We also excel at selling weapons to dictators and despots, at having rubbish politicians and wasting money so I can't argue against the other point. |
I think it’s great to love your country and I think it’s vitally important that it’s history and heritage are promoted and preserved. I just think it’s important that you keep an open mind and enjoy what the rest of the world has to offer. There no need to dismiss another nation to prove your welshness. I do think we Welsh are lucky. The country is beautiful we have our own language and and a flag we can be proud of. I’ve come out in defence of the English on a number of occasions recently and I’ve thought about it a lot and have come to the conclusion that’s it’s really difficult to be English. English patriotism is linked with the far right. They don’t celebrate their flag and most hate their anthem. They are the go to villains for the Celtic nations, the french, the Australians and many others, then because the can’t keep on top of the history of all the animosities (most of which were centuries ago) they’re called arrogant. We should be glad about what we’ve got but make sure we use it in a positive way..

We haven't actually, we are being certain counterfeits and we are lagging at giving the booster jab, which is what gives the real protection. We have done well at selling weapons, but again we are not the top. Can anything think of anything that we are the best at?

We could also do with understanding that history is written my winners and for a long time that was us. I watched a documentary by Al Murray last night which talked about the Battle of Britain and how the plucky Brit narrative is not the case. You only have to spend time in the British Museum to see what we’ve been up to over the years. The United Kingdom, the worlds biggest supplier of independence days!

Although my feelings have somewhat dimmed towards the UK in general imo we've given a lot to the world to be proud of . We still lead the world in medical development, the internet of which without we'd be a lot poorer for not having it . Powered flight , 8 years before the Wright brothers, the radio and incidentally both invented by Welsh men . I'd still much rather live here than a lot of places I've been and still although atm muted proud to say it.

| Being proud of your country on 02:51 - Feb 16 with 849 views | Highjack | It’s an incredibly basic human (and most other species really) instinct to protect, conserve and defend your territory, your family and in a wider sense your ‘tribe’. So pride in your homeland is probably one of the most natural feelings you can get. It’s also why it inflames so much passion in many. We forget sometimes that we are nothing more than great apes acting on instinct far more often than we’d like to admit to ourselves. | |

Like it or not, the country is seen as a trailblazer regards Brexit, the way it has managed the vaccine, and the biggest thing, forward planning regards new customs deals with non EU countries.

There are many things other countries have admired over the decades, Keith. The NHS. our Armed Forces right down to small things like the traditional stiff upper lip and our ability to queue. People (usually British people) like to knock our country, they especially like to say things about our country as if we are the only ones who ever did anything wrong. Empire and Colonialism are the usual targets, as if no one ever built empires, killed thousands, had slaves and robbed other places blind before the British Empire, and since in some cases. Highjack is right, it's a natural instinct to defend your corner and until enough of us realise our corner should mean the entire planet, things will continue to get worse.

Lag behind other countries? Really? Which countries are they then? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/wor Israel for sure, but who else? Well I can tell you we come 9th and no other country in Europe is doing better than us, the USA is behind us, https://ig.ft.com/coronavirus- Those countries that haven't supplied stats I don't know about but I doubt they are doing better.

The NHS is not a world beater. It's very good, but many in Europe are just as good if not better. Our armed forces are not world beaters either, as Iraq and Afghanistan showed. Take a look at this if you think they are. They are very good at small unit level, but that's about it. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Losin forces have been decimated and couldn't fight their way out of a wet papaer bag

| Being proud of your country on 16:32 - Feb 15 by onehunglow | It's where I am. No more naked love of a country no different to many others. As British ,we have a very dubious past of colonialism that has screwed up countless countries to this day. The older I get the more objective Ive become. Looking around at the d1ckwards,the litter louts, the feckless kids aware of their rights but not responsibilites ,a generation of old people dumped by families and society at large and a justice system that insults every victim of crime. The Welsh?.Well, we don't go to Chapel as we did, we don't sing hymns as we did,and the country is as full of cretins as the rest of the UK. We are also socially and linguistically divided to the point of hatred. |
I agree with the sentiments. Is this a result of modern unfettered market economies where people have learned that self interest is the only thing that matters? Why do people litter?

Selfishness is not a new thing. It’s a common trait for most living organisms.
