If Swansea beat Cardiff they are notionally level with Watford with 9 games to play. The next 4 are good fixtures for Swansea with mid table drifters. Brentford are prone to have dodgey spells and nerves. Cooper needs to freshen up the squad and should have done it a few weeks back. Manning Arriola, Latibeaudire, Whttaker should all have 10 plus games under their belt altready. Brandon Coopers is also available and keen as mustard. Sometimes a manager iss forced by crcumstances to rotate the first 11. Roberts and Ayew might be " physical freaks" but a 5% drop off can be critical. Fine margins. It all very well saying professionals should not be tired but it is staleness not tiredness. The loss of edge and sharpness. [Post edited 17 Mar 2021 0:08]

I disagree, they aren’t like for like. A stale good player is better than a fresh worse one. latibeaudiere does have 10 games under his belt for us, Ryan Manning has 15. Defence is one of our most rotated areas and in my opinion that rotation has weakened us. That leaves Arriola and Whittaker. None of us have seen Arriola enough to judge, the American fans said he is a very middle of the road player - and that’s in the MLS. As for Whittaker, I’d be disappointed if I saw the team sheet against Cardiff on the weekend as he was starting. He’s not experienced enough to be thrown in at the deep end. Derby fans said they had mugged us, he is far too lightweight and inexperienced. He is clearly both and hopefully when he fills out and gets experience in less important games he may come good.

Most Derby fans I saw/read seemed to think he had potential but had just stalled slightly from no games as opposed to saying they mugged us Wouldn’t dream off string him just for the sake of it on Saturday but whether lightweight or not we have to have some type of threat up front and it’s been a while since Ayew and Lowe have provided it

Oh agreed, it was very much a mixed bag. Some happy to see the back of him. Some amazed they managed to get a fee. Some disappointed as they thought he had potential. https://dcfcfans.uk/topic/3672 But what is consistent is that nobody was arguing he should be a part of their side at the moment and those that were disappointed to let him go were disappointed as a view to the future, not now. So why we think he should be starting for us when even Derby fans, a lower half club don’t think he should have been for them is a mystery.

Completely see what you are saying, but it's not just a "stale" player, in Lowe we have a player woefully out of form and shot to bits confidence and legs wise. I'm no hater of the guy, I'm actually a big fan but it's sad to see him play like this, needs atleast a fortnight out of the firing line. Although, he may fancy another derby masterclass.

He’s bang out of form, agree. But he’s still an outball and is still potentially dangerous physically. We are out of serious options sadly, which was always likely to be the case. One of the main reasons we are struggling lately is the ball just isn’t being held up, which is the role of a natural striker. Our attacks last mere seconds and then they have the ball back. Nothing is getting built with striker and midfield link play. I don’t see Whittaker playing a lone striker role with his physique, which means we will have to switch formation to give him a striker partner, which didn’t work too well yesterday when we went 2 up front. Now is not the time for tinkering in my opinion. These are the cards we have been dealt, our squad has always been one of the weakest in the top 5 or 6, that will show itself most in the latter stages of the season and you could argue that it is doing exactly that. We have to just dig in. [Post edited 17 Mar 2021 9:02]

Let's put it this way,if I m allowed too. Whittaker is deemed lightweight and nor ready YET he charges around when playing against MANCHESTER CITY and scores a cooly taken goal. He is then consigned back to the bench whilst both Ayew and Lowe struggle. He comes on last night and first touch is a shot he runs on to and almost scores. Htf is he not ready for Cardiff City -planets away from Citeh.

The fact we are discussing starting someone as inexperienced and undeveloped like Whittaker simply because he had a shot (?!) shows the state of the squad we have and the limited options Cooper has at his disposal up front. When Whittaker came on he was playing as part of a 2 up front. An experiment that didn’t work as we sacrificed too much elsewhere. Doing that again would be madness, Whittaker is not a lone striker, especially against a physical team like Cardiff - look at the guy.

No,we are discusing this as we have failed to bring in an adequate striker SINCE AUGUST. We are pretty desperate and this is why yoing Lowe is struggling a he isn't and wont be,neither is Ayew. Both have given it their all but they are now shot to pieces. If that is not evident to you then we are done. Whittaker LOOKS like he can score. Who else in the team does?

We don’t have money, who would you have brought in for 700k? Strikers aren’t cheap, especially ones that are of the calibre to fit into a side going for promotion to the Premier League. Pukki and Toney are the equivalents for our rivals - if you think there is or was one available for that amount of money I’d be interested to hear.

He is an outball, and dangerous physically when he's fresh and at it. He was dominated yesterday on the deck and on in the air by Carter Vickers which doesn't bode well. We have played two up front most of the season in a 352 but only altered it to accommodate Hourihane.

Lowe has been sole striker for most of the season, with Ayew playing more of a free role. Certainly not two up front. We revert to 2 up front when we need to but it’s a rarity because we tend to get exposed. As out of form Lowe is, he is still a better option in the formation we are forced to play. I’d be very surprised if Whittaker starts against one of the most physical teams in the league. It would be madness.

Lowe might be stronger but he is no goal threat right now. He s a trier and I love the lad. Whittaker will be looking to shoot when Lowe won't. That way, he is a better propect. Not ideal I grant you. That begs the quetsion why Cooper has assembled a team of so many utterly one footed players and also so many small ones. We aren't forced to play anything though are we? We have a formation which works, and what the players have been coached it down to a tee. We easilly have the players to play a 451, 433. But as soon as we change formation from the three at the back we look all over the place, that for me, is down to coaching not the players we have on the park.

Of course we are, it is sensible to set the formation to the teams strengths. If we are to do that then we are forced to play a certain formation. We don’t have a striker, which is why we don’t play two players there out of position and we can pack the midfield with players in their traditional positions and hope we can feed the player we have shoehorned up front. For the majority of the season that player has been Lowe. As soon as we switch the problem of not having a natural striker doesn’t go away AND it weakens us in midfield. It means we get less possession in midfield and the ball isn’t sticking up front. It has nothing to do with coaching and everything to do with personnel. The fact we are still 3rd is stunning.

Disagree. Someone looking to shoot is too basic a thought process. We are up against an incredibly physical side, you don’t mess with the formation pretty alien to us and you don’t start a striker with such little experience and so under developed physically. You just don’t. Agree we are looking to make a silk purse out of a sows bladder. We have been all season, our squad is painfully thin and severely lacking in certain areas.

| Whittaker on 21:41 - Mar 16 by Luther27 | Lowe and Ayew have got us where we are. They are out on their feet and have been for the last eight games at least but they are still giving what’s left. A bit of support for them wouldn’t go amiss here. Whittaker is a good looking performer for our future. We haven’t got the luxury of replacing our starters with anything else because we don’t have anyone else who fits the system Cooper plays. We just got to suck up this result and move on. |
The thing about that is, when you haven't got the players for a system to work you need to change the system. If we need to adapt to fit Whittaker in, in the circumstances maybe we should. What other choice do we have, keep playing 2 forwards who aren't scoring or creating? We can support Loew and Ayew all we want but it won't give them their spark back but a bit of rest might. Look on the positive side, Cardiff probably think they know whats coming Saturday, maybe we can take them by surprise!

| Whittaker on 11:04 - Mar 18 with 810 views | MoscowJack | Lowe and Ayew have both looked shocking for the past 6 or so weeks. Personally, I would go with pretty much the same team that stuffed the scum in the first game. Smith, Jay and Grimes in midfield provides the base to defend and support Ayew and Lowe. This way, they're not isolated as they are now. I just want Hourihane out of the team. He's making the rest look poor and we're playing with 10 men. If he starts on Saturday, I will question Cooper for the first time since he arrived. If he starts, we will lose. I'm sure Lowe and Ayew are tired etc but they are being exposed, left isolated and seem to have given up winning the ball. Give them the base support of the 3 men (Jay, Smith and Grimes) and they will improve. I hope I'm right!!!! I feel sick thinking about Saturday........ | |

Been impressed with Whittaker each time I've seen him, he's definitely got an eye for goal and looks a worker, the telling thing for me though, is coopers comments about him on Tuesday, the "Club" brought him in, might be a nothing comment, but who knows, Cooper won't be dictated to though, I'm sure.

Nope luck over the course of 30+ games is negligible. It's usually the term people use when they aren't able to determine the logic behind something. You blame Cooper for taking us to 3rd, I praise Cooper for taking us to 3rd. It's an incredible position to be in and one absolutely nobody said they expected prior to the season starting.
