Meanwhile a large amount of the Welsh population has lived on 20% less pay or seen their business go bust. Look forward to paying it back via my taxes. |
A small percentage of staff are surgeons and therefore earning 100k. A smaller percentage will have been doing nothing. The majority of staff have been working and in full restrictive PPE and bloody worried that they may catch something in their place of work and possibly die. Those who have had to live on 20% less pay i do sympathise with BUT that does mean they will not be paying transport costs and the other expenditures associated with working. They also will have been paying less NI and tax and have had the choice to stay at home and be safe. I feel for the small business though.

Wales seemed a lot fairer when we had the Welsh Office and WDA. Just think how many gullible fools voted for the Assembly in Swansea because they thought there was a cat in Hell's chance of it being based here. They basically voted to kill their own city.

Could be worse. As overlooked as South West Wales is compared to the Cardiff tumour, imagine what it must be like living somewhere like Wrexham, or the seriously deprived North Wales coast. They were living off scraps before, never mind now. All you need to know about the WG's attitude to anywhere other than South East Wales is how easily the HMRC office in Wrexham was upped and moved to Cardiff. It should have been the other way around. There's enough well paid Government jobs in Cardiff and Newport as it is, but no. The beasts appetite will never be sated.

As did I, especially when the general consensus became known that the dimwits in cardiff were not interested , thats was until someone whispered in their shell likes all the benefits it would provide them . A total stich up from its concept including selling waste land to increase the bank balances of certain interested parties, the barrage to make the area look "nice" despite public opposition , the ousting of Rhodri Morgan who wasn't part of the "programme" .Altogether a shameful episode .

It wasnt the Welsh Government that was responsible for the moving of HMRC jobs from Wrexham to Cardiff. It was the UK government who did that just like they have done in South West Wales and indeed are planning for other places in the UK such as South West England where the only office will be in Bristol. Is the Welsh government guilty for the loss of jobs from Devon and Cornwall as well.

And if the Welsh Government had asked them to move the jobs to Wrexham instead the UK Govt would have refused? The same UK govt at the moment cheerfully making plans to decentralise functions across the UK? You'd have to be staggeringly naive to think that decision wasn't made without at least the assent , if not the full backing and encouragement of the Senedd.

I agree with the analogy but , form the nationalists perspective, if they can't get a ggod deal then they don't want to be part of the union. Scotland became part of the union for very different reasons to Wales.

The UK has made a decision where they were going to based. They have reduced from over 400 to something like 13. Look at the cities they have decided to relocate to. All massive cities where these are going to have large populations which North Wales doesnt have. Look at the cities they are using. Bristol, Cardiff, Birmingham, Belfast, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool etc. Trying to blame the Welsh Assembly for the policy of the UK Government is senseless when there is clear evidence from elsewhere what is happening. Compare the UKs government of centralisation with the Welsh Assembly's policy which has offices in Cardiff, Swansea, Merthyr Tydfil, Llandrindod Wells, Newtown, Carmarthen and Llandudno.

As somebody who works in the industry I can assure you are wrong. If you believe surgeons who work for the NHS & also earn a lot of money doing private work (which they haven't done much of this year, more so in Wales as we have the longest waiting lists) deserve a £500 bonus for the last 12 months so be it. There are plenty of NHS staff worthy some should be giving money back.

Just to add to this the PCS union had been running a campaign for many years locally about keeping offices open and this was backed by many local MPs, AS and the Welsh Government. HMRC had other ideas and were intent on having massive offices in very few cities. From memory I believe the plan was to have 52000 staff in 13 large offices. Wrexham had under 200 staff as did Swansea. Cardiff already had nearly 2000 staff and HMRC wanted a workforce of nearly 4000 in each. Where do you think they were going to relocate to. They rejected smaller satellite offices with about 500 staff in each. They decided that Swansea was within reasonable daily travel of Cardiff and Wrexham in daily travel of Liverpool. You just talk nonsense about it with no actual knowledge of what actually happened.

The situation in Cardiff was that the staff were in buildings for Llanishen which for a number of years had been talked of as not being fit for purpose. It was built in the late 60s or early 70s. Even without office closures the was always going to be plans to relocate it. There had been talk of it moving to Cardiff Gate and just off junction 33 for a number of years. Ty Glas housed nearly 2000 staff. When they were planning a new office of 300-4000 staff it was always going to be built somewhere in the Cardiff area and for several years there had been sites looked at in Cardiff City Centre. The big site originally being looked at was on the other side of the railway station. The idea was it would be close to the station to allow people to travel from the valleys, Newport and as far as Swansea easily be train. It was compounded by HMRC's plan to close all its offices over the next 6 years and relocate into 13 centres. Those are the facts. Sorry to actually talk about something I know something about having worked there for many years and being friendly with people trying to keep offices open. This was HMRC's brainwave and is happening throughout the UK over the next few years. It had nothing to do with the Welsh Assembly despite you and others as usual trying to apportion the blame to them. This might give you some background into what they plan was. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/bus https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/bus [Post edited 19 Mar 2021 15:32]
