That's a good point, lots of children go there from two different valleys, Dulais and vale of Neath, as well as some urbanites from the outskirts of Neath itself, never knew anyone from there doing it in my time. I wasn't even thinking of that until you mentioned, I was thinking of my village (which is now a town), the place where I work down in the smoke and I come into contact with loads and where I have lived for the last few decades down West, I don't know anybody that had done it.

How do you know? “Have you done a Duke of Edinburgh award” isn’t close to the top of the list of questions people ask each other in conversation. I don’t think I’ve ever asked anyone the question so there may well be people who I know who have done it.

There might be people I know that exist that have done it and I don't know they have done it, but the point stands I don't know of anybody that has done it and I know a lot of people. How do you get to do it ?, who gets invited ?, how do you apply ?, do they advertise in places where youngsters hang out like valley pubs ?

| Phil the Greek. Great innings on 11:45 - Apr 15 by Boundy | Its now a Onesie , either a great floatation aid or an anchor . I wonder has any teacher been brave enough to test the theory . Doing the Army swimming test in army combats was no fun, although i did learn how to make a flotation aid with a pair of denims , one of life's skills which I must admit not having the opportunity in using since 1974 ( just for Killkenny) [Post edited 15 Apr 2021 11:46]

I remember thinking as a very young kid, probably six, why are we doing this ? That wasn’t the DOE awards thingy, or maybe it was, either way, maybe it’s a thing for certain family groups, but wasn’t mine, |
Was it part of the ASA awards? It used to be.

Loads did it in mine as well. Given over 6 and a half million kids have done it since it started, it’s fairly obviously pretty inclusive.

I'm amazed Liverpool gets a hard time on here seeing it feels the same about the rich/posh/privileged/public school educated Tory voting vile scum. Thought the working class stuck together |
You have a quite extraordinarily warped view of what you incessantly refer to as the ‘working class’. No one in my working class family would have dreamt of referring to a 99 year old who’d just died in such a way whether it was a prince or anyone else. Perhaps lack of basic decency is what you’re used to? Don’t tar the rest of us In such a way.

We used to do that in the school pool, our PE teacher often had us doing such stuff. WhenI learned to SCUBA my instructor had me doing it too, to see how well I could swim, it wasn't officially part of the test but he just wanted to see. Then I had to swim 8 full lengths non stop and tread water for 10 minutes, I couldn't get near that know!

And just who are you to preach about what is decent . Your arrogance has become intolerable to many . It might impress your acolytes but not me,never has so save your lectures for the dumb. Working class? You? It' s a badge of honour for many and one of convenience for others. Its like being referred to as average, ordinary, man(or woman) in the street,or Ordinary Joe (Josephine) Thank you .

It requires no arrogance to point out that someone in a public position describing a 99 year old who has just died as a piece of sh*t lacks decency. Nor does it require arrogance to point out that you describing such lack of decency as an attribute of the working class demonstrates rather more about you than it does about anyone else. You are absolutely obsessed with ‘class’. You talk about it incessantly. Frequently while sneering. You’re basically the Daily Mail in human form.

From being a very liberal (nb lower case 'l') lady she started to sound like Jacob Rees Mogg. In our family the Daily Mail is known as the 'Daily Malicious'. There again, it's a very popular paper and forms the largest pile in my newsagent

I’ve long since given up on them We get the Mail on Saturday as we like the TV guide After reading and marking what to watch, we then either go for a walk or a swim or a cycle . Reading papers is a waste of time I can read Izvestia , Mirror or Pravda on here anyway You re back off ignore and on probation . We ll see how it goes

Good financial pages, good horse racing pages and appeals to middle aged, middle classes, little Englander types yearning for the Empire who vote Conservative and support the Monarchy. [Post edited 18 Apr 2021 21:41]
