Presumably just like the labour Party administration's complete and utter disaster that was the reform of the Welsh NHS which was such a fiasco that it all had to be reversed at huge cost 7 years later.

You'd hope it's through taxation? How much will they need to raise tax? How much money will they need?

Drakeford has said there'll be no tax rises until the pandemic is beaten so that could be a fair while. If they are going ahead with this, where is the money coming from?

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Yes I don't think as a society we pay enough tax and tax is a good way of spreading wealth.

Where else would Drakeford expect the money to come from, the Welsh magic money tree or Westminster.

He's still drunk on his election results, I bet even he couldn't believe it.

How do you justify that then? You'd increase taxes to spread wealth but when people are not working, choose to live on benefits, why do they deserve the money?

Do you think we should have a UBI but then people have to work for that money? There's plenty of work cleaning, picking up rubbish, painting, doing gardening.

Can a UBI system work in the one country?

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Countries around the World are looking at UBI as a possible/potential way to solve issues like eradicating poverty and there being not enough work to go around.

I'm not against UBI. It could be a way to resdistribut wealth AND it would end unemployment. Anybody without a job could be told they'll get UBI as long as they do the minimun amount of required hours and we give everybody a suitable role.

It could be good for physical and mental health but I still wonder how it will be brought in, how it will be run, how much will it be and can it be sustainable unless everybody does it?

I wonder, could we tell people on UBI they'd not pay any tax and then tax those who do have jobs? But tax the rich a lot more? That could definitely only work if all countries did it.

What we are seeing with the rich (this might surprise you Trampie) sickens me. I saw a story about Superyachts,

https://www.boatinternational.

During the pandemic sales soared. I read that Bezos had spent 350 million pounds on a 417 foot yacht AND had a second yacht built, only 75 ft this time, but the second yacht was a support yacht with a helicopter pad, a garage, speed boats AND a minisub apparntly. So every time Bezos goes sailing he's taking two yachts. It's obscene.
One of the other billionaires tweetd that he was stuck, isolated on his yacht and he got ripped apart because he was moored somewhere tropical on his luxury flaoting island.

There are so many in the world with no clean water, little food or clothes and who live in slums (and that's a bit of a generous description for some of these "homes") and we have the Bexos world. It's wrong.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

The uk total debt is £2.1 trillion.2 Mar 2021.

Westminster just borrows money.
Westminster has a magic money tree.

Trident could save £205 billion.

The social care system definitely needs to be reformed in Wales and England. There needs to be a more joined up approach between social services, care and the health service so that people can get the care they need in hospital etc and then be housed in a more appropriate setting. This will prevent bed blocking in hospital, delays in operations because there are no beds etc. The one issue is who pays for it?
A mate of mine has an elderly father who is in his mid 80’s, he’s worked hard all his life (up until about 10 years ago) paid his taxes and is comfortable. He is now suffering with dementia and needs care and support - he has to pay and it’s costing him a fortune. Had he p.... all his money away he’d now get it for free. There needs to be a balance and a mature conversation about this and care in general.

I can only see this working in countries with a hard border. Its just not practical in the UK with soft borders. How would you stop people moving from one side of the border (in some cases 100M) to the other just for handouts.

TF you're not in charge, I pay enough tax on my food , my house, my pension , my wages.any inheritance , driving insurance and anything else i may have forgotten just to supplement the likes of the junkie living next door or the thousands of others who blanch at the idea of working .I'm all for helping others who have fallen on hard times and willing to help them selves but the rest most of the time its a life choices, so with that choice goes the consequences .

That's why I said it's only sustainable if everyone does it. Otherwise we'd have a rise in inward migration as people looked for the free handouts. Imagine you live in England and you're one of ( as Pikey might put it) the dossers, you won't work but you will claim every benefit you can...you see Wales paying UBI to every resident.....the outcome seems quite predictable. Again it's human nature, some people only ever want to take. If we didn't tell UBI recipients they HAVE to give something back, we'll end up with all the dossers from across the UK and beyond trying to move here.

I agree with yo, Boundy, we pay enough tax. Maybe Trampie doesn't realise how much tax we really pay,

https://www.scottishtrustdeed.

Our Council tax bill here is now £184 per month, that's £2,208 per year for a band D house. Petrol is 85% tax, VAT is 20%....the list is long and often it seems we are being taxed 2/3/4 times on the same things.
I long for a simplification of tax, they should stop putting tax on everything and just increae income tax. Some things still need taxing, for example, I'd remove VED but put a higher purchase tax on more polluting vehicles and increase tax on petrol, those who pollute the most pay more. Take VAT off clothes and put more on beer and fags.

We should be trying to ensure people have all they really need first. Jeez I sound like a Communist again.

If Drakeford puts up income tax then people will relocate to just across the border and commute to Wales for work. The M4 will be even more congested. Firms will also shift their business to the lower tax regime. Drakeford has just not thought it through.

That seems fairly obvious. It's always about funding which is why I now support more devolved powers. The Senedd needs to be able to borrow or everything they try to do will just be robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Social care needs reform. There's lots in Wales that needs reform but the Senedd haven't the financial power to do it succesfully. If we're not going to abolish them and we are nowhere near an indy vote let alone choosing indy then Wales must have more devolved powers.

We already decided that as soon as the mortgage is paid off we are signing the house over to our son. The rules may change but we will do as much as we can to preserve his inheritance. Unless things improve a lot he's going to need all the help he can get. Mind you, I think I'd rather have an accident than end up in a care home.

Re the bit about transferring your home to your son, it’s definitely worth exploring, but it’s worth getting some advice. I know someone who did that for the reasons outlined, when the parents got a bit older and wanted to move to something more suitable the children picked up a CGT liability.

Thanks for that, good advice. I probably would have anyway, it'll depend on what the rules are and what will cost him the least money I guess.

The CGT liability is likely to be significantly lower than any care costs. Still worth doing.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

My parents have just done that with me and my sister. Get some advice though. What I will say is my parents solicitor told them that local authorities now have teams / departments to investigate the transfer should the need arise. Get advice from a specialist solicitor who practices in this area of law. Don’t just use a jack of all trades solicitor.
