I think he’s going to be pick Roberts there aswell, it’s not a controversial selection as he’s done it this season more than once already, my problem is that it hasn’t worked previously. Cullen really struggled up in Barnsley with the physicality of their centre halves and was caught offside too many times, he was then justifiably dropped for second leg which he could have no complaints over. I personally don’t think copper will trust him for Saturday.

Have you read that article? ‘Would Cooper be tempted? I think not, but stranger things have happened’. His conclusion is that Cooper is unlikely to start Roberts in a front three. I’m sure Thomas Frank will have considered it though, it’s not as if we haven’t already tried it.

That is my stance also, although it's odds against its not massive odds against, it's a live possibly that not many are talking about.

No, it’s not massive odds against. We haven’t got many options and it’s something we already tried (although from memory I think that was when Ayew was injured?). As far as I see it, he either trusts Cullen or he goes back to 532.Roberts or Whittaker in a front three would probably be the next option. Losing Routledge is a big blow.

| Connor Roberts on 22:18 - May 27 with 853 views | AndyCole | Nobody talks of 532. It's so wrong on so many levels, most especially right here, right now. With a WB formation most teams always look to set-out as a 352, go-forward unit. Setting-up 532 is such the loser mentality. How apt. To succumb to the yesteryear parlance of the Ron managers on here: 4141 is the most likely option to thwart Franks. He is petrified of our talent to hurt him out wide, in the same way we out-foxed him away. Roberts was a key facet of our attacking threat. And with Lowe wide left, Fulton leading 2nd phase with his special chemistry into Ayew we could easily replicate our away dominance. With Hourihane now also in the mix, Frank will be chewing his toenails. The concern with this set-up is of course restricting Grimes too deep. We are best when Grimes is on the front foot, in the red zone, scoring, pressing. Our ability to unleash Grimes is the key to getting into and succeeding in the EPL. It has been for quite some time and Hourihane has been the one to unlock that latent potency. Symbiosis. | |

Your first paragraph is unsurprisingly laughable. You were arguing that 532 and 352 are passé, now you’re arguing psychological nuances between them. Special chemistry you’ve picked a holding midfielder and our talisman who always shows for the ball and decided they have ‘special chemistry’. To attack them out wide, we go 532, 352 if you like, it’s nominal. Both just mean playing with three centre backs and wingbacks. Roberts will always be a key facet of our attacking threat if we setup like that, the role is perfect for him. I never thought I’d need to explain that to anyone. You’re right, we did destroy them away, with three centre backs and two wingbacks. Grimes didn’t even start. They battered us at home when we played the same formation. I think Cooper showed them too much respect that night, we were too defensive. I’m sure he’ll have learned from it. I think he’ll go with a front three anyway.

We missed Ayew on the right. Not a knock at Connor, I agree, he was as good as anyone, but we couldn’t really get our talisman into the game. That cross from Roberts at the start of the second half was our chance. 9 times out of 10 Ayew scores that.
