| Hillsborough Trial collapses on 14:43 - May 26 by pencoedjack | Anyone who was around football in the 80's & 90's will be aware of the behaviour of football fans (& the police) in those days. It is awful people died but it was a disaster waiting to happen. If I was a Liverpool fan who travelled to that game without a ticket Id be living with a pretty guilty conscience as I would be if I was a cooper who changed my statement to ensure the blame was passed to others. Time to close the whole sorry episode down. |
Dont blame the fans. Thats too simplistic even for you.

| Hillsborough Trial collapses on 21:38 - May 26 by Catullus | Fans behaved as fans did back in the day. I won't argue that deaths were caused by selfish fans determined to get in th ground by any means but even so, what happened was a direct result of poor policing. One look at the terrace would have been enough, it was rammed and there were many more outisde trying to get in than were already there. Opening the gates and basically encouraing a free for all was catastrophic. Trying to lay all the blame on the fans was cowardly. It was self preservation. None of the fans outside knew what was happening inside but the police could see it. The ordinary constables followed orders, their bosses made the bad calls. |
Great post on poor policing, the rest not so much. [Post edited 27 May 2021 6:50]

Check out the wiki page on the Hillsborough disaster under the title 'Media portrayal', it wasn't just The Sun newspaper, the others were at it as well, no doubt The Sun was the worst, the headlines across lots of the papers were disgraceful.

To try and lay the blame for the Hillsborough disaster on one group of people does no one any good. Football hooliganism was rife in the UK 70s and 80s. Football stadium were covered in steel fences to keep fans apart. Did no one do a risk assessment. Football stadiums were antiquated death traps The FAs just buried there heads in the sand and ignored the problems. The police were badly trained there maim job seemed to be keeping fans apart. No safety stewards and grounds in the 80s Local government very relaxed about issuing safety certificates for grounds Fans arriving late and trying to force their way into the ground. All these and many other faults were highlighted in the excellent Taylor report. His report resulted in modern safer stadiums which these days are family friendly. Unfortunately society only learns from disasters then take actions to make everyone safer . [Post edited 27 May 2021 9:14]

Imagine ours and Cardiff at Hillsborough at that time. Our derby games were such fans couldn’t be trusted even to travel to games in peace. We saw paving slabs dropped from motorway bridges ffs. We are in no position to take any higher ground

And let's not get into scouse bashing again . All of the big clubs fans turned up without ticket. This Saturday, many of OUR fans apparently are travelling to Hounslow without tickets. The game is live on TV. Why? Our fan base i of a fraction of Liverpool so let's have a little context here.

So was every team at the time, but if they were renowned as you say the police should been better prepared..police fault all day long, you could see thousands and thousands making their way to leppings lane ,,more than the end could hold..didn't take much common sense to see this, should have acted early and delayed kick off and got police there to police it early and start turning back fans without tickets..to open the gates was complete negligence seeing the numbers outside,it was too late by then as people were getting crushed outside..should acted early..and not too let fans onto pitch and open gates when it was clear people were getting crushed is a complete failure and senior officers should have been jailed

Those travelling and you are right there are many will be going for a variety of reasons, weekend break, incorporate some atmosphere with other swans fans and watch the game in a bar. Others for the day trip, many haven’t been anywhere for months. And of course large groups of lads going for no specific reason other than a big old drink. I’m sure there are other groups going for a variety of reasons too. People feel they have been under state control for too long, rightly or wrongly they will take any advantage to change their surroundings.

We don’t feel that way Keith neither do any of our neighbours. We just stick to rules, invoke self discipline and be sensible. And that s where we go wrong . Just as well ,we were not facing an invasion such as we were in WW 2. Our snowflakes would have melted.

I was there with two mates, we went up on a bus with our dads (well mine and Alan's dads and a boy from Australia whose dad was workingover her, Alan died 5 years later, the Ozzy boy went back home) there was lots of pushing and shoving, I missed most of the game because I couldn't see much and when we came out there was fighting in Stanley park. We got back to our bus to find several had been bricked and some Liverpool fans were getting a shoeing by a lot of angry Jacks. Terracing was like that back then, ram as many in as you can. I'm all for bringing terracing back but safe standng areas only.

We got inside twice, both times in to the KO when the swans scored, que lots of celebrating and then the friendly Liverpool fans attacked us. At the time it was right up our street. Coppers were dreadful that day mind, outside it was nuts, wall collapsed on one of our older blokes from Neyland, he ended up in hospital and died a few months later. Not sure if it was linked. I think another fan died that day too. But it’s a long time ago. Stanley Park was hilarious for us at the time. I’m not sure Liverpool fans had seen retaliation like that before. Same down the road in that long queue of buses. I think generally most swans fans were there for a day out, but you can only take so much, very similar to the fa cup 5th round at Upton Park in 79. Dodgy days back then.

Were the authorities goung to shut down The Vetch completely or limiti it to 3000 and all other grounds like it? Clubs would have gone bust. It was an issue for Society at large. The police were put in an impossible position. A stronger Police leader coulld have refused to sent his staff to antiquated stadiums and demenaded their closure. It would have been the right thing to do. The blame has to be shared Police, Liverpool fans, planning authorities Counils etc. They were all at fault.

I actually agree with that. Fans were wild animals on many occasions in those days and were treated by Police as scum, not surprising when you recall the carnage and fear they caused as they trashed whole town centres. We have short selective memories and young ones -under 40 !-need to understand that. Our own fans were no angels and our derby matches were games where fans could not even be expected to go to the ground without trashing places. Bubble burst at Hillsborough .Fact. Police,IMO ,at ground level did their best ,when they realised what was going on. Their senior officer commanders stand indicted as lying ,devious trash. I knew one of them quite well. The troops ,as usual were sh@t upon from a great height and Ive no doubt about the statements and their veracity. '@rses burst at silver and gold command as the horrendous carnage unfolded. Some brave but futile efforts from rank and file lads, one of whom was a constable of mine who is seen on the pitch giving CPR. The lad died. My colleague left 3 months later to run a pub. He was appalled . When people refer to "police" they have to differentiate between working officers and careerists who might a well be managers of a Civil Service department.
