Martinez never knew of Rangel before he signed, Reeves and Martinez went out to Spain to watch a centre forward and were so impressed with the opposition right back that they took a gamble..... The Angel Rangel story began!

Aye... So Martinez knew of him before hand then? He physically watched him play out in Spain in a season where he was an ever present for his side. He signed him as a result.

They went looking at a complete different player but ended up being fixated on Rangel.

The signing of Piroe does seem a risk to me, especially if he’s being tasked in replacing Ayew, as you’ve said previously, it’s a position that if you want success, it very rarely comes cheap.

Stats let you pick which out of thousands of players your manager sits down on a Tuesday night to watch (footage of on a laptop at home). Stats help weed to out players who look better than they are, and find players more effective than they look.

The days when managers were expected to be expert scouts as well as tacticians and coaches (and negotiators, man-managers, rousing speech-givers...) may well have been less boring but only because so many were awful at at least one of their responsibilities. With managers only lasting up to two years in most jobs it's insane for a club to hand full power over transfers to a manager. We got burned doing that with Potter (not that his transfers were much good, see earlier "looked better than they were"). Took his boy with him and there was no one left with a spreadsheet of potential senior targets.

No he didn't. He signed him after being so impressed by him when he was scouting another player.......that was the first day he ever knew of Rangel.

Not trying to gain scores here Doc but that is the true story.

Yes, so he knew him before he signed him. Not sure what you are disputing?

This was not an agent recommendation, Martinez saw him play in Spain and wanted him as a result.

He signed a deal on that day that Martinez seen him play, he left leaving without a fee agreed as Martinez thought it would be minimal(Reeves and Martinez had to get a flight back, Reeves wife worked for the flight company so had cheap flights). As we all know it ended up with Rangel paying a majority of the fee out of his own pocket as the club were only willing to pay so much.

So no he didn't know of him as he was signed on the day that Martinez first seen him play. I am just trying to explain the Rangel situation but as per usual it's something I shouldn't have started with you as you are unable/unwilling to see it.

I will just leave you come back with something that will make you feel good but any fan who knows the story will know the facts of it all.

The Rangel situation is well known, you are only confirming what I said.

I made the factual point that Martinez knew Rangel before signing him, that's just documented fact. He signed him as a result of seeing him play and being confident he would fit in the team.

What you are arguing about only you know.

Do I think Cooper has watched Prioe? Doubtful... hence the point. It screams of an agent recommendation.

Martinez saw him and signed him but he wasn't there to scout him and from memory it was announced as a bit of luck, we liked what we saw and made him an offer. We were there to scout a striker so no, from memory, Rangel was not known to anybody at the club. Maybe others can confirm or deny that.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Doesn't matter what his intentions of being there were. We signed him because Martinez physically saw him and liked him. He knew him before signing, if he didn't then he would still have been an unknown.

We were there to scout Molina. but again, that part is irrelevant.

So what you are saying is that he knew him because he watched him in that match?

That's a massive reach. Until that game kicked off nobody at Swansea had Rangel on their radar. That is what's being said. You can twist and squirm all you like and it won't change things.

Of course, it’s the exact reason he bought him. How else is he going to know him, you aren’t suggesting I thought they were old school chums are you? Rangel is a footballer, the way a manager knows what he is signing with that player is by watching them play.

If, when he landed in the U.K. you saw Roberto and said “Guys I know a player in Spain who would be perfect for you. I doubt you know him though, his name is Angel Rangel”... they would respond stating they do indeed know the player and are actually signing him.

I really don’t understand the confusion here. Martinez CHOSE to sign him AFTER watching him personally. He knew what he was getting.

Does our manager know what he’s getting with Piroe? I highly doubt it; I would imagine he hopes he is good like the rest of us. With Rangel that was not the case, the manager signed him directly after watching him and personally wanting him as a result.

It really is as simple as that.

You can dance around that simple fact for whatever reason you are doing so, but Rangel was signed by the manager Martinez because Martinez personally liked him. You cannot like a player you don’t know.

The Piroe signing is a classic of it type. A transfer that has been mooted for literally weeks with all the indications indirectly that it is happening.

It could even end with Scott saying "we were never interested in this player" as he signs a three year deal with Gronnigen.

I suspect we will see one of those interviews. "Why did you chose Swansea?".

Then I echo the reply. All very simple.

But glad we now understand that Rangel was signed directly by our manager who knew what he was getting. If only you weren’t so excitable to disagree with a pretty obvious and factual statement, you may have saved us both a bit of time.

How do you know someone at the club hasn;t watched Piroe dozens of times, in person and on a laptop?
No one knew of Rangel until that game kicked off, Martine wasn't there to watch him but was impressed by him.
Jeez I thought I could argue black was white but you take it to a whole new level. Seeinga player for one game isn't knowing them.

I don’t, hence why I said “I doubt” Cooper has gone to watch Piroe. Where as Rangel was signed directly by the manager AFTER watching him play.

Of course seeing a player and then wanting to sign them is “knowing them” in football terms. That’s exactly what happened with Ronaldo and Man Utd, they played against Lisbon and signed him off the back of it. They knew what they were getting. Same with Rangel.

Zero clue what you are arguing. Do you reckon they had to share brunch and play a game of chess before they knew what they were getting with Rangel? You are being silly.

Some comments from that one off friendly:-

Former United captain Roy Keane said: “I saw how good Ronaldo was that day. He was up against John O’Shea. Sheasy ended up seeing the doctor at half-time because he was actually having dizzy spells.”

“Sporting won the game 3-1 but, more importantly, Ronaldo had passed his audition with flying colours. If people didn’t know about him beforehand, they certainly did after the full-time whistle.”

Amazing that you genuinely think by that logic they didn’t know Ronaldo when they signed him......Despite watching him play.

Same with Rangel and a whole host of other players that clubs watch and then decide to sign off the back of it.

Sorry, not budging on this one.

Oh no pal, It's you that's being silly. As ever, getting into a post with you is like getting caught in quicksand. You'll keep arguing the point, no matter how daft, until the other person gives up and then you'll make out you were right, you have to have the last word. Well fine, you can have the last word on this, go on. I won't answer again because no matter what you say you are wrong about this.
