| Same old England on 10:42 - Jul 8 with 580 views | ItchySphincter | Sterling’s dive for the own goal was the best part of the match, a thing of beauty. He knew he wasn’t going to get to it before the defender so he hedged his bets on the pen instead and flung his arms up and went all theatrical. Lucky for him the defender shat the bed. Stirling is a cracking littler footballer but to anyone outside of England he’s an embarrassment to the beautiful game. | |

Yes but we would be embarrassed. Wonder what the English press would have to say if we had got through like that? Bitter? I'd say so.

Of course we're bitter. Our rivals have just got to the final courtesy of a dodgy penalty decision alongside all the other advantages they had over Denmark that Wales wouldn't have had, had we have been playing the Danes. So silly comparison, with an extreme lack of awareness to boot.

Yes it does. Wales shouldn’t be winning major tournaments, getting out of the group is an achievement. There’s always supporting England for people who can’t stomach that.

At the same time, there would have been absolute riots if that had been given to Denmark. It is what it is. They were the better team.

"It looked a pen to me live, didn't on replays" So it wasn't a pen? There was no contact and the replays showed it was a clear dive, it can't get more clear and obvious? Yeah I'm saying he bottled it completely.

Well yes, in the replay it clearly showed no contact from the first player and that Sterling started going down before the second player made contact, that should have been enough to say it's a clear error, that Sterling dived. Isn't that the point of VAR, to show u cheating AND reffing mistakes. The ref was conned but VAR shouldn't have been. Clearer penalties and obvious fouls have been let go this tournament, Like the foul on Kieffer Moore that led directly to a Danish goal. I still say there's no point in being bitter about it though. I'm not supporting England but also, I don't want them to lose just because they're England. My money is on Italy.

Come on, it can get a lot more clear and obvious than that. It wasn’t a pen. 0% chance VAR overturn it if the ref books Sterling. The ambiguity comes when we’re assessing whether the ref made a clear and obvious error from his own viewpoint, not whether it’s clear and obvious on a replay. I don’t agree with the rule, but that’s how I understand it. VAR didn’t even ask the ref to look for himself. I’m pretty sure if they did, he wouldn’t have given it. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

How can a player falling over without contact not be a clear and obvious error? He was conned by a dive of a player who tried to make it look like contact had been made. Arsene Wenger on Bein Sports is saying he has no idea why the ref wasn't asked to check. It was a complete cop out by the VAR official who didn't do his job of correcting bad decisions.

The irony of this is of course that within a few months Sterling will be diving and conning referees into giving penalties that will see the majority of those there last night becoming mightily pyssed off. Remember what I say about hypocrisy. It applies to all

But that's all related to offsides? No lines, armpits etc, which is right. But it's either a foul or it's not, and that wasn't. [Post edited 8 Jul 2021 12:02]

Yes, but what it’s saying is that if it takes multiple camera angles to determine the original offside decision was wrong, it doesn’t get overturned. Same applies to fouls, which are more subjective than offsides. I think it’s to prevent really long breaks while they watch from every available angle. I wanted them to lose, with the benefit of multiple replays I don’t think it’s a foul either. If the VAR operator is asked ‘was there contact? Take as long and as many replays as you need’ he doesn’t give the foul. If he’s asked ‘has the referee got this obviously wrong?’ He probably hasn’t.

The point of VAR is to get the result certain high powered people want, why do you think man utd have been given over 60 penalties, most of them "soft" in the last 3 seasons? And yes it worked a treat last night for England, i am glad they won but no way should it have been given or not overturned.

I honestly do not know where you are going with this. It took one replay and it was clear there was no contact. Of course the referee was obviously wrong. The article you quoted was about offsides where in the premier league they are looking at the nearest millimetre, putting lines up on sleeves of shirts, it's a shambles. Fouls are black and white. There was no contact.

Hang on, there was no foul so the referee has obviously gotten it wrong. He was conned which is a clear and obvious error. The real cock up here is the VAR person, who was it, where are they from? I'm sure in Denmark the media are all over this penalty decision.

Fouls aren’t as black and white as offsides. They are subjective, you can’t draw a line which gives you a 100% accurate decision. Watch it back and listen to Peter Waltons comments (I admit he may be bias). He effectively says he didn’t think it was a penalty, but there was enough reasonable doubt not to overturn it. Minute later VAR ratifies the decision.

I listened to Peter Walton at the time, and like I have done in every other time he's been on the air, I've come to the conclusion the guys an absolute joke. Even Lee Dixon said he has no time for what Peter Walton says. The article you quoted was about offsides and how long it takes to come to the decision. I can imagine Leeds will disagree with you regarding black and white fro, the Bamford offside during the season, due to a mm of his armpit being in front of a line which looked as if it had been drawn on by a toddler. Those decisions take minutes to come up with, they are what you would call nowhere near an obvious error by the linesman for not flagging. A foul called by the offical, where there has been no contact made in the slightest, due to a dive by the attacking place, is everything you'd want VAR to be eradicating. Obvious errors.
