go back on their promises, Charlatan's the lot of them, up to the Taxpayers to pay for the Torys mates making fortunes over covid, even though they ballsed the job up over PPE and Track and Trace.

your point regarding taking care of ones own is fine in principle but after having to watch my late mum in law struggle with basic functions after her husband passed away and being deemed unbale to look after herself, it was with deep regret that she ended up in a care home. For her to live with us would have meant either we installed a bathroom down stairs (not feasible in any way) or she stayed living upstairs ( she had extremely limited movement due to a knee op which went wrong and a recent hip op ) My wife made the decision and its one she regrets ever since .

Boundy, I know that for some it is absolutely the best choice and still it will be upsetting.

My own mum was ill and had begged me to have her move in with us but we then lived in a 2 bedroom new build terraced and literally had no room for her, she couldn't have managed the stairs either. My brother in law (who did have the room) told my sister no so my mum discharged herself and went home. I argued with her about it, told her she needed to be in hospital and 3 days later she was dead. We have more room now, 5 years too late but that's life. We all have regrets.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Drakeford is using a PFI scheme to pay for the new Velindre hospital and used it for the heads of the valleys road improvement scheme. It's costing Wales hundreds of millions, it's doubled the price of the work.

There had to be a tax rise.

However, national insurance is a regressive taxation (not by definition, it is due to the structure of it). It unfairly hits those lower down the income ladder. In addition, it is not charged on, for example, rental income (big Tory support) and interest. So those who generate their income from large savings and property will not get hit. In addition, it means that the the care costs of the rich are, in effect, being paid for by lower earners rather than by the rich and their children or other beneficiaries of their estate when they die.

I’m not being funny, but anyone earning less than £50k ish per year who defends this is genuinely unaware of the reality. It is almost directly the reverse of taxing the rich to pay for the poor.

Diane Abbott would, of course, never have been in charge of any taxation rises as she was shadow Home Secretary rather than shadow chancellor.

There did not have to be a tax rise.

This is what Johnson is spending the new money on ….. the privatisation of our NHS.
‘Johnson announces 42 new NHS executives on £200,000 a year. Cost £8.4 million’.
I bet the Tory donors are getting ready for this next raid on the public purse.

I didn't mean to infer that you were judging others ,apologies if you thought I did. Everyone's circumstances are personal to them , there a some who treat their elderly with such disdain its hard to believe they're of the same blood and for those their day of reckoning will come ( I'm a great believer in karma) . We do all have regrets ,its how we manage them is the difficult bit .

Labour tend to support funding public services with progressive taxation that doesn’t exempt the richest in society.

As has already been explained.

Have an up arrow.

IMHO it would have been fairer to put the increase on income tax, more people would have paid and the burden per person could have been reduced. There are other options too, like taxing companies who funnel their cash in to tax havens, but that’s political dynamite for Boris.

They could even have removed or significantly increased the UEL for NI - that would have been far fairer. Or changed the % from 2% to 4% over the UEL or similar.

Income tax would have had to raise by much more as businesses don't pay income tax but do pay NI.

I'd have preferred a blended approach including the reduction of higher rate tax relief on pensions and some grading of the NI increase away from the lower paid.

Fair point about the Employers NI contributions, but they could have blended that in along with a small tax rise for the general population, he could also have targeted the offshore lot.
The people who can afford should pay a little more and the burden taken away from the people who are lower paid.

I try to avoid this subject but look at it this way.
Every week ,we watch premier league footballers earning more in a DAY what most earn in a year.
Chuck in Mo Salah (good to charity) wanting to more than double his wages to 500,000 per WEEK for the privililege of watching him on a football field and you will see we are all damned as hypocrites.

It is obscene and if we are talking about those who are able to pay more and avoid pain then I'm afraid we all need to look at the mirror of our conscience.

I'll end by this;if ALL premier league players agree a levy of 30% on their wages ,most financial problems could be alliviated.

Dont forget Roy Keane being outraged at players being asked to pay extra.

It is the very fact their wages are so grotesque that they should pay as I suggest.

I do not consider those earning the likes of 150/250k per annum to be "the rich". We can or could aim for greater equality by aiming at those truly taking unrealistic wedges.

Anyway,it wont happen.Tories wont do it,neither will Labour.

The average Premier League salary is £60,000 a week, so 30% of that we'll call £1,040,000 p/a. Premier League clubs can register squads of 25, so that's 500 players likely to be earning a decent salary other than youth players, those out on loan etc.

The ballpark amount a 30% levy would raise? (on top of the significant taxation they'd already be paying of course) Approximately £520m. For comparison, the budget for the Dept of Health and Social Care in England for 20/21 was £212bn.

So no, "most financial problems" could not be alleviated with such a levy. It'd barely pay for half a submarine.

Thanks for the reply.
60 average then.

Do you believe it is beyond the wit of man to have the many earning in excess of 100/200/300k pay as I suggest.

Can Salah be justified about "demanding" an increase from 200 to 500k per week.

He is not alone.

Those "earning in excess of 100/200/300k pay" will already be liable for 45% of anything over £150k per year in tax. That's also including endorsements and sponsorship income. Daresay some Premier League players would feature quite highly in lists of top UK tax payers.

For some reason there's a moral outrage when it comes to footballers though. I guess some people are naturally just a bit envious of working class boys who do well for themselves.

Professional footballers are entertainers - most anyway. They put bums on seats, and in a free market society like we have they get paid because they do that. If we don't like how much they get, then we should stop going to matches, watching them on TV or buying merchandise. We won't though.

205 billion over 40 years = 5 billion a year of which wales share is 200 million a year.

Funny how in 2018 labour under corbyn were calling for 1p increase in NI to fund the NHS and social care. 3 years later labour under Starmer voted against giving the NHS extra funding. What has happened to Labour have they gone off the NHS?

If you want to fund the NHS people have to pay more tax.

Wasting money on brexit, £600m per week

Wasting money on PPE

The thing is, for all the whining Kilks does about Trident, that £4bn a year is money that will be spent in working class communities like Barrow and on the Clyde. I'm sure he'll be happy to explain to them why they're all going to be out of work if he gets his way.

If you wanna talk about a waste of money we really should be discussing HS2, or rail electrification on the South Wales line. Billions spent on HS2 to knock just half an hour off a journey time that far fewer people are ever going to make now. Hundreds of millions spent electrifying the line west of Bristol to save five or ten minutes. Pointless, ludicrous expense.

Pro footballers should be subject to market forces then and as such get paid what the club can afford. Any club that gets into large debt should be forced to sell players to get the debt down.
Barcelona and Real Madrid would be screwed and they'd be the tip of the iceberg.

If we're using free market as an excuse for obcene wages we should also use it as a reason players cannot get massive pay rises, any club that spends more on wages than it has coming in should be forced to sell players.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?
