Loses in the first round of Indian Wells (well technically 2nd round, received a bye in the first) in straight sets to world number 100 Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-2, 6-4.

Stick with me folks.

She’ll be fine, decent career and may win a few smaller titles, but won’t be winning another Grand Slam and talk of her dominating the game was ludicrous.

I hope she has a successful career and does Britain proud.
The media are not doing her any favours at the moment and neither are all those celebs, including Duchess Kate, who have been crawling out of the woodwork.
Hopefully she has sensible, level headed people behind her, keeping her feet on the ground.
Remember Justin Rose, who after his success as an Amateur in the Open Golf, took a couple of years as a professional to gain some success. Look how things turned out for him.
We need to be patient.

I am indeed and as it is my profession, I would say I am qualified to make that assessment. You will just have to trust me.

Serena wont win another either.

The girl is 18, she has done the hard bit with a Grand Slam in the bag, meeting all of the post slam requirements ansd losing her coach Andrew Richardson before going into Indian Wells was always going to be tricky. As you are a professional you must realise what she achieved after the Wimbledon crash is nothing short of remarkable both mentally and physically.

She can take time now to get a good team together and put some training blocks in place. As for Serena you are a brave man backing against her i have watched her for many a year and if she can get injury free anything can happen especially in Australia.

Of course what she achieved was remarkable, but the run was incredibly favourable. She didn’t face a top 10 player.

People were jumping the gun because they only watch the Grand Slams and saw her put a semi decent run together at Wimbledon (it was just ok in reality) and then the US Open miracle run.

Others that watch the game all year round were familiar with her for a long time. She loses early rounds of ITF tournaments. She’s a decent player and will be even better, but there is absolutely no way she get the benefit of such a Grand Slam run again, it just won’t happen.

Serena also will never win another one, her mentality is shot which was a large part of what made her great. She immediately goes into sulk mode and starts looking for problems. Players aren’t fearful of her anymore and they are coming through matching her for power, she is losing her natural advantage over her opposition, in fact I’d go as far to say she has lost her advantage.

I’ll be shocked if she is still trying after next year, that gives her 3 shots at it (she can’t win the French). Doesn’t see how she navigates a tournament unscathed to win another. Not happening for my money.

I see the not very attractive trait of some British folk to build someone up , then take great delight when they "fail" is alive and well

I have always remained realistic when it came to her abilities. Hence the thread.

Why it seems to have upset some I have no idea.

She came through quali's, Ive watched her for a long time same as Heather Watson and Lara Robson in the ladies. I know being a top junior means sod all but if you can transition and stay injury free you are in with a chance. Nigel Sears was obviously not the right fit so she went back to AR who cant coach her as he has other commitments as you should know. She is 18 and losing in first rounds of ITF is no bad thing as long as you learn, every player sulks i agree and that is the key but she has already shown she can get mentally tough so i have great hopes for this kid who looks as if she has got the tools required.

By the way her father will ensure she gets the right coaching. I wish her all the best and hope she emulates Andy Murray and makes a mark on Tennis that wont be forgotten.

Cant see Serena going back onto clay i agree, but i would not count out a full tilt at the Aussie open where she could serve her way to the final and who knows?

The qualifiers are a poor standard, anyone who has top 25 ability (which Emma probably just about has) then they aren’t too much of a challenge, the challenge is more mental than anything going up against players scrapping for their livelihoods.

Not sure you could describe Raducanu as a “top junior” really, don’t think she ranked top 20 juniors, maybe just inside if so…. just. So many players have far more current ability and much more potential than Raducanu.

I’ve said it before but Gauff is an example of a true prodigy and a year younger than Emma. She has the potential for maybe 10+ slams in her career, wouldn’t surprise me at all.

Ranked number 1 junior, top 20 in the seniors and regularly going fairly deep in Slams now. Gauff is one of many already well ahead of Raducanu who are of a similar age. Anisimova, Andreescu, Swiatek and Tauson are 4 that would be real favourites against her if they played right now, all within around 2 years of her in age bracket.

But she was the beneficiary of a run that will probably define her career. It’s great for her, but to pretend she is the next tennis superstar about to dominate the game is extremely wide of the mark.

Of course she will be fine, nobody is saying otherwise.

What was said is that she is vastly overrated due to a freak 2 week run where Covid withdrawals transpired to give a young up and coming player the pathway of a lifetime towards a Grand Slam win that probably won't be seen again in our lifetime.

She will be completely fine, will never be one of the elite women's players of course, but she will have a fine career in the top 25 and will be able to retire comfortably in her 30's.

But she will almost certainly never win another Slam and probably won't even get to a final again in her career. That is not an insult, or a criticism - its just realistic.
